Yeah, I was in pit, or as we call it front ensemble last year, and yeah marching band music is A LOT harder. You sound like my friend Brian who's new to it too. Playing Marching band is A LOT different from rudimental but once you get it down you're good to go! I wish you luck, from a fellow drummer. If I can do it so can you. Just don't give up smile

I play tenner drum, bass four, marimba, and drum set marching band, stage band, and drum line. i started playing drums just recently this year (i came from playing bass guitar, flute, and tuba). My instructor orrigionaly had me on drum set and then foind out i was pretty good at the marimba. and since then he has been throwing me new instruments to play (set, tenner, and bass have all been taught to me by my brother who had been playing drums while i was in chior). Marching came naturally to me because the first thing i learned was how to march. i dont really consider myself as a band fanatic, but just a big music lover

theres been a bunch of parade playing options to do, but ive never done it, so i wouldnt know how marching band is, but i first did violin, hated it, trombone, got kicked out for not practicing, and then i tried percussion and stuck to it. it helps that i tap on everything wink

Rhap-chan Fruit Jammers I love playing the marimba with 4 mallets! It's so much fun to have three octaves all to yourself. I actually had to play vibes in my school's jazz band because no one else could play with more than 2 mallets. We have a great batterie, because nobody ever wants to do pit for more than one year. We actually did really well at PASIC the last two years, so I can't complain. I love 4-mallets too, though I've only been playing with 4 for a year or so and I'm not very good yet. But all three octaves to yourself.... That is Heaven, isn't it? ^_^ I did vibes in jazz too, but I'm quitting. All I ever got to play was sax music I had to transpose, and my director couldn't even bother to give me all my music last year.... >.> I play bass 2 son! DRUMLINE!!

Front Ensemble a.k.a. Pit rocks my socks! I'm the section leader playing the marimba in the small local high school marching band. I love to play with four mallets even if it's rediculously painful. Having three to four octaves to myself is great. I have to say though that this is only my secong year as a percussionist because I normally play oboe. Apparently my band director and percussion instructor think that I have lots of potential, so they decided that I get the hardest music in the whole section sweatdrop . I just happen to be the smallest person in all of percussion at 5'2" and am playing and have to push around the largest and heaviest instrument... kind of ironic, don't you think? Nevertheless, I enjoy it. All key board instruments in my section this year play with four mallets for most of the music but there is alot of talent this year, so I have faith in them. We just finished two weeks of band camp and had our first performance on the 31st and we didn't even get the last part of our first movement until that morning and we were able to play it by memory and play it well, so I'm seriously looking forward to competitions and COC this year.
Pit: marimba, xylorimba, xylophone, 2 vibes, glock, bass, chimes, 6 sus. cymbals, crash cymals, gong, still more to be added (only 7 people in section to play all of these)
Drumline: 2 snares, 1 quad (tenor), 4 bass drums

Rhap-chan Marching band music is evil and wrong (^^ kidding, but it's definitely hard). And there aren't many rudimental drummers out there because.... many "drummers" can't play rudiments! excuse me miss chan!?! lets not be discriminating against drummers with reading incapabilities scream im section leader of the batterie at my highschool (going into my sophomore year btw) and i make sure that everybody in the line knows the rudiments, from single stroke roll all the way to pataflafla's and what not. none the less, to know the rudiments and apply them to ANY type of music is quintessential, whether it be marching band, rock, symphony, rap, waltz, blues, what have you. they are extremely important. not only do i use them in the batterie, but even in jazz band, and when im screwin around on my set back home or with my own band. so study your rudiments bro! xp

We have an annoying excersize with 6 mallets. It hurts soooo bad! but it's so fun that you just want to play it more. haha then again I'm originally a flute player This is my first year on vibes but I did a winter percussion season on marimba in eighth grade and a street marching season on marching xylophone my eighth grade year. Oh, I'm going to be a freshman by the way. I get to start my schools entire show so I'm scared about that. If you live in California and are at a competition you should come watch us. We're from Los Banos, and yes we know what los banos means.
