Candace, he thought, where is Candace.
Didn't I tell you? She left you. You're not worth anything to her. And why would you be? In the beginning she didn't even think you were capable, you weren't even on her radar.
"She cares about me now. It's different. It's different. She treats me with respect."
No she doesn't. She doesn't care about you at all.
"She does."
No.
Stop it.
She has no interested in useless little brats like you.
<< Gale. GALE. >>"JUST STOP IT!"
There was a loud bang as the gun went off, Gale firing automatically towards the Phoenix, though his breathing was heavy and erratic and he felt as though his heart were going to burst out of his chest. The blackness was welling deep within his chest and he could feel it climbing into his heart and seeping into his thoughts.
"GALE!"
Candace's voice.
He turned, desperate, his eyes widening as he saw her, stumbling towards him. She tripped, nearly falling, but Gale was already running towards her; a horrible, cold fear had started to creep its way up his body.
She's okay, he told himself, she's fine.
Yeah, but for how long? What, you think YOU can protect her? You, who can't even protect your own sister, or the girl you love, or the division assistant you killed?
"I didn't kill him," Gale whispered, and his fingers trembled around the gun. "I didn't. I swear, I didn't kill him."
You did. It's your fault. If you hadn't been on that mission, he would have survived. But he brought you along - his mistake - and now he's DEAD because of you.
"I didn't do it."
He had reached Candace now, and despite everything, despite his fears, his uncertainties, his everything, he did not hesitate to throw himself into her arms and wrap his own around her waist once more, just like he had before seeing the crossroads.
At sixteen years old, he was still a child, in such a small body; a short, wiry body that he hated for being so small - a body that was trembling as it pressed against Candace's, needing the reassurance that she was still there and still alive.
She doesn't like you, remember.
"She does," he whispered, his voice muffled. "Stop it."
Just stop it.

Nothing ever smelled more delicious and the idea of being back there, putting together a meal of her favorite things to share. She could dig them up herself, make the meal up...
A meal with a friends.
Mea's leg slipped and for a moment her eyes focused. "Hn?" Pictures came in blurs and her head felt dizzy for a moment. Reaching a hand out, she reached for anything - anyone.
Discovering adventure, new places.
"I would like that." She whispered back to the various soothing voices.
It was that warmth she felt when she had first seen the vast lands of Halloween and beyond. The sweet smell of succulence as she unearthed the treat. The joy she felt when she was near people she cared about. Could that really be bad? Who would want to leave it.
You can be there with them.
Oh that sweet pleasure. Here there were no hunters hitting her over the head with long pieces of wood - no pain, no anguish or confusion, it was all very perfect. Her head twitched as a lurching pain filled it. Again that whiteness, were there others?
Go back to simplicity. Be safe. Go home
"Home."
The rabbit seized and fell, her knees hitting the hard ground under her and she shrieked as loud as possible. Did she want to stay there? Oh more than anything. She could have lived there like that. Reality had different plants however and she pulled back as the fog lifted from around her. Her pink eyes searched wildly as she slowly brought herself from her feet. "I-it almost got me." She struggled to say, a shudder moving through her spine.
Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad. Grabbing a hold of her ears she shook her head tightly to dispel that thought permanently. Alamea was here, now - and there was more to be done. Stumbling back towards a familiar group she moved out a hand, placing it on Amarus's shoulders.
"Please tell me you're real." She gave a frantic look to Olivia and Faustus. "That you're all real." The rabbit shuddered and moved between them all. She had only known them for hours really, but she yearned to see their faces.
"Are you all alright? ...Did you see something... weird?" Mea stammered and looked over them with a pout. "I don't even know what that was."
As quiet filled the air she glanced around at the rest of the students which seemed to be yelling over near a few portals which had sprung up. Somewhere there was a dog and a horse she'd lost. Frowning she tugged on her ears again, wilting a bit under the pressure of it it all.

Candace shoved through bodies trying to get to Gale, throwing herself at the boy the moment he was within arms reach. She hugged him, nearly crushing him against her as she buried her face against his hair. He had hugged her as well, a very reassuring feeling. "Gale. Gale. Gale. You're safe oh thank god you're safe I'm sorry I let you go oh god Gale I'm so sorry." She wouldn't let go of him. She wouldn't ever let go of him.
Ah! He was shaking! Why?! She cooed quietly, nuzzling her cheek against the top of the boy's head. "She does what?" She asked quietly, flinching as the voices grew quieter. They were still there, but now it sounded more like something one would hear as background noise in a horror movie. It was awful. Candace held him tighter. "It's okay. I'm here. I won't let you go again. I won't. I promise. I swear. I'll protect you. It'll be okay. We'll go home and have tea and it'll be great. Shhhh, shhh. It's okay. I'll protect you." She could. She could do it.

