"Alright. Come on, Cody. We'll cobble something together. You gonna help, Dari?" Toby asked.
"Sure." Dari managed a smile, and the group headed down the stairs to make a meal. They sat down to eat and there was no fourth degree, no prodding. It was all just friendly family conversation. Not a bit of it was about work either. Nobody wanted to think about work.
When it was all over, Dari grabbed his bag and offered Cody a smile, then went with him out the door to drive back to Cody's apartment.
"That was nice," he said as he plopped down in the driver's seat.

It was only the second day when Cody's phone rang in the evening. The caller ID would read an unknown name and number. The number was randomized. Nobody could call back, nobody could trace it successfully, and it was the safest way to let agents call out.

Cody answered quickly. Even if it was some random "you've won a free cruise!" scam, it was worth the chance that it might be news about Dari. It was only the second day, but he was already worrying.
"Hello?"

"Hey, hon!" Dari said. Although there was excitement in his voice, he was keeping it low. He'd only been able to call during the shift change when he was supposed to be going to bed. It was later in Oklahoma than Arizona by about two hours.
"How are you doing?"

Not a scam. It was Dari! Cody beamed. "Hi love!" It was wonderful to hear from him. "I'm alright. How are you?" That was what really mattered.

"I'm fine! There's not much exciting happening here yet. I thought I'd give you a call while I could," Dari said. He could be heard shifting. "How have the kids been?"

"I'm glad to hear from you," Cody said. He was glad to hear Dari's voice, even if it was only for a short while. "I'm glad you're safe." For the time being. "Good," He said. "They're great, really. I let them have a movie day."

"Ooh, what movie did you watch?" Dari asked. Something history-related, probably, unless he was an especially cool teacher. He was an especially good teacher if it was history without the kids noticing, though!
Toby had been worried that the others might judge Dari for his sexual preference, especially out here in Oklahoma. Dari personally didn't give a s**t. He outranked them all, and he wasn't going to watch his pronouns.

Cody smirked behind the phone. "Sense and Sensibility." He said, remembering the kid's reactions. They hadn't been altogether interested until they'd started recognizing the actors in it. "I thought they could do with a break, since they're having tests in other classes."

"Math tests suck," Cody laughed. "I was a kid too, I know what they're going through." He wanted to wrap his arms around Dari. "I never thought you being a few states away would feel like we're world's apart."

"It won't be long, I promise." What he wouldn't give to just lay in Cody's arms. He should have brought one of Cody's shirts or something. Would that even help? 'When I'm back, we'll go to our spot and... I don't know. Something special." He held on to their last night together like it was all he had left, when really it had only been two days ago.

"We'll set up camp there and sleep overnight," Cody chimed, happily. "You can explain to the law enforcement that we're on some sort of mission." A mission of love. "I know you've only been gone a little while, love. But I miss you."

"That sounds perfect." Dari actually sighed, releasing a bit of tension. Even imagining it helped. Oklahoma had been about as welcoming as they had expected. He and Toby had been faking Southern accents from the moment they realized it'd get them ahead. it sort of fit Toby, it was strange, but he had been born in the south after all.
"I miss you too. I think about you all the time." He'd never had to go on a mission when he had a significant other at home, but he couldn't say that. It wouldn't make any sense.
"Hey, once things get going I may not be able to call much, alright? But don't think I'm in trouble. Once we..." Locate the target. Relocate our position. Break cover. All confidential. "...well. It just may not be possible after a while. But I'll call you when we're coming home for sure."

Cody smiled. "We'll do that, then," he promised. "I think about you all the time, too," he admitted. "I hate that I can't come over and see you."
He hesitated. "Love, just call me whenever you can. I want to know you're okay."
