Ever smirked sarcastically and moved to the side, out of Ares' arms. With the locket still hanging from one of her hands, she went into the bathroom, unstoppered the tub to let the water out, and then went back into the main area with another towel for her hair. She sat on the chair at her desk and rested the locket gently and carefully on the desk. Then she proceeded to work the towel in her hands through her hair.
"I... won't lie. I like the locket. Not only is it beautiful on the inside, but it's quite magical on the inside. And it also has a great purpose. It will help me find strong pulses of magic when I want to and tell me what areas I should avoid if I don't want to come in contact with it that day."
It was like pulling teeth trying to get those words, those compliments out.

Ares could tell that she didn't like complimenting him in any way. It practically oozed with the somewhat formal way her words came out, but he ignored it. Why would he turn down a compliment? Sure, it was sorta forced, but it was a goddamn compliment. That should explain it all. "Well, I'm glad," he said, eyebrows lifting ever-so-slightly. "I thought you'd appreciate it."
But that wasn't what he'd given it to her for. Then again... like hell he was gonna just up and tell her. He'd rather just let her figure it out for herself. She was smart. Besiiiides, it was way more fun that way.

Ever's head was tilted to the side as she was drying the tips of her hair with the towel. Her eyes turned to Ares and they were still scowling. Like a proper lady, she had her legs crossed at the knee and she was sitting straight in her chair, despite toweling her hair.
"Ares, gifts are not going to work on me. I'm not one of my mothers, and I'm sure I'm not like the mothers of your children. Your gifts are just going to piss me off. Although, how would it be any different, me being pissed off at you? So I guess it doesn't really matter."

He fought the urge to laugh out loud, but a few chuckles still got by before he could cover them. Ah well. He'd rather expected something to the point of her being ticked. It was just her way of letting him know she cared... pfft, that made him want to laught even more. What a silly thought!
Calming himself down, he sat down on her bed and leaned back, resting one foot on the other knee. "Eh. That's what makes it interesting."

Ever's scowl turned to a glare and she stopped toweling her hair so that she could straighten her neck back up and look directly at him.
"Who said you could sit there?! That's my BED! And you know, you're starting to talk in riddles again, and I HATE that! You're worse than Hades!"
She hoped that dug in a little. He did not get along with his brother Hades at all. But Hades was the god of the Underworld. He was the Furies' main god, as well, since they, too, were associated with the Underworld.

"Who said I couldn't?" Ares challenged. "It's a comfy bed..." A smirk spread across his lips, his meaning painfully obvious. But that comment about Hades... He huffed at it. He muttered to himself about it. He was better than Hades! It didn't matter how, but he was! He simply was.

Ever rolled her eyes and shook her head. She was proud at herself. She could see that Ares had bristled defensively when she mentioned his brother. Bingo. She was back in control again, finally. 'Bout damn time.
"Well, you better enjoy it now because that's the last time you'll be on that bed, and you'll be on it by yourself."

Of course, out of that whole sentence, all Ares heard was 'that's the last time you'll be on that bed by yourself', and he didn't really care if he was wrong or right. It just sounded like a good idea, and he planned on implementing this good idea.
Walking up to her, Ares brushed some of her still-damp hair out of her face. "Really now?"

Ever shivered slightly as Ares' hand brushed against her skin and hair and as she felt the air hit her damp neck. She reached up to rest her hand on top of Ares', but she caught herself right at the last moment. She quickly stood up from the chair, which caused her front to brush against Ares', and then stormed over to the other side of the room.
She spun around and glared at Ares with her arms crossed over her chest. "Nice try! I'm not falling for that again!"

Ares pouted slightly. "Falling for what?" he asked. He knew the innocent route didn't usually work for him, but that had never stopped him from trying it. He quickly dropped the facade, however, as it would not help him.
He was feeling so weird around Evermore. It was like he wanted to just... well, to just have sex with her, but he didn't want to make her upset unless it was intentional. He had no idea where these feelings were originating from, though he was sure (however he denied it) of what they were. It unnerved him.

Ever's hair was starting to turn red once again. "Ares.... STOP playing innocent! You're far from it! I'm not going to be your next conquest, the next girl to provide you with a child! I'm only 16 and I'm focusing on my studies! And, oh yeah! I despise you!"
She put her hands on her hips and, despite her mature words, now appeared quite her age.

Ares frowned. Her words... they sort of stung. He didn't know how to respond correctly to this, so he put his hands in the air. "I may not be innocent, Evermore, but neither am I guilty of the charges listed against me." He sat boredly in the chair she had recently vacated, idly watching her hair flash for the umpteenth time that day. "I am not looking for another child, nor am I looking for another mother to my children."
He glanced away, his hand fiddling with one of her things sitting upon the vanity. "I don't know what I'm looking for, to be honest." The words were quiet, but nonetheless audible, and he felt stupid and vulnerable for having admitted such a thing to someone who professed to despise him.
He planned to change that.

{{Song being played: Oliver James, Long Time Coming}} Ever opened her mouth to respond but at that moment, her neighbor, Clarissa, started playing music like she did almost every night. Usually, Ever really enjoyed listening to it. She didn't keep it on all night. But right now, as she listened to the soft song playing, a scowl appeared on her face. "You've got to be kidding me...." Ever sighed and rolled her eyes. She would try to continue without focusing on the song playing. No double meaning in it. Nope. "Look, I think I know what you're looking for. It's what you're always looking for, right? A fun fling." She wasn't being cruel with what she was saying. She was being honest. How was she to know that Ares was actually developing stronger feelings for her other than casual, fun ones? She leaned against the window behind her, a small bench running along the bottom of it. But she didn't want to sit down on it yet. "You know, if you would just be honest about that, I might... might have trusted you more and might have been more open to the idea. No sex, obviously, but I'm young. I'm curious. And I like having fun. And our hate for each other obviously fuels some sort of... passion between us."

A half-chuckle left Ares' throat. The music... ironic. He felt as if it were speaking to him, and he wondered if this was some sort of set-up from higher beings. "Evermore. I am being honest. Whatever you may think of me, I'm honest. Riddles are great, and messing with people is fun, but I don't lie just to lie. I'm not looking for a fling. I said that I don't know what I'm looking for, and I'm telling the truth." Ew. Ew ew ew, these words, so open and blunt, tasted foreign on his tongue. He wasn't used to being this exact, this specific. He was already missing his riddles.
But he knew that Evermore would never trust him if he went to his riddles now, and he was finding himself rather wanting her trust. He didn't care if he needed it; he wanted it. And goodness knows that what Ares wants, Ares gets. He doesn't care if it takes a while. If he wants it, he'll get it.

Ever looked at Ares for a few minutes. She was considering him, his motives. She still did not trust him, but did it really matter? If she didn't allow herself to become emotionally involved, did it matter if she trusted him or not?
Ever sighed and finally sat down on the window bench seat. She brought both her legs up and propped them up against the wall of the bench seat. Since her robe was shorter, she didn't want to reveal anything.
"Fine, whatever you say, Ares. I guess you're going to try to get what you want in the end, anyway. You don't know what it's like to NOT get what you want."
Ever was looking at the locket in her hands. Finally, she unclasped it and hung it around her neck.