She was hugging him back - she wasn't pushing him away, and Gale could feel some of the tension in his shoulders easing. His fingers were still trembling where they pressed against her back, but she was not pushing him away.
Not yet.
<< Gale. >>
Jinhai's voice sounded as though it were coming through a radio, staticky and unclear.
<< Gale. >>
...Ginny.
Candace's voice was somewhere above his head, her face pressed into his hair, which was embarrassingly dirty and streaked with dirt and blood. Gale let his eyes fall shut, nuzzling his face against her shoulder.
"...she cares," he mumbled, his voice muffled. "You care. You care about me, right?"
Some part of him needed to know, but some part of him already knew.
She doesn't care.
"She does," he whispered again, desperate for it to be true, and buried his face against Candace, his arms tightening around her, clinging to the girl he had come to regard as his older sister as though if he let go, he would not ever see her again.
"I'm the one who's supposed to be protecting you."

Gale's words were strange but she said nothing more regarding them until he asked her a question. She frowned. "Of course I care. You're my Chipmunk, my Little Boy Death." She said gently, honestly. Candace had never lied to Gale, she had no reason to, and she had no intention of starting on that habit anytime soon. She pet his hair, pressing a kiss against Gale's temple. "Shh, it's okay. It does't matter who does the protecting, okay? I'm here. I won't let you go."She wouldn't. She would protect him. She wouldn't let him go. If Gale needed a Moon she'd be his Moon. If someone else needed her, she was damn sure bringing him along. He was not leaving her sight again, especially when it was clear how distraught and vulnerable he was right now. The whispers. They were annoyed. She flinched again and closed her eyes. What the hell were these whispers?! Why?! Why now?! They weren't Atropos...

As the undulating phoenix drifted toward the portals, Aymet was seized with a horrible realization. Amityville. The destruction wasn't going to end with the horsemen's home. They would lose their home too. There would be nothing. Someone shouted to push it in the other direction, toward the hunters' portal. Had to. And maybe the horsemen could get their vengeance there. Not that he could think of a better idea on the spot. There were too many people talking all at the same time. Everyone, talking, it didn't leave him any room to think. At least if they could speak a little louder, but the voices were just out of range, a distracting buzz. Whispers that made him worry even without knowing what they said. His bones went flying, FEAR-charged, to strike the phoenix in successive strikes. But the whispering followed him no matter where he went. Imryn.... Imryn..."Hmm? Who is there?" the ghoul mumbled groggily, quite enjoying the happy floating grey space thank you. It was nice there, thinking about the new things that they had done together. But something was wrong.. no no, don't go! Imryn whimpered a little as the pleasant memories slowly began to fade away and reality once again set in. Nope. Not at school, not there having fun with friends. They were still surrounded by Hunters and trying to fight off the phoenix, or something. She wasn't sure anymore. It hadn't been real, none of it. Once she was able to shake a bit of the fog from her mind a bit more, Imryn took a good look around to see what they still have to deal with. The dang phoenix was still there... only now it seemed to be heading towards the portals.
Lovely.
No matter what else happened, she didn't want that thing reaching Halloween. It was bad enough that there now seemed to be others... voices... rambling around in her head, and despite not really making anything out, it made her feel frustrated and weak. Despite that though, Imryn tried to keep the phoenix from heading towards the Halloween portal, lashing out with her claws in hopes of directing it towards the other.

