I'm not sure how much you guys can help me between today and tomorrow, but I'm gonna try. Now we're seriously looking at a Yamaha 62II alto. It's the same one my section leader has, and I love it. Any other thoughts?

Well the 62 series is a great flexible horn good for whatever style you play. It's a pro horn so it's quite pricy but well worht it if you like the way it plays and sounds. I liked the 62 series but didnt care much for it with my current mouthpieces. There are some folks in my section that are music majors and play on 62's they're pretty happy with what they have. I presonaly went for the custom series but i choose it purely for it's jazz capability. Go for it if you played it and like the way it sounds and feels. It's a pretty standard horn as far as pro horns go.

Good to know. I played it a bit at the store yesterday night and fell in love. So it's great that it has a good reputation.

Sadly, one of our cars broke down this morning and we may need some money to fix it or get a new one. So the sax got put on hold. Damn bad luck. gonk

So do your bands have big sax sections? We have two altos in each band...I like it because it's very personal, but it sure would be nice to have a lot of gifted players. whee

5tenors
1bari
and about 6 altos

My last band had thirteen altos, six tenors, and three baritone saxophone players. Most of them sucked, and only a few, including me, were able to make it into Varsity band.

I'm in a college marchingband so our sax section is about 30-40 members in my jazzband we have the standard bigband section tweo altos two tenors and one bari. We have subs to sit in at gigs but they dont count.

Ooooh! Are you guys sharing how many saxophones your school has??
Well, my school (not my school in 6 days though... =() has a jazz band with 6 altos, 4 tenors and 1 bari; a jazz ensemble with like 7 altos, 4 tenors and 2 baris (I was one of them wink ); then the three bands probably have like 20 each, 5+ tenors and 2 baris each wink ... Next year in marching band, the alto section is around 30 from an eye view, like 10 tenors and 2 or 3 baris wink

... I want to play soprano SO bad!!! I'm gonna track it down next year.. cause it is probably lighter to play, shaped like a clarinet that I played before, and is... different, lol smile

... ughh.. I need to go search eBay soon for a mouthpiece covering and probably A LOT of accesories rolleyes cause of Marching Bandd...

The wind ensemble I'm in has five saxes for concert season, and seven for pep. During concert season there's two altos, two tenors, and a bari, and for pep season we get another two altos 'cause there's a clarinet and an oboe who double. I'm the only girl for concert season - sectionals are a blast. XD I love the sax guys. Though nothing ever gets done 'cause we all just sit around and talk, but we can get away with it 'cause we're cool like that. The other class, the concert band, has... three saxes, I believe. Two altos and a tenor. We've got a small band. Our jazz band had eight saxes, though. Four altos, three tenors, and a bari. We had all the wind ensemble altos (including the two that double), both me and the other tenor player PLUS a girl who doubled on flute for tenors, and then our bari.

ugh our saxophone section is pitiful. I was section leader last two years (graduated now) and the section went from 7 altos, 4 tenors, 2 bari; to 4 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bari; to 3 altos, 2 tenors, no bari, to 4 altos, 2 tenors, no bari.

These numbers were split across 3 bands in the concert season! The last two years were all freshman, myself, and a friend in my grade....it was soooo terrible.

Oh my goodness, my letter just came in the mail this morning saying I made the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony II!! I'm so exicted...playing alto, of course...chair placement auditions are later in the year.

And next summer we're doing a concert tour of New Zealand and Australia, playing in the Sydney Opera House!! <3
