I'll try to think of something. I've always loved Xanatos' second season role as the quasi-ally. Marriage somewhat mellowed the man out, but he still retained the qualities that made him David Xanatos.

I've always liked Xanatos more than Goliath - he's intelligent, strong, ruthless and he doesn't (usually) let his emotions get the best of him. Unlike, say, our rather unstable Gargoyle leader. In other words, he's someone I can both respect and identify with - which isn't something I can often say about a fictional character.

His methods in the first season were, however, somewhat more 'villainous' than was perhaps necessary, due in no small part to his underestimating the Gargoyles. Once he came to realize what they were, however, he began using the 'attract more flies with honey than vinegar' principle. He ceased being 'the bad guy' without losing any of the drive and ambition that made him such a compelling character in the first place.

Now, what does this have to do with me? Maybe nothing.
But I wanted to explain what it was that attracted me to the character in the first place, and perhaps explain why - despite my love for the show - I can't really identify with any of the show's leading works of masonry.

Gargoyles are their official species name. They turn to stone by day, and become flesh-and-blood at sundown. This is a biological process that revitalizes and refreshes them, and also heals injuries. However, they are especially vulnerable as stone. If they are smashed to pieces, they never wake up, and remain stone pieces forever. Essentially, a less-messy death.

Many gargoyles do indeed look like demons, but there are clans (especially in London) that have bird-like wings, and animal faces. Unicorn, eagle, and lion gargoyles are common in the London clan, but rare elsewhere.



Same things that humans eat. Meat, vegetables, candy, whatever. Gargoyles have their own individual preferences, just like humans do.

Although, most gargoyles don't like pizza. No special reason, they just don't.



Indeed. "A gargoyle can no more stop protecting the [castle, building, city, etc.] than breathing the air." It's ingrained into their very being. Part of their culture.



Eggs. Gargoyles lay eggs, which are maintained usually in a communal Rookery. In most clans, the hatchlings are children of the entire clan, and have no sense of individual parents. Gargoyles do mate for life, much like humans do (in theory).

In smaller clans, or rogue clans, or even the larger modern clans (such as the Manhattan clan), gargoyles have adopted a more human family structure, with individual parents and children acknowledging each other as such.


Avalon is a good place to go to for episode and canon character information, and I believe Arcadian has a link to a site maintained by Greg Weisman himself that explores the biological, cultural, and historical aspects of these creatures he has created.
