So I was wondering... Is there anyone here that actually likes fruit cake? I can't eat it myself. The candied fruit does not taste good to me at all. Tell me your opinion of this traditional holiday food.

Well it makes for a great door stop if you ever need one. My family has a tradition of passing the fruit cake as a gag gift. Who ever gets it has to rewrap and regift it to someone else the next year, never the same two people get it year after year.(it is about a 20 year old Clayxton fruit cake.)

REMEMBER THIS ABOVE ALL ELSE`FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS EAT FRUIT CAKE.... biggrin blaugh rofl smile

I've never eaten a fruit cake, don't think I could... They just look.... ewww....

We have one of those gag gifts as well- ours is a horrible wine and cheese holder that one of my uncles wives got for my mom a few years back. She Since my uncle wasn't with that wife the following Christmas, she just stuffed it in a gift bag and it became a gift for my aunt. Then my Grandma. Then me. Then my aunt again. Then my cousin. And so on and so forth. The past few years it's been reduced to a White Elephant gift, so it can potentially go to anyone now.

We had it last year, so we threw it in a box and actually got some cheese and crackers to go with it- and one of those bottled of grape juice that look like wine bottles. Made it suck a bit less, I suppose.

I can honestly say I've never had fruit cake and I don't particularly care to try it either lol.. I agree that it just doesn't look appetizing.. and hearing horror stories doesn't make it any more so lol. I would hate to be the one person who actually likes that stuff and then getting handed a 20year old fruit cake and trying to eat it.. *blarf*

My ex's family used to do White Elephant type gift exchanges at Christmas that was always fun. My family doesn't do anything like that.. The closest "gift" tradition we have is that at least one person in our family always ends up with a present that is just damn near impossible to open. Think an entire roll of duck-tape used to wrap a box.. then micro-waving, said box a few seconds to melt the tape.. and then wrapping it with another roll of duct-tape.. WORST GIFT TO OPEN EVER... thankfully it wasn't gifted to me.. but I wouldn't suggest wrapping your gifts this way as that particular gift actually got damaged by the heat from the microwave.. I tend to lean for the small gifts in a small box, wrapped, put in a slightly bigger box, wrapped, put in a slightly bigger box, etc... lol

*finishes off her hot-coco* Can I get another cup?

I will gladly pour you some Ms. Erin. Would you like whipped fream on top with a cherry? (Pours himself one-goes and relaxes by the juke box as he mutters to himself that FRUITCAKE has the taste and consistency of drywall and cardboard-EEEWWWW!!!.)

I always end up doing some kind of white elephant type thing each year. Usually it's the kind where each person takes a number out of a hat to determine what order people get to choose. Each time a new gift is chosen (but before it's opened) the person gets to decide if they want to keep that one or trade it for one of the gifts that's already been opened.

Anyway, It's funny about the fruitcake. I don't actually know anyone who eats it and yet it's sold every year. Where do they all go? rofl

*pours self some hot chocolate too - with a healthy splash of peppermint schnapps*

I like some fruitcakes.

I wish I could have hot cocoa right now, that would do wonders for my soul, but it will worsen the state of my kidneys.

Hmmm,
we dont eat fruitcake. I think the custom in orthodox christians is to bake some cake with a coin in it or something, but our family is atheist. So... i saw this fruitcake on the photos and no, i would rather have a chocolate one, thank you biggrin !
Its so nice everyone has some tradition with gifts, we dont have anything like that biggrin

i don't eat fruitcakes either,
they look so EWWW.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 03, 2009 9:48 am

They do look like concentrated 'ewww' :< I think we pretty much all agree on that xD

--Our White Elephant thing is fun, I look forward to it every year. Everyone contributes a gift between $10 and $20 and then we draw cards to see who picks first- Ace last :3 Best card to have, especially when you know what everyone else has and can take the last box or the gift you want.

Aha! So there is at least one person who does like fruitcake smile Thanks Exxos.

Sorry you can't have real hot chocolate. I can at least torture you with some delicious looking virtual hot chocolate. Not as satisfying but easier on the kidneys.

Do you enjoy any of the secular holiday things? Our family isn't religious either (well some in the extended family are) but we still do tree, gifts, nog, ect. We're more into celebrating being with family - especially those we don't normally see the rest of the year.

Well,
since our customs are from our homeland, Serbia, we celebrate the Christmas actually on New Year. That means that the Santa comes on the 1st (or whenever my mum gets the time to put the presents there without us noticing it). We get presents from Santa and from parents, and we usually give some small presents to our parents.
Now my sister and i usually go to some party on New Years eve, so we open the presents on the 1st with our parents smile . Mum usually makes coconut balls (omg i hope this isnt rude or something), and she bakes some chicken or turkey smile .
