Robert never thought about a price. But when he plucked the little paper out, and looked at it, he felt no sense of trepidation. Death always had a price. Sure, that made sense. But was he willing to pay it, for what he wanted?

In the blink of an eye.

"Yeah, you're right. We're probably gonna die for this." He chuckled, setting the paper to his heart. He didn't seem worried at all.

"No." Rep cut in, giving Al a stern look. "No tropical. Tropical is ********> worse, believe me. Bug bites all over, damp thick undergrowth, dangerous ******** temples where people die. And snn...sn.. ******** like." he shuddered at just the thought "Snakes."

He brushed sand off of him. "There's nowhere in all of this ******** planet these wankers and Halloween won't make terrible."

Al decided now was not the time to mention that not only did he like snakes, but bugs as well. But not bug bites of course. "What about open fields?" He tested.

"Probably full of sentient scarecrows that want to ******** murder you and everyone you love." For whatever reason, being dismal at Al tended to make him feel better.

"I think I saw a movie like that once.." Candace laughed again, rubbing her face. She wanted to go home now.

Al's eyes went wide at Rep then somehow wider at Candace, "Evil scarecrows don't really exist... do they?"

"Rule of thumb in our line of work man. You are looking at Death right in front of us. Everything exists." It was pretty solid advice he felt, he'd found out the hard way the depth of that fact.

Melvin had a cookie. He didn't even like Forturne Cookies, and breaking his open, he looked at his long question with the deepest of frowns.

Death just refused to give him an answer, and now he was pouting about it.

Screw Death and his cookies of lies! Otto probably had a 3 Muskateers bar that was ten times more tasty than that in one of his pockets!

He had stood stiffly silent at Lifen's words, his heart beating a slow, rhythmic beat inside of his rib cage, though his chest felt tight, like it was difficult to breathe. He could not listen to this, he could not listen to those pretty words leaving from her throat, words that could never be true, words that would never ever be true because he was not salvagable, he could not be saved, not like the others could. Lifen's heart was the purest of them all, or so he thought, and he did not have that.

He did not have her strength, could not begin to even have a portion of her pure and beautiful heart; nor did he have Senga's willful, persistent stubbornness that allowed him to break past the voices.

He was not strong enough, and he never would be.

Fingers closed around his wrist, thin, bony fingers with an inordinate amount of pressure to them as they pressed down harshly, and Mengyao drew a sharp breath through his teeth, hearing a hiss somewhere below his left shoulder, feeling someone press against him.

He did not have to move to know who it was. A finger pressed against his inner wrist, where the pulse beat beneath grey skin, and Mengyao turned his face towards Senga, his expression bitterly forlorn, his breath shaking slightly.

You are the wolf and I am the prey.

He looked away, looked at Lifen, heard her speak again, but Mengyao did not open his mouth to say anything, partially because he could not think of what to say and partially because nothing he said would make a difference.

Please don't take this away from me if it means they will suffer in my stead.

He was too tired for this. Gale glanced sideways at Stormy, brows furrowing slightly as he gave her a slightly bemused look, his face pale and drawn, though he said nothing.

Then he sighed, slumping down onto the ground because it took too much effort to stand anymore.

Svensyl erupted into laughter again, and Mimsy pressed her lips into a thin line, more annoyed by the Jabberwocky's assumption that she was feeling more broken after this than any actual feeling of sadness.

She couldn't be upset or disappointed that her wish had not come true; he had, after all, used them very admirably to make his point. Death knew humans well - maybe better than they knew themselves - and she could not logically find any fault in that. There was only one thing guaranteed to humans, and he held that in his palm, so it made abundant sense that humans themselves were firmly settled there. Allowing herself to be miserable now in spite of that understanding would be succumbing to emotion, and in the midst of her conflict against feelings, she preferred to avoid that.

The symbolism was a little amusing, were that the case, that he offered her own destiny back to her. Now she held it in her own palm, packaged in plastic and a thin wafer cookie.

Her wish was something so serious that she'd truly believed it had ruined her life. She had been so sure that fixing this one thing would have set her back on track. But staring down at a the little golden cookie, her wish seemed much simpler than that. The great amounts of importance she placed in one single, improbable event would never have fit into something so small, and realizing as much was a granted wish in its own right.

This was the ticket to saving themselves, he'd said, but it felt like his gift might have saved her already.

Candace spotted Gale collapse to the ground and her eyes widened. Gale?! She quickly got to her feet, scrambling a bit in the sand, and fell to her knees beside the boy again. "Gale?"

"Oh . . ." Was that too soon to do? She merely blinked at Gale's look of confusion and calmly watched him sink to the ground. Even Candace's concern didn't puncture the placid look on the trainee's face.

"He's tired," she observed most solemnly, then added in that same tone, "I think it's my turn to carry him piggyback." That was fair, right?

Senga watched the whole procession with a hooded expression, and when the Horsemen turned his attention to them again, he frowned, his long wings fluttering anxiously before slowly slowing into motionlessness again. A cure, he'd said. And wouldn't that be nice - no voices, no pain, no hunger gnawing away at him each hour, every day. But it seemed like an easy out. A get-out-of-jail-free card, and oh, how he hated those.

He thought about Lifen, and her decision to be the last cured. And he thought about Mengyao, who he'd promised not to leave. His fingers clenched and unclenched, one hand still wrapped gently around the Conquest Noble's wrist, thumbing over the veins that spread out beneath the skin.

"Thank you," He finally said, tightly, quietly. "I am grateful for your offer, but I cannot accept." The Horsemen was right, in the end. He wanted to find his own way. Perhaps out of some too-far gone sense of pride, or a burning desire to suspend the downfall of his carefully made promises. He had lived with the voices all this time, pushing through, stumbling, falling. They had become a part of him, and he would claw and bite and tear to rip them out of the hollows of his body, but he would not succumb to someone else's cure and give in so easily to the temptation of letting himself go selfishly free. Something told him to be afraid - you're throwing away your only chance to take back what you had before, - but even the fear didn't come. It was almost like surfacing from below the waves and taking a breath he didn't know he'd been holding.

Senga sighed and folded his wings, a finality in his stance. This was his path. There was no turning back now. No magic cure.
