I have had 4 children and 3 epidurals. I opted to get one the first two times and now I have so many back probs from where they placed it in my back that it's horrible!!! I didn't get one with my first daughter, third child, because I didn't want my back to hurt any more. I had a 9lb 2oz baby in 3 hours without any pain meds and I did just fine! I dont think epidurals are all they are made out to be. The only reason why I had to get on on my 4th child is because the doctor made me! I was induced, a month early because she had medical probs, and in hard labor for 13 hours and only dialated to 1 1/2!!! I REALLY REALLY didn't want one!! But he said that if I didn't get one to relax my muscles then he was sending me home..lol So needless to say I got it and had my second daughter 34 minutes later. (Ya I didalted from 1 1/2 to 9 1/2 in 34 minutes) So in some cases I believe epidurals are needed but my personal opinion is that if you don't need one don't get it!! It's better for the baby and your body if you don't! If I can have a 9lb 2oz baby without any pain meds then trust me you can too!!! =) Flitter heart

I got an epidural because my doctor suggested it. He did warn me that later on in life I would have back problems, but at the time I was so scared of the pain that I would've taken anything. The epiduralist came in when the contractions got to painful and got it done the first time. My next contraction I felt nothing and was laughing and joking with the nurse, my hubby and my grandma until my water broke.

I never had an epidural, but they did give me stadol...that was just enuf pain meds to get me through. My labor was very rough, but only lasted about 3 hours once my water broke. She came right out. I guess I was super lucky. 3nodding

I ended up HAVING to have an epidural even though I fought it up until the last moment. I was induced and after hours of pitocin I gave in and let them put one in. I was FINALLY able to sleep. By the time I had to start pushing the medication had worn off. Next time, providing there is a next time I will still try to go with out it.

I stand behind you on that thought...I didn't even want the Stadol...but I was freaking the nurses out...so they dosed me up. I agree with you, try for all natural. ^_^

Epidurals scare me, I don't think nothing should touch near my spinal cord lol. Plus many women in the past have done natural. I think it'd be an interesting experince.
Atleast no what can beat you in a conversation about pain lmao Guys are so weird >.<

I'm too scared of needles to even try o_o
But my Godmother has to get them every so often because of her horrible back problems =(
She had surgery a while ago and when she did the surgen pinched the nerve somehow and it's been getting worse and worse. Now she needs surgery on the other side ='(

I wait until the end until I gave into the Epidural. They put me on pitocin but it was to painful and the pain medicine wasn't working anymore. I took longer to dilate before my cervix was pointed in the wrong direction I believe, the baby's head kept pushing on the cervix wrong >.< I'm actually kinda glad I did epidural, still it was painful to push

I was in labor for 2 days, induced labor. Started with cervadale(sp?)... the tampon like thing they put in... I had two of those... nearly called my Dr. a b***h when she was checking my cervix by the end of the second one... that was the absolute worst part of my labor. I had Stadol for the first day and a half... I hit the button every hour for them to give me more. I had tons of fun with it. The only time I got upset is when I was seeing/dreaming that the entire room was textured in pink flowers, and the time the "gnome" (my IV pump) was talking to me(a commercial on TV)... and my mom and husband were asleep so I couldn't tell them all about it. I got mad at them for being asleep. I finally after almost 2 days dialated to a 3 and was considered active labor, and they gave me my epidural (which I screamed at the guy doing it, and fought it, not because I didn't want it but because I was scared of it because of a bad spinal tap experience) it was ok, but I had the kind that dripped every hour, plus I could push a button if I needed more... which I did it wore off every 15 min. Not maybe 2 hours after I had it, they wheeled me in for a emergency C-Section, because he had bottomed out. They gave me a full spinal... now that was scary.... you can't even feel yourself breathe. So epidurals aren't that bad... but a full spinal is very scary.
