"A sound theory, considering it was Haradhel who changed him," Earendil grinned. "We were all amused at the time, simply because it was him."
He paused. "And the fact that it was Tinuviel who set them up," he added with a laugh.
Leilani blinked. "Tinuviel?"
"Earendil's sister," Ulani explained. "Elrohir's niece, heir to the throne."

"How did ada-thel do that?" Miyuki asked.
Who had been listening in on the adults quietly, which wasn't that common since Miyuki always needed to be doing something, but she was sitting on the floor with her tails thumping against the wood.

Earendil chuckled softly at Miyuki. "Well, when Elrohir first met Haradhel, he made her angry ... Tinuviel made him go apologize, and she talked him into taking her to the festival of the enderi, and that was where it sort of took off."
Tinuviel had gotten the ball rolling, so to speak; but it had been clear from the outset that the two had been destined to be together.

"Oh....." Miyuki replied wondering how that all turned out.
She didn't know that about her uncle at all.
"I didn't know that! It was a good thing he listened."

"It sure was," Earendil grinned. "We're all glad she's a member of the family now."
"Some of us more than others," Ulrich said expressionlessly, which made Ulani giggle.
"At any rate," she smiled, turning back to Leilani, "how were Ruwen and Burl when you left them?"
Ulrich leaned closer to Lin and Earendil to explain. "Ruwen is our daughter, she was our second child. She and her husband, Burl, had moved on when we did, but they didn't come back with us."

"I see...." Lin nodded slowly.
Sometimes it was easy to forget that Ulrich and Ulani had other children besides Aliya and Adonai.
"What are they like?" Miyuki asked Ulrich.

Ulrich smiled softly, his eyes growing unfocused. "Ruwen was a gentle a soul as you could ever find," he murmured, his tone warm. "In looks she is like her mother, in temperament like myself. She never had an unkind word to say to anyone ... calmer even than Adonai, though she loved to make jokes and tease people."
"She still does," Aric chuckled. "She looks more like Ulani now than she ever did before."
Ulrich chuckled back. "Aye, well. And as for Burl, he's a Southlander - was, I should say, since if course he doesn't live there anymore. He's a good man. He was a southern Lord, though of course he gave up his position long ago."

Miyuki looked to Ulani to get an idea of what Ruwen would have looked like, and she supposed she got a good idea.
"I see! She sounds really nice," Miyuki nodded, "Do you write letters to each other?"
She didn't understand that where the elves went, once they were tired of the world was a place where you couldn't see or hear from them again unless they came back.

Ulrich's smile turned sad. "Unfortunately, no," he murmured, "that is something that we cannot do. She has sent us a letter with Aric and Leilani, but that is the first communication we have had in a very long time."
Earendil wished he could explain things to Miyuki, but even his understanding was very limited. Ulrich and Ulani and Aric and Leilani would be the ones who would be able to give more detail - except that they were forbidden.

That sounded really sad, to not be able to talk to your family like that.
"Oh.... that's sad...." Miyuki mused on this.
She wondered why it couldn't be that she lived in another world because her ada said this was a new thing.
"But at least you have a letter now."

"Yes, yes we do," Ulrich agreed happily. "And since it's more than we've had in centuries, it's good news. So we're happy."
Earendil smiled at Miyuki. "Sometimes a parent knows it's just better to let their children go ... live their own lives. The same way my parents finally realized they had to let me go so that I could be with your and your mother."

"But wouldn't you get lonely if I left?" Miyuki asked him innocently.
She thought it would be lonely not having a kid around at all.

Earendil hugged Miyuki. "Of course we would. But if someday you meet someone very special, and you want to get married and live somewhere with them, we would understand. We would want you to be happy. But I won't ever be alone anymore - now that your mother and I are married, we'll be together forever."

"Married? Why would I want to do that?" Miyuki asked.
That made Lin who was listening in on it all laugh, because she probably said the same thing when she was little.
"Wow... that comment brought back memories..."

Earendil chuckled and hugged Miyuki tightly. "You might change your mind someday. I did."
He of all people was well aware that the heart had the ability to change anyone's mind when it came to love and marriage.