The whispers, just below the threshold of understanding... they wanted her to give into the despair, and for a moment, she almost did. But a shouting voice reminded her that Amityville, that all of Halloween, was in danger from the very creature that had caused this. So somehow she roused herself, taking first a few stumbling steps forward, then breaking out in a run. She managed to make her way near the portal, between the phoenix and her real home. She called her spear - for a terrifying moment she was afraid it wouldn't come, just like in her Trials vision, but then it was there in her hand, almost stabilizing her against the nasty susurration in the back of her mind. She had done so well with it against the Hunters today, she just needed her training from War to hold up for her once again. So she cocked her arm and threw, and to her intense relief, it flew true. She saw it score a hit, and although she couldn't be sure, it seemed like the creature was just slightly less inclined towards the portal that led back to the rest of Halloween. She let her spear dissipate again, but there was no feeling of success or relief as the thing continued flying forward. What if nothing they did was enough? She needed her friends, but whatever was eating her mind seemed to murmur that they didn't need her. So at the same time that she was looking for them, glancing between the crowd and the bird formed of Insanity, trying to decide on her next action... even if she saw someone she knew, would she go to them? She couldn't be sure, and the longer it took, the more uncertain she became. ------------------------ (( OOC: Character Name: Mitzi HP: 30/30 Target: Phoenix Damage: 2 Effect: Insanity for 1 IC week Number of People Currently Attacking Me: 0/3 )) Quote: alliisara's character Mitzi is attacking the phoenix for 2 damage! Her name came from somewhere far off and the rabbit turned and pursed her lips together in annoyance. Jumping back into her little band she wobbled her head and clasped onto a flower from famine she had left resting near the top of her ear - a reminder to watch out for giant boomerangs. But in this case she pinched at it to assure herself it had not been the source of the sound. After she had confirmed it to not be the culprit she set out to find the source.
It was to no avail.
Shouts from the other students caught her attention as the large form of the phoenix seemed to be moving towards... Her heart caught in her throat and she watched as her friends moved to attack it. Olivia had landed a blow and ran to Amarus as she tripped. Mea growled - nothing and no one hurt her friends and got away unscathed. Following the example Olivia - and now Faustus as she continued to watch - had done she sank her body low to the ground
You're too short, you won't reach. You're too small to do anything An inner voice had picked up which made her feel meek. With vindictiveness driving her, she continued. "I've lost Fallow and Dev, you tried to lead me away, you've made my new friends hurt - no no NO NOOO!" It was a deep and guttural growl, and then she was off.
With a running start past them she lept into the air with a strong bounce. Flailing her arms she opened her mouth and chomped down on the mass. There was nothing to taste and Mea let go, feeling satisfied with the blow.
Gravity was a cruel reminder of reality though.
Somewhere between a crunch and a pop Mea squealed in agony. Grabbing hold of her knee she righted herself, but kept a hand on it while she managed to stand. She was panting and clenching a hand over it, but watched with the slightest gleam of hope as the over-sized bird shied a little from where she had attacked. It was only a small move, though she assumed it was only because she had collided with it. At this point the mouryou was unsure if it could really feel what had happened. But she wasn't sure about a lot of things lately.
"Olivia, is she okay?" She said as she wobbled back over to the band, looking down at Amarus with concerned eyes.
Too late, you didn't do anything to help. You couldn't help her, you couldn't find your friends, what CAN you actually do? Mea grabbed an ear and pulled at it, whispering uncertainly to herself "I did everything I could." The internal struggle weighed heavily against her and she desperately tried to change the subject as her eyes began to water. "That was a great move you two made." She said with nods to Faustus and Olivia. "I'm sure with those it'll head the other way."
But as before, Mea couldn't really be sure of anything anymore.

