Ships of the Line:
Lance,
Ackbar Capsule: In 125 ABY, the Galactic Alliance noticed a disturbing build up in the forces of the resurgent Galactic Empire. This was punctuated by the creation of the
Pellaeon class Star Dreadnaught, a massive terror weapon reminiscent of the
Executor or
Sovereign class vessels. The Galactic Alliance needed a vessel stronger than its
Scythe class Star Battlecruiser. The Lance was designed to fill that gap. The ship was designed with the most advanced technology the Galactic Alliance had at its disposal. Cost was no longer an issue with the prospect of a major galactic war looming on the horizon.
The
Lance is a behemoth, measuring in at 20 Kilometers long. She has a massive bank of superheavy Ion Engines that propel her at speeds almost twice as fast as that of the
Pellaeon, and her shields are thicker than her Imperial counterparts. She also has three sets of redundant generators, making her a tough nut to crack. Behind even the shield generators is a very thick setting of a new advanced Crystalline Armor that is much stronger than the standard armor of the Imperial and Alliance navy. This is what also gives the
Lance her trademark eerie cobalt glow. The armor can also be grown, should the proper materials be acquired, in a costly but vastly less time consuming process than the forging of standard Ship armor.
The
Lance’s sensor suite is a true marvel, however. It can detect and pierce almost all forms of jamming, and can identify ships under almost any circumstances. She can also throw up a massive number of different kinds of jamming signals. This makes her hard to track, and even harder to catch, while she can coordinate a dozen task forces spread across the galaxy if necessary. The C&C capabilities of the
Lance are extraordinary.
The weapons on the
Lance are also formidable, possessing 5,000 Dual phase Turbo Lasers, removing the dependence on Ion Cannons of previous vessels. The Turbolaser complement is *less* than that of the
Pellaeon, but she carries almost twice as many Warhead Tubes, and of variable bore, allowing it to change the type of Warhead she is firing, ranging from Standoff Torpedoes to fighter grade weapons. The Capability to fire Standoff weapons allows the Lance to engage the
Pellaeon outside of the other vessels range. Also impressive are the new Aegis anti-fighter turrets making their debut on the vessel. Designed for anti-fighter use, it seamlessly combines a fast reaction turret (similar to those of the old
Lancer Frigates) with a heavy Quadlaser turret and a dual Anti-Fighter Warhead launcher, which generally holds either Concussion, Cluster, or EMP missiles. However in close range exchanges these warheads can add a significant punch to a broadside. The
Lance also includes 20 Gravity Well Generators for trapping its prey. It also includes a new Revolutionary, very energy consuming Gravity Well Disruptor, allowing it to escape even the most stringent traps. (Note, this only works against artificial Gravity Well generators, not against natural gravity wells) While her weapons complement is different than the standard strategy, it allows for a more variable form of warfare.
The crew complement required is also smaller than that of the
Pellaeon, but she holds less troops. She also contains 20 Wings of Fighters, 4 of each classification (5 Light Fighter, 5 Medium Fighter, 5 Heavy Fighter, 5 Bombers) with numerous Shuttles, dropships and transports. She can hold 5 Regiments of Marines and their associated vehicles and equipment, and contain enough transport vessels to bring them to ground quickly and efficiently.
To power all of this advanced technology obviously requires a massive powerplant, which is a major weakness. With good gunnery, once the hull is breached, if you hit the powerplant, the ship can be easily destroyed or disabled. That is not an easy proposition, as the reactor itself is entombed within armor almost as thick as that of the hull. The
Lance learns to present minimum angles of attack against the reactor when her shields are down and her armor is in danger of breaching.
The
Lance is an incredibly expensive vessel, and by the beginning of the War, only three were on the books. Two had been completed, and one was in the process of being finished. The third, the
Tre’fey was ambushed as she pulled out of dry dock towards the beginning of the war. She smashed through her attackers and led the Imperial Navy on a merry chase, claiming three entire battle groups before finally the combined might of the Navy destroyed her in the Ansion system. The other two, the
Lance and the
Ackbar fought throughout the conflict, but all contact with them was lost after the fall of Coruscant. They are believed to be the command vessels of the Core Fleet.
