Maybe Maia shouldn't have giggled, but Pixie's attempts at eating the too large piece of pineapple was priceless. She took the piece and cut it into two, offering the smaller piece to Pixie. "Better?" she asked.
"Probably not tonight. Since Toby and Dari are staying. We're going to play snake. And maybe some other games." She took another bite of her hamburger. It was even better than the burgers she'd gotten at the beach shack!

Pixie accepted the now smaller pineapple and gulped it down, then wandered over to Lori and climbed up his arm like a bird, side-stepping onto his shoulder and eying his sandwich. Lori just laughed and shook his head while the dragon made himself comfortable. He'd have preferred to take his jacket off, really. Dragon poop would be hard to explain at the drycleaner's.
"Oh? That's nice. I'm sorry you had a bad night."

"He wants your sandwich," Maia observed, finishing her own. "Would he sit on my shoulder?" So Lori could eat in peace. "Toby said the first night is the hardest. But I think it'll be a while before I adjust."

"Maybe."
Lori put his sandwich down, wiped his hands together, and rose slowly. Pixie looked to him as if he had been deeply offended but didn't jump off. His balance was a little off but when Lori scooped him up and placed him on Maia's shoulder he fluttered his wings to steady himself and accidentally smacked her in the head. He settled in in a few seconds, though, and watched Lori return to his seat and commence of finishing his lunch. How long the dragon would stay was up in the air, but at least he was being good.
"The first night is the hardest, but it's always hard to leave home. It'll be rough for a little while, but like he said, it does get better."

Maia was so thrilled at having a dragon on her shoulder that she didn't mind one bit the fact that he hit her with his wing. She reached a hand to stroke him. "Hi Dragon," she greeted him. He didn't seem as clever as Seamus, more like a bird, certainly, than she'd expected: but maybe that was his size. She'd always heard dragons were very smart.
Maia didn't seem to quite believe Lori. She took a piece of fruit and plopped it into her mouth.

Lori was no idiot. He could see a stubbornness in this woman. He just smirked and continued eating, shaking his head.
"I think you made a friend," he said, abruptly changing the subject. Going home was off the table. So was relocation and living on-base, and they'd just spent two hours going over information.
"Okay, what do you want to talk about?"

With the subject changed, Maia finished her fruit and flashed Lori a smile. "I've made quite a few today. You, Seamus and Pixie." She gave Pixie a pet.
What she wanted to talk about? Hm. "Traveling!" She decided. "Toby showed me Breyer and I want to see it in person. And other places too. I've never seen anything beyond the town I lived in. And there's a whole world beyond that. Even if some of it is desert."

Lori nodded and smiled. Sure, he could call her a friend. Most entities were in and out pretty fast, but they were bound together by their mere existence. They were abnormal. Freaks kept in touch with other freaks to feel less... freaky.
"Oh, did he? I actually have family in Breyer! It's really beautiful. Maybe you can see it some day." He took a sip of his soda, looked down at it and then back at Maia. "You ever had soda? Anyway. It's always good to get out and see the world. This job sends you everywhere, and I'd say most of them are interesting in some way."

"Really?" Maia asked, smiling at him. "I'd like to see it." She studied him for a moment. "Yeah, I like soda. There's a burger place on my beach, and I went there often enough. Its sweet. Oh! Speaking of, I still have some salt water taffy in my room. Want to try some?"

"Yeah, I don't see why not. You'd have to swear you wouldn't tell anyone about it, all of that legal stuff to keep everyone safe, but you don't seem like the type to need to be told not to inform your colleagues about the magical forest of fairies. Besides, they'd just think you were crazy, I'd bet."
Oh, good. So she'd had soda. Anything made with 'syrup' was pretty okay with him.
"Oh, I've had salt water taffy before. It's good stuff. When I was younger I was convinced it would be salty, though."
Pixie flapped as if he was about to take off and began to tumble forward. Lori caught him by the chest and then held him in large hands like a bird's nest. Apparently seeing nothing odd about this, the dragon clumsily took to flight and ended up back on his perch atop the divider.

Maia nodded in understanding. She definitely understood the concept of keeping someone's home secret, especially after leaving her own."I don't want them to have to move, I'm glad there's laws protecting them."
"Some of the kids who'd vacationed on my beach tried convincing me it was made with real salt water." She wrinkled her nose. "Which would be awful. I like sweet things a lot better." She watched Pixie begin to flap: had they bored the dragon?
"He's really sweet. I think I prefer cats, though."

Well, the worst part of it was that they couldn't move. There were creatures and people in Breyer who were bound to their tree or pond or stone and would be stuck while everyone else cleared out to be cut down or drained or hauled away, whatever humanity decided to do.
"Hah, yeah. I just came to that assumption myself." Then Pixie was gone and Lori watched him a few moments more to be sure he was alright before turning back to Maia. Somehow he had the feeling she hadn't met many cats on the beach. "Seamus is a good boy, but he's got a lot more up there than a cat." He pointed to his own temple. Cat sidhe and cats looked similar, but the relation pretty much ended there.

"Well I don't need a particularly smart one. People talk to dogs all the time, and they don't seem very smart." They made too much noise and chased after their own tails too often for Maia to believe they had very much intelligence. But animals certainly made good company, didn't they? They didn't have to say anything for you to know they liked you. "Anyway. They're soft and they purr. And they listen."
"Do you have a pet?" She asked. "Toby told me about pet rescues on the planne. I think I might visit one sometime."

"Well, if you find the right one they do," Lori said with a little smile. He needed to warn against oblivious pet ownership but at the same time didn't want to upset Maia. He personally couldn't stand when someone took an animal in because it was cute and had no idea how to take care of it.
"I'd say you should wait until you're back on your feet to go to any rescues, and I do. I have a dog."

"I'll have to find the right one," Maia said. Her smile had faded a little. "If I do relocate, I'll be alone for some time. I don't think I'd do well trying to fit into a clan. I grew up away from other selkies, I'm not even sure I act like one. I've had more exposure to humans, and I can't pass myself as one. I've heard pets make life easier. Like a friend. I know Toby said he wouldn't just abandon me. But once this mission is done?" She shrugged, "He'll be off saving someone else's life." And so he should be; he'd saved hers. Well, at least saved her from a potential life of slavery and or painful death.
She nodded. "I wasn't thinking about getting one straight away. I thought I could visit one. Just to see." She did hate to think of animals in cages, though. "I'll practice with Seamus. What's having a dog like?" Now dogs she'd had plenty of exposure to. They ate whatever they could find and seemed to decide if something was good to eat by eating it. They were loud, some of them drooled, they dug holes (sometimes deep enough for someone to trip in, which was always entertaining.)
