I started F. Horn in my second year of band half way through and I just got the music to some of my pieces the weekend before the concert, I had only three days to practice. And I still don't see how the french horn can have such a small mouth piece when the trumpet has such a big mouth piece. I play both the trumpet and the french horn.

Inthenameofweird pyrojazz kiefy Inthenameofweird Yeah, I play both mellophone and french horn. The mellophone is the worst instrument in the entire world... excluding oboes. I never thought I'd find a harder instrument to tune than the horn until I picked up one of those monstrous things. If I wanted to play something that you hold upright and play with your right hand, I would have played trumpet! That's my stance. ok take your stance and shoo. go on shoo now be a good horn hater and get out. If you were being sarcastic then I'm sorry but shoo anyways. ;_; I'm not a horn hater. That hurts me right here. *points to heart* I love my horn with a passion. He's a Holton Farkas H-179 nickel silver large bore beauty. biggrin I just hate those Olds mellophones we have. The valves always stick and they sound awful. sanctuary_of_chaos I think ramshorn means to play really loud and brassy? You've got the basic idea. Not so much loud as harsh, you know, without the mellow, deep tone quality of a mature player. Have you ever seen an early hunting horn? You know, like, in the movies where the horn is curled and they use it to introduce the king or something? Like that. oh If its a old mellophone I don't blame you now. I'm sorry. My school has some beutiful horns but the trigger loves to stick and all the rotors stick

I just had my first day of marching band practice. The mellophone is so cool. (but my section leader is kinda creepy...) I play the french horn in concert which I have been doing since 7th grade. I'm a freshman now.

Hah. That reminds me of a time when we played a jazz peice in concet band near the end of the year for fun. It was weird 'cause I was playing my Fench Horn and had no idea how to swing. I know the feeling.

They don't even allow it in my school though. >< That kind of bothers me, even if I can't swing. I'm going to make a private band for all people who can't be in jazz, that's what I'm going to do. Muahahahaha! What now!? domokun

Man a now Legendary horn player (Shawn Hanlon)(or something like that) for his last jazz concert in high school. In a song where he would normally improv on piano. He grabbed his horn and did some awesome Swing based improv.
