Oh, the poison. No, no rl base. It's just a very aggressive magic(potion or otherwise)-resistant substance which kills the host body by asphyxiation. If it has difficulty doing this, it will enter other vital organs such as the heart, brain and liver and attempt to paralyse them directly until the body dies or suffers total organ failure.

I just made it up, literally, as I was writing it. My only aim was to make it really, really nasty and stubborn, and the mechanics just came from that XD;