Ah, this was bad, this was bad, this was really really bad. Fallow's ears folded back, and scanning the crowd as the fog cleared, he keened softly and under his breath. He felt sick, he felt light-headed, he felt ---
Wrong.
The word stung in his mind like he'd been physically lashed.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. You're all wrong.
"No."
He rumbled the word, desperate for the voices in his head to go away. Desperate and searching for a way out. "No, no. I am right." But the whispers continued anyways, soft sweet nothings against his skin, biting and tearing into his ribcage and into his core. He needed to find Dev. He needed to find Mea. He needed to find someone. Anyone. Anyone at all. Stumbling forward, the Púca growled and turned his head towards the sound of voices - both familiar and unfamiliar and everything in between. "Devvvv," He crooned softly, and then louder, "Mea!"
He trotted forward, finding her a few paces away. His ears quirked, and quietly, hesitantly, he stopped, as though uncertain that she would even welcome him if he said hello again. He knew Dev was somewhere here too, he'd heard her, but... but was it his place to find her? Was it his place to bother either of them at all?
You're wrong.
The voice was still in his head, still chanting like a mantra that he couldn't shake.
You're all wrong. You don't belong here. Not with her, not with them, not with anyone.
No. Fallow hissed. He was right now, he was fine. These people accepted him. They had to. Had to. Blindly, the Púca turned away, only to realize the phoenix sweeping towards one of the portals. Wait -- His breath caught in his throat, wait, stop, no. The stallion abandoned his insecurities for a moment to blindly pursue the bird, as though hitting it could ward it away from the portal that lead home.
The blow to the bird was useless. A glimpsing attack at best, and the Púca was too tired, too insecure to try harder. Tumbling back to the ground and trying not to fall, Fallow buckled over and panted, his ears pricked back as the voices exploded once again in the back of his mind, all climbing over each other and creating a cacophony of sound in his head.
"Please," he whispered, softly, desperately, "shut up --- shut up."
They only grew louder, more insistent.
Fallow needed someone now. Anyone.
Mea.
He'd seen her earlier. Now he needed her. Backpedaling through the crowd, the Púca broke into a run, searching faces and clusters of hunters and students that he couldn't identify nor cared to at all. "Mea!" He called out, his voice like a broken record, the name on his lips over and over again. He called for Dev as well, but after the attack, he had lost the Cu Sith's voice. Finally seeing a petite little rabbit with -- oh, was that Amarus? -- Fallow leapt forward before the insecurities could stop him and crashed into the rabbit gracelessly.
"There you are." He rumbled to her, patting both of her shoulders and looking her up and down for any serious injuries before shying away; a horse afraid of a lashing, a colt with too-long legs and too-long arms and wrong.
"Are you alright? You are not hurt?" He turned to Amarus and her friends and bowed his head in a hurried hello, as though he wasn't quite sure how much time they had anymore at all. "It has been awhile -- hello, yes, yes, hello to you all."

"Mea!" Her ears twitched and she shook her head violently. "No more, no more, no-" It was like a train hitting a wall and she made an "oof!" sound as she gazed back warily to her attacker. From what she expected to be another white-coat came a shock to her which nearly brought her to tears.
He's not really there. You lost them because you couldn't hang on to them. The inner monologue mocked her, driving knife after knife into her innermost fears and regrets, each insecurity worse than the last. How could she keep going if inwardly she had such a bad image of herself. With a flick of her ears she poked out a finger into his shoulder.
The rabbit's eyes couldn't hold out any longer.
A solid stream of tears moved over her cheeks as she regarded the Puca. It wasn't often that she cried. Shame came over her and she rubbed her eyes a few times, desperately trying to keep to her normal tone."M-my knee." She stammered, but shook her head in each direction. "I'm not important right now, Amarus is hurt maybe." The rabbit continued her tears as she looked back to the others.
Such weakness to cry - you're probably going to make them cry too.
Mea bit her lip and clawed at her eyes softly, trying to stop from sinking further to despair. Was he real? He'd been looking for her? Her bright pink eyes were red and puffy and relentless with tears and she looked back up to him again. "I'm so sorry." She glanced to the others. "Sorry I don't mean to, I just can't stop I-" The Mouryou paused and met Fallow's gaze. "...Fallow"
And then she broke down completely.

The figure Sherry was following began to fade. Sherry almost didn't notice. She was still in her mind, laughing and chasing bugs. But somehow...this time Sherry couldn't catch any. She just--
A voice cut into her mind. It wasn't the laughter of her cousins, the voice of her aunt, or anyone else that she knew. No, this voice was odd and--
"Look at what?" The question fell from her mouth even as her eyes saw. The field was gone, the fireflies long dead. In their place there was the remnants of a fog, and people. People and creatures.
"But..." In her mind, her cousins were laughing. She could almost feel the fireflies on her skin, see the flickers of light in the night. She blinked, and saw the coats of the Hunters, the eyes of Halloween. "No..." How had that happened. She had been far away just moments before...
A voice in her head hissed.
Sherry heard other voices as well. Laughter, her aunt's warm tones, and other voices she couldn't place. She--
Armagnac's voice was strong and clear. I....I.... Sherry didn't fully comprehend what had happened. The warmth in her heart faded suddenly. She missed the field and the fireflies, but she knew that was a long time ago. She had gotten lost in her memories...during a time when she really couldn't afford to. I...
Sherry could hear the annoyance in the wyrm's voice. She could hear other voices, too, but for the moment, Armagnac's was louder. I'm sorry...
