At the same time Dari was making his call home, Toby had dialed Maia. He leaned his elbow against the railing of their motel room and stared down into the empty pool while it rang. Again, Maia would see an unknown name and a randomized number.

Maia picked up the phone immediately. She put it to her ear. "Toby?" She asked. She remembered the last time they'd gone away for a mission, he'd had an unknown name unknown number.

Toby, however, had gone through this before to some extent.
"Hey, love! What's going on?" he was further away from the group and not worried about making too much noise, not that he would have been concerned even if he was in the room.

"Nothing," Maia said, gazing at the phone as if she hoped face time would open itself up. "There's not much to do at work, Peaches is as lazy as ever, and the house is quiet without you." She leaned against the back of the couch.
"What about you? Are you alright?"

"Call Lori. Make him come amuse you," Toby suggested, and then nodded as if Maia could see him. "Yeah, we're fine. Dari and I were on the morning shift so we just got back to sleep. It's sort of crazy, honestly. It's all computer work but I rank highest, so... Is the case circulating around HQ yet? Usually someone blabs."

"Yeah. They say people have a satyr hostage," Maia sounded worried. Computer work, they wouldn't be face to face with those people. Good. "Love, I'm really worried about you being there," she said. Couldn't he do computer work from home?

Said men were hunters, and it wasn't a satyr. They had to find their hideout, and they had to get in and out with as little collateral damage as possible. That was never a phrase you wanted to hear, but Toby wasn't going to worry Maia. He was, after all, very hard to kill. He'd been wounded in the field before a bunch of times. It never really prepared you for the next one, but when it was over it was over, and he'd have no scars to show.
"It'll be in and out and I'll be home in no time."

Maia wasn't reassured. "Right," she agreed, after a moment. "Just be careful." She needed him to be. She paused, and she abruptly changed the subject; "There's a meteor shower next month."

"Is there?" Toby was happy to change the subject. He wasn't sure how much more he could dance around the truth before it started feeling like a lie. "We should make plans to watch it. Can you find out where the best point of view would be? Maybe we should go out on the boat."

"Yeah. Some comet's supposed to fly past earth and a meteor shower follows. It'd be nice to go out on the boat," she added. "Do you think Dari would let us use his telescope?"
