You know, they pulled that crap when I was in middle school. We went to the Director of Education about, and he tried to tell me that dying hair unnatural colours was a gang affiliation (For the record I'm not black so I'm not gang related).

so this is going to be considered off topic...

What the heck is it people thinking every black person is in a gang?! Being part of a gang has little to do with being black. I'm a little pissed, because you're not the first person I've come across who has something like this. I know there's some stupid stereotype that all black people are in a gang, and talk lyke 'dis. let me just set it straight for you.

yes, there are black kids in gangs.

There are also alot of white kids, Latino kids, and Asian kids in gangs.

I'm barely part black, but I feel offended on the part of any race when there is some stupid stereotype slapped on their name as a human being. my friends dad is black. He is also an engineer who teaches science and mathematics, he has also recently finished three exams for being a water treatment official who will supervise the drinking water of U.S. citizens. Do you think he's in a gang.

... and wearing colors has alot to do with gang affiliation. In a high school near me many kids can't even wear their own hats to school because there are gang problems beginning to fester all around the U.S.

I think I'll be making a thread about this soon.

Well, personally, I don't like piercings, tattoos or any such thing. I just... prefer a natural body. A piercing in one or both ears looks good, but I think that in most other places, it doesn't look good. My opinion is a pretty rare one, however.

I don't think it in any way makes you "bad", though. It's simply something you do because you think it looks good/cool, so I don't see why it would say anything about what kind of person you are.

I would have to say I agree with you on that

I dont see a problem with piercings....My parents didnt like them when I was in highschool...I guess they thought it looked tacky or something....plus my dad believes in looking conservative so you'll get a job... xp ...which I guess if you have tatoos all over your face you couldnt get a job at JCPenny's or something...but I dont think piercings are that big of a problem...I just got my lip pierced and people love it...even my parents (they are alot more "open" now) I guess its just taboo to people who dont practice it or understand it....any body modification is....I mean plastic surgery is accepted by some and hated by others...so its just all in opinon I guess sweatdrop

and not all gang member are blacks....I've met gang members from every race....and lots were white too....way to generalize.... stare

I prefer my natural body not because I dislike piercings or tatoos but because I don't volunteer for pain but I personally think some are cool. I don't like pierced genitalia or nipples they disturb me. I think the person underneath the markings matters more. Such things don't put me off at all. I can understand why some may find it unsavory it doesn't look professional. And it's thought to be barbaric to some but ear-piercing recieved similar press at first so I believ soon people will open their minds and get used to such things.

Given the massive increase in body piercing in the younger generation, yeah, I'd think so - people are going to have to learn to let up on piercing and other modification policies for hiring purposes and the like, lest they find themselves with no working population and no way to find grunt labour. The youth does love the moddery, it does it does.

Anyway, on to the more important issue - the person isn't underneath the markings, that's just it. The person is as much defined by their modifications as their "normal" body. All humans are born to a certain degree of uniqueness, but none of us are naturally terribly different than any other. The self-expression one can generate from their unmodified body is very limited. Hence, modification - with piercings, tattoos, and surgical modification, one can truly "become themselves" by truly showing the way they envision themselves inside, like no unmodified human being could ever hope to do. The range of creativity one can have with their body is staggering - it's the ultimate canvas to let one's ideas flow onto.

Personally, I want more piercings (just another set of holes in each ear... I used to want a lip ring but it doesn't suit my face) though I'm quite afraid. You might say I'm an "every-thing phobic" but that's not quite it... Just cautious. (I'll come back to that subject later.)
Anyways, I don't find anything wrong with it. I believe your body is your right. You can choose to adorn and accentuate it's natural beauty with whatever you like, it's one of your few given freedoms as a living thing. If you prefer the natural route, go the natural route. It's a freedom. They say the body is a temple, and don't people carve temples, and paint them, hand tapestries? Same thing, relatively speaking.
As for making someone a "bad influence", is just a problem of people catagorizing all people as one. It would be wrong to say that, just as it would to say all black people lie, steal, cheat on their spouses, get into gangs, etc., the problem is people purposefully trying to hold themselves to a standard whether high or not. That can't be helped. Any other negative problems are just simply things like job hiring; It's a real b***h to find someone who wants to hire you since many people are worried about public image, and their own personal preference on the matter. And, I can TOTALLY understand why people dislike it. I'm not oblivious to it at all (not to mention when people get absolutely pointless things).

This is just one of those things that will eventually become more-or-less accepted through popularity; Enough people will have it it becomes routine and only mildly out of place.
