Miyuki followed but her eyes couldn't help but take in all the stuff.

"There has to be a whole history here," Miyuki murmured.

Two centuries worth of things, things that spanned two centuries, who knew what those sort of things said about the time the General ruled.

"The belongings of every man, woman and child who was ever arrested during the General's rule," Maravel said sadly. "If they had anything on them that could be taken away, that is."

He took Earendil's cloak from the shelf and held it out to the children. Andarien took it and draped it over his arm, and Maravel continued to pass things to them: Earendil's sword, his bow and quiver, arm guard, belt, daggers, coin purse, and his pouch with the precious Elfstones inside.

Miyuki took some of that equipment as well, such as the arm guards, belt, dangers, coin purse and pouch. Leaving Andarien with the major weapons like the bow, quiver and sword.

"I think that's all of it," Miyuki murmured.

Since they still had their father's bag.

"Then we should get these things back to their rightful owner," Maravel smiled; and he led them back out of the room and locked it again after them.

As they headed back towards the stairs, Andarien asked curiously, "Are you going to give back everyone's things? Or is Ada going to be the only one to get his things back?"

Maravel looked uncomfortable when Andarien asked that question, and he reached up and rubbed the mark on his forehead - the space between his eyes - nervously.

"I would that I could," he murmured. "But many of the owners are deceased ... and I do not remember who the rightful owners are to all of the items."

That sounded sad, that all these items would just be here and never picked up again.

"Maybe one day, a historian will go through all these things," Miyuki commented softly, "Since they're now all part of history."

She wondered if this place even had a historian anymore.

"A historian?" Maravel repeated. The term was unfamiliar to him, and he looked to the children for an explanation.

"A historian," Andarien nodded. "You know, someone who records history so that people know what happened in the past?"

Maravel's eyes turned upwards as he thought about it. "Like a chronicler?" he asked hesitantly.

"Well... yes and no," Miyuki replied, "A chronicler is someone who writes events as they happen in the now. They write about what happened for better or for worse, but a historian is someone who looks back on that history, with all the knowledge that person who wrote the history in the now didn't have."

She motioned to the direction they had been in.

"They also gather old writings, and even items like these to put together what the past might have been like when they're not fully recorded. No one records everything, like what an average person went through, or how old techniques are used when better ones occur. Also chroniclers tend to record what they experienced or seen, but a historian talks to the people, it's the story of everyone not just one person."

To her, it was very much like trying to know about the culture of the now, and all the people. Only she liked dealing with the present, though she didn't mind reading about the past.

Maravel nodded thoughtfully. "That does sound like a useful sort of person to have around," he murmured.

"So you don't have someone here like that?" Andarien asked.

Maravel shook his head as they started up the stairs. "No. And I don't know if there was one before the General took over the country. He had already been in control three years before I was ... um ..."

He tried to think of an appropriate word. Recruited? Pressed into service? Enslaved?

"How about forced into service?" Miyuki suggested kindly, "Since that's technically what happened."

She paused and thought about it, thought about how the General was and how so sure he was up to the moment of his death.

"I don't think there is even a chronicler, if there was, the history of the past 200 years might be a bias towards the General for.. .safety reasons," Miyuki admitted.

There was a lot of rebuilding needed to be done here.

"Perhaps I will speak to Princess Mari about it," Maravel mused as they left the staircase and headed back down the hallway that led to the visitors' chambers. "It is true, anyone recording the events of the past two centuries would have been in peril for their life. Yet it would be good to have, if only to avoid repeating the same events again."

Andarien felt sick at the idea of someone else like the General taking over the country again. "I hope it never happens again," he muttered darkly.

If Miyuki's hands weren't full she would have patted Andarien on the back. She knew this had been a rough few days on him, perhaps the most out of everyone besides their ada.

"That I can agree with," Miyuki nodded.
PostPosted: Sat Mar 15, 2014 9:19 pm

"I think that is something we all can agree on," Maravel said solemnly as they reached their chambers. The guards were gone from the door now, though there were still a few dotted throughout the hallways. Maravel knocked at the door and waited for someone to open it from within.

Inside the room, Earendil was just beginning to stir, and though he didn't hear the knocking, he rolled over and pulled the blanket snugly around his shoulders.

"Lin?" he mumbled without opening his eyes. One hand stuck out of the blanket and fumbled around the bed, looking for her.

Lin paused for a moment before going to get the door. She figured it best to let the children in since they were carrying all of Earendil's things.

"Come on in," she told the children and Maravel, "Earendil I think is just waking up so let me see first."

Since she did hear him call her name.

Maravel stepped aside and let Andarien and Miyuki lead the way into the room.

"See, Nana?" Andarien beamed at Lin. "You didn't have to worry about Ada sleeping for days!"

He was quite glad of it, too. He wanted his father to be all right!

Earendil heard faint voices, and he forced his eyes open, though they didn't want to open far. He looked through bleary eyes around the room, and when he saw the four who were in there, he relaxed. He wasn't alone, and his family was safe.

Lin smiled, "I'm glad."

He looked a bit sleepy still Lin noted, perhaps he needed more rest.

"How about just setting it over there for now?" Lin suggested to the children before turning to Maravel, "Thank you for your help."
