She struck for the shoulder next, digging in and snapping the round piece of marble right off of it's body. It crashed several feet away, and after a bull kick to the face, so did she.

She was up on her feet before the bull could turn to attack Dawson, and her trident burrowed into it's back this time, pulling it's attention back to the girl who was tearing it apart.

It knocked her off of it's torn shoulder, and then moved to step one hoof directly onto her body, disabling her. She tried to move her trident enough to use it as leverage, but she found she couldn't move her arm with the pressure it was placing on the muscles within it.

When it shifted, she felt the weight on her arm release, and grabbed the trident to prod it right under the hoof. She pushed, shimmying her way out of it's hold and bouncing off to safety.

"Okay." She clanged the trident prongs against the bull's face one final time, forcing it to back up when she came too close to it's eyes. She moved towards Dawson, and put herself in a defensive position. "Ready when you are." Maebe had done a great job as usual to soften it up. Dawson had darted in and out to keep its attention on him as best he could, but now was the moment of truth: teamwork time.
Knocking the bull back hard enough to make it shake its head, he took the opportunity to let her climb on. The weight was much more different in combat than it was at a lackadaisical walk, and there was no way for him now to keep it from trying to gore him. But together, with his shield battering it away again and again like a marble ping pong and Maebe's trident striking it from safety, the bull began to crack and flake.

Their combination proved much too fierce for it to take. Dawson turned his head as their opponent all but literally exploded from the force of their attacks, the shattering sound ringing in his ears. Grinning from ear to ear, he tilted his head back to grin mighty dimples up at Maebe. We did it. "Up top!" he cheered, raising his hand up for a high five. "Thing didn' stand a chance!" None of Maebe's movements were slow this time, as she hopped up onto his shoulders and shifted until she felt herself nestled firmly into position. When it was safe to move, she dove in, chipping and crushing with the added advantage of being much higher than usual. Her trident came down hard, and with each thrust, so did she - she held on to the staff every time her body threatened to topple over, and pushed herself back up. It had been a good idea, but she'd never expected it to work this well, on their first try. When the beast exploded, she screamed and used the wings of her trident to block the debris, wincing at the pieces that got through. She could feel something zing across her cheek, and she dismissed her trident, raising her hand up to touch her cheek. When her fingers pulled away, they were stained red with the tiniest line of blood. Dawson did not get his high five until a few long seconds had passed, where Maebe just stared at the tiny, insignificant thread of red against her fingertips, and reached out to take the hand that was waiting for her. "Help me down, please." She murmured, her voice clearly distracted.

His smile disappeared at the sight of blood. Carefully, as if Maebe was porcelain, he bent down and helped her off. The second she was clear, Dawson reached into his pocket for a bandaid without having to think about the action. "It didn' cut deep, did it?" he asked.

"I don't think so. Just a scratch." She reached up and felt it again, trying to determine it's deepness. Her hands dropped and she turned her cheek up towards him; half to give him the chance to put a band-aid on it, and half to hear his thoughts. "I can't see it. It is just a scratch, right?" It was embarrassing how badly her voice was trembling. It had to be just a scratch. Thaw would fix it right up, like he did everything. He wouldn't dare leave her with a mark on her face. He couldn't. Her eyes, wide and childlike, waited for the verdict.

"Uh." He was a little taken aback by how afraid she was of the answer. Dawson cupped her jaw, swept away a few stray locks of hair, and examined it. "Nah, I don' think it's bad. Yer guy'll get it, no worries."
But he still felt better putting a Black Widow bandaid on it, just in case.
"I'll keep the shield up higher next time," he added as an apology.

"Dawson." Her voice iced over with warning, tilting her head back to look at him with slit eyes. She rose one finger up and placed it firmly on his lips. Then, the iciness slowly melted away, and her lips turned up to one side in half of a smirk. "We were awesome together." She finally admitted, dropping her hand and allowing herself to enjoy the pride that they'd just earned. "Which band-aid did you give me?" The worry had fled, or perhaps she was just that good at hiding what really mattered when she realized that he was on the verge of blaming himself for it. She crooked her arm under his, and turned to walk towards the lake with him, as if nothing had happened. It won't be a problem. Thaw answered her silent question, already working on knitting the skin back to perfection. She felt the warmth against her cheek, and her smile turned up higher with relief.

He swore one of these days Maebe would really get him with the hot and cold act, and he'd fall over in relief and curse. "Black Widow," Dawson replied, hoping it was a good choice. "The kickass Russian spy lady."
The vines wouldn't stop him this time. He let them slap against his shield and tried to keep it steady as he waded on through.

Black Widow was on her cheek. Maebe tried her hardest not to smile at the implications, carefully watching him fight his way through the vines and make it to the other side before attempting to do so herself.
Sticky, dense sludge was all she stepped in on her very first step. She pulled out of it, ripping away only to stumble into a set of vines that threw her all the way into another patch of darkness. She was stuck there, on her hands and knees, for quite some time. Ripping away to freedom was a torturous and exhausting task.

She tried to find a safe spot to start again, but even as she stepped into what looked like perfectly clear water, the color drained from the liquid below her and she was sucked in like quicksand. She struggled to free herself, but the vines did it for her this time - picking her up into the air and swinging her from one, to another, until they dropped her upside down on her head at the shore.
She just laid there for a second, and groaned.
