"Yes, it worked before. On three!" she assured her partner. It seemed that it had worked just fine before. It was tricky to get the trees down on this near-vertical surface, and this particular tree looked like it might require a little more effort. She got on the same side as Nadeshiko, giving her plenty of room on the tree to break it off. Instead, she took out her kunai and shoved it with great force into the rock face. Then, she stood on it with one leg. From this angle, they'd be working in the same direction. Therefore, it should be easier to coordinate their efforts. "One..." she said, bracing herself. "Two..." she continued, adjusting her grip on the wood and coiling up the muscles in her arms to perform this arduous task. "THREE!" she cried, pulling with all her might. The two broke off the limb, but it was with more ease than Akiko was expecting. Her left shoulder dipped down, throwing her off-balance. She quickly threw her arm up to the tree and swung on it a few times. She kicked her feet over to the kunai and on the third try caught her foot on it. She pushed herself off the tree and regained her balance and her grip on the cliff wall. As she reclaimed her kunai, she looked up to Nadeshiko and smiled. "Good to go!"

Teamwork Training - Trimming the Dangerous Tree

Akiko started making her way up to the final tree. She slipped a few times on the surface; the loose rocks fell down to the raging foam below. "Be careful here," Akiko said, making sure she didn't get too far away from Nadeshiko. The surface got especially slippery as she got very close to the tree. It didn't look like they'd be able to approach it from that angle... but she was already quite tired, and she didn't want to waste energy. She took her kunai in hand and began to score the side of the cliff to make it a little rougher. She tried digging a few loose rocks out so she could put her hands there. After a few minutes of effort, she finally traversed the gap. She got up on the tree, which didn't feel particularly stable. She made sure she wasn't putting her whole weight on it. She stretched out her hand to Nadeshiko. "Here, take my hand. On your count, we'll pull."

+1 to Nadeshiko's next focus roll

The Uchiha watched as the pair of students sailed through their training. It seemed as though Akiko had a bit of a strategic mind that Sukotto hadn't noticed before. Of course, this task was much more simple than any sort of battle they would inevitably face in the wilderness, but she definitely showed promise. He was glad to see that she utilized her kunai for the purpose of gaining leverage instead of just using it to cut into the tree, which would have taken a long time to work. While it was apparent that the two girls hadn't had much training in the skill of grappling, this proved to work to their advantage, as neither of them held the other back. In a funny way, it actually ended up helping them by increasing their odds of successfully working together. Sukotto began to wonder if his old two teams, the squad that he had commanded, and the squad he had been part of as a Genin, would have functioned better if they had emphasized teamwork more.

After using her kunai to give herself leverage, Akiko managed to impress Sukotto once again as she made a few cuts into the rocky surface of the cliffs in order to create a bit of friction for her to use to complete the task. He was also quite happy to see that she was willing to lend a hand in getting Nadeshiko to the spot where she needed to be. Sukotto wondered if they would have figured this out so quickly if he hadn't emphasized that they work on a team. If not, then he figured it was probably a good idea to give hints like this in the future. Figuring out things on one's own was one of the best ways to truly understand and then learn things, but a tip here and there really seemed to go a long way. Unfortunately, most students didn't seem to grasp this concept until they reached the stage of Genin. Sukotto wondered what it would be like if he had some control over what the academy taught the students. Perhaps he would understand its methods a bit better and improve them since he had some actual experience in the life of a shinobi.

Sukotto was happy with what he had seen out of the two girls, but knew that it would take much more time before he really understood them before he was able to formulate any sort of decent strategy about how to help them reach their full potential. At the very least, it was clear to him that they worked quite well together on a team when it was requested of them, so he felt a little better about taking them into the wilderness with him. Unfortunately, he knew that they really did lack the proper level of skill to handle a tough mission such as this, but that couldn't be helped. To compensate for this, Sukotto would be very vigilant, constantly watching out for the safety of his squad. He knew that they could probably handle themselves for the most part, and he would put that to the test, but he was still a bit unnerved by the task that laid before them.

While thinking about the personality of his squad members, Sukotto decided to take a bit of a break and continue thinking about the elemental affinities that he had been considering in the previous training session. He had previously been thinking about the water affinity due to its versatility. Sukotto didn't know much about it apart from the peeks that he had managed to steal of the higher ranking shinobi, and the stuff that he managed to see Aya do. A bit of the more interesting things that he knew about the water affinity came from the books that he read. He had once read about a deadly technique that involved surrounding one's target in a bubble of water. Inside of this bubble, the target was unable to move, and since the bubble was filled with water, the target drowned at the same time. It was a ninjutsu that acted quite like a genjutsu, and Sukotto liked the thought of trapping one's opponent in an immobile state. Unfortunately, he wasn't sure if the move was real, or just theoretical.

