"Oh, for crying out loud..." Manta sighs, following Shizuka outside. "Don't let Faust make you feel guilty... he's in better shape than he looks. Besides, I know he's capable of staying up for sixteen days without sleeping." He picks up a shovel. "I know you're hungry, and this kind of thing is hard work. We all appreciate your willingness to do the job, but at least let me help. If you faint, the only doctor we have is Faust," he adds.

Shizuka just nodded, continuing her work. It wasn't about pity, it was out of thankfullness. She hadn't eaten in what seemed like forever, and she felt that she needed to thank them somehow. "Please excuse Shizuka's stubbornness. Amaya apologised on her shaman's behalf. "Once she puts her mind to something, there's no stopping her."

"Wow," says Manta enviously, "That's an admirable trait, finishing everything you start. I wish I could say the same, but my dad pretty much controls everything I do. The classes I take, the company I keep... there's no escaping his judgement. That's one reason I love hanging around Yoh and his friends. Once you get to know them, you'll feel like you can say anything around them. Er... well.... you know what I mean," he finishes lamely.

Shizuka smiled and nodded in agreement, but deep inside, she wished she had those problems. Her parent were gone. Her mother was dead and her father, well, Shizuka stopped caring about him a long time ago, since he deserted her. Shizuka wanted overprotective or posessive parents, but that could never happen. She had no one, no friends, no family, no one living, before that day. So fat, her life was a very painful and lonely one.

Manta wishes he could tell what Shizuka is thinking, but the sadness in her eyes is like a cold barrier pushing him away. Smoothing down the cememt with his shovel, he says, "you know... if you ever need someone to talk...er, or share your feelings with Amaya's help, I'll always have time for you. And if I'm not around, there's always Faust." he shrugs helplessly. "I know, he put me off at first too, but you'll never meet a smarter guy. He's got a stack of PHDs under his bed that's taller than I am."

The smile on Shizuka's face suggested laughter, getting Manta's joke. If he was joking, that is... But she already knew that Faust had to be smart, if he was doing surgery on someone without sedatives or pain-killers. Shizuka enjoyed watching Marco bite the bullet.
She nodded, agreeing that she'd trust her new friend with her problems.

( biggrin Happy birthday, Taurosgrl!!!! mrgreen )
Shizuka's smile is encouraging; Manta breathes a sigh of relief. He'd been so worried that she'd be offended or upset. She just seems like such a serious person. "Anyway," he says, "we all look out for each other; no problem is too big or too insignificant to matter." He pats down the filled pothole. "Like, Ren's pothole. Did you notice how many people stepped forward to help? Even if one of them was using reverse-psychology to get someone else to do it?"

Ren snubbed Manta's comment about his pothole problem thinking he was being mad the 'butt' of a joke.
Horo laughed, "I always stick to my goal too!"
"Oh really?" Ren cut in, "What about the time you said you were going to go shopping during the tournament, and ended up coming back with a handful of spoons?"
Horo frowned, "Dude, it's not my fault, those natives really know how to persuade a guy..."
Ren turned away grumbling about Horo's incompetence.
"What was that!?"
"If you didn't hear it then, you'll never hear it now."
The two began to bicker.

Shizuka just stared confused at the boys, wondering why they acted like they hated eachother so much. Wasn't everyone here supposed to be friends??

Faust drifts outside; he seems to be drawn to conflict. "Ren," he says, "Here is an example of a dedicated, hard-working, uncomplaining child. Shizuka, how responisble! The former pot-hole looks lovely. If ever I were to have a daughter...." he says sadly, meeting the eyes of no one.

Shizuka just stared. She was honored to be complimented like that, but daughter?!?! That sort of scared her. Sure, Faust was nice, but she didn't know him too well.

Noticing her discomfort, Faust says quickly, "Mein Gott, did I say that out loud? Um.... I meant nothing by it.... I just mean to say that your parents are very lucky."
Manta grabs Faust, yanking him down so he can furtively whisper something in his ear. Blanching, Faust cringes.
"Oh. Sorry about your parents," he murmers awkwardly.

Ren smirked, "Well it's too bad I can't be your perfect little daughter, Faust."
Horo snickered when Ren mentioned the change in gender. He was invisioning the perfect girly-Ren.

Shizuka just sat there for a little, thinking about her parents. Her eyes appeared lost in thought. Her mom, dead. Her dad, who knows where. She would never see either of them again. (not like she cared about that with her dad...)
