Aristotle came up with the principles of association: Contiguity, similarity and contrast. Thomas Brown expanded on these by adding: Frequency, recency, duration and saliency (intensity)

Disproven by Swammerdam and Glisson nonetheless. A Russian scientist named Secheno discovered that reflexes are innate and magnitude dependent. And then Pavlov came along and was like DUDE not all reflexes are innate, we learn some as we live!

An innate elicited behavior is one that is hardwired into the nervous system and is elicited when the proper stimulus is present. A reflex is a innately elicited movement of a part of the body which promotes the well being of the organism.