Indeed, the water element was quite handy as it provided a defense as well as an offense, unlike the techniques of the fire element that Sukotto had seen in his experiences. Another one of the elements that the Uchiha knew to be quite useful was the earth affinity. Unfortunately, he had much less experience with this kind of element, but he knew that it was possible to create tangible clones with it, which could be quite useful in both offensive and defensive strategy. These clones were actually capable of attacking opponents, as well as distracting them away from the user of the clones, just like a regular bunshin would. Sukotto wasn't sure how sturdy these clones were, but figured that they could be crushed with one or two attacks. If it happened to take two attacks, that would create a huge advantage for the user, as hitting a clone would really tell someone whether it was the actual ninja or not.

Since he had pretty much wrapped up his thoughts about his team's personality for the time being, Sukotto figured that he'd give his chakra another workout, as the previous session hadn't quite tired him out very much. This was actually quite unusual for a typical training session that was based around chakra. The way Sukotto trained normally caused him to spend at least a little bit of chakra whenever the training veered off in the wrong direction. Fortunately, the previous training session went so smoothly that the Uchiha hadn't lost a single spark of energy. He only hoped that this next training session would go the same way. However, he would be training a little harder, as he wanted to increase his skill at focusing on things while he trained his chakra to become more efficient, so it would be a bit more tricky for him to not spend any this time around.

She was pleased that her and Akiko's combined efforts were paying off as she listened to the satisfying snap of yet another tree branch. She waited until Akiko had gotten herself off the tree and onto the next before moving down herself. Until another strong gust of wind blew and battered at her again. Although it seems more terrifying to move upwards, it is always more dangerous to be moving in a downwards direction with something there to shake off your balance and focus. However, it seemed that Nadeshiko was both getting used to and tired of the wind, and this time, she hung on with relative ease.

Nadeshiko scaled up the tree with elegant ease, quickly following Akiko. It was a lot easier once the other girl had roughed out the smooth, slippery surface of the tree and carved out small foot and handholds into the trunk with her kunai. Nadeshiko was impressed. But she could feel that Akiko was trying to keep as little weight on her feet as possible. This tree seemed slimmer and weaker than the previous. Nadeshiko took her hand, and, as light as a feather, spent a couple seconds searching for a firm place she could stand on. Generally one to do things by hand rather than with tools, she was nonetheless curious to see if it was really an effective technique, or just something Akiko was particularly good at, she slipped a kunai out of her obi. Kneeling down, she made cut out a deep groove in the branch with her kunai, then dug it in relatively deep, place both her palms on it, and began counting. "One. Two. THREE." With that last boom, she pushed the kunai backwards, and the branch sliced cleanly off.

Thankfully, the two girls managed to finish their training session quite quickly. "Well done, both of you. I would normally give the two of you a break now, but unfortunately, we have a mission that needs doing." This generation of shinobi wouldn't be able to take things as lightly as the previous generations had. The attack on the village left it crippled, and everyone needed to work constantly if they ever hoped to protect the villagers. "One more thing before we move on. I want the two of you to remember this training session for a long time. If you two ever run into an enemy who you believe to be more powerful than yourself individually, always do your best to utilize teamwork if you have the chance to do so. If you remember nothing else that I ever manage to teach you, please remember this." Sukotto couldn't emphasize this enough. He only hoped that he would be able to give these words of wisdom to more shinobi of Shimagakure in the future."Let's head down to the Lagoon and Waterfall. I will explain the mission there once we arrive." Sukotto would have liked to have had more students and Genin show up, but he would just have to do his best to work with the two that actually had. Thankfully, they at least showed promise when working on a team in the face of a difficult and somewhat dangerous task. As he walked, the Uchiha continued his chakra training.

Sukotto's Hint: Don't forget that you can use teamwork the same way in a fight with any offensive skill! There is a good chance you'll run into enemies who are more powerful than your character. If you're on a squad, it would be in your best interest to work on a team!

After descending from the cliff, Akiko listened to the man's instructions. It seemed they wouldn't be getting much of a rest. She could use a break, but she liked keeping her mind busy. However, she did pick up on the suggestion that they might be fighting something too difficult to handle alone--it didn't really sound like a hypothetical situation. Were they likely to run into something like that? Perhaps it would be wisest to stay close to both of her allies. She didn't really know where the lagoon and waterfall were; she hadn't really done that much exploring of the island before. She doubted it would be very wise to do so now; this village was growing more dangerous by the day. She supposed it might be part of the reason why they were going on this mission today. "Come on," she insisted, beckoning to Nadeshiko. "Let's not get too far away from him."

Nadeshiko happily slipped down from the tree, which now looked even barere than before, and away from the cliff. She listened as Sukotto spoke. She didn't feel any negative feelings, but she would have appreciated a break. However, it was only to be expected that they would not receive one; Nadeshiko had thought that she was actually going on the mission as soon as she found Sukotto. There was some relief at the fact that she wasn't. But now that they were back to that square.....she wondered what they would actually be doing. And the lagoon and waterfall....that sounded pretty, but it was probably in as deformed a shape as the rest of the island. She hadn't been there yet though, and she was feeling a twinge of regret that she had not been to see it before the attack. Akiko then called to her as she left, and Nadeshiko followed closely behind.
