Dis Domnu It made sense. And, whelp, I tried to do shabbat last night and today, but ended up failing rather miserably. My candles went burned themselves out by 10 pm, and left me in pitch black until I fell asleep at 3 am. I woke up at 1 pm and got halfway through reading the book of Genesis, and at around 5 pm family showed up and I didn't have a choice but to stop observing. I also was unable to prepare food for myself beforehand, as anything I tried to prepare was just put back in the fridge by my family who forgot that I wasn't allowed to cook. Dinner tonight would have been an open bag of doritos, since the other food would require cooking (sunday is our shopping day, so we're low on food right now). I think that if I'm going to observe Shabbat again, I'll need to do it with people, rather than alone. aww I'm sorry! Don't try to do everything all at once- like Divash says, just do what you can. Even if it's one thing at a time, it's better than nothing.

I'll work on it. It'll be easier when I move out, and into an apartment I'll be sharing with some people who are willing to join in the celebration/observance.

I'm starting college soon, but I'm just going to community college. No student housing...
Oh I'm so excited.

It's amazing when us smart bots go in there and people realize we have serious carrer goals and don't belong. You make the dean's list, and get awards and stuff like I did.

Shabbos kinda sucks by yourself, I agree. Especially when you're a total beginner and trying to figure it all out.
When I don't have to work (emergency services isn't really a shomer Shabbos field of employment, even when you work for Hatzolah or similar, which I don't) I go to shul in the morning, stay for kiddush, try to get invited to someone's house for lunch, and then walk to nearby shiurim in the afternoons, especially during the summer when the days are so long. Otherwise I'm at home on my computer because there's no way I can go 25 hours without the internet if I don't have proper things to keep myself busy with. x_X
When I'm working, well.. Work is work. I've davened in the back of an ambulance before. lol My partner usually drives when we work Saturdays, and he's nice enough to park us in the shade somewhere when we're not on a call instead of driving around in circles. He's a religious Muslim so he gets the idea of work getting in the way of religious observance at times. 3nodding

My grades are less than spectacular, but I like to think it's because high school isn't enough of a challenge academic wise. DRAMA wise, it's grade A...

Yep! Getting my pre reqs will be hardest. I'm going into to nursing without a high school diploma. It will be tough, but I have a lot more faith in myself now than I ever did in high school. Is that all that matters? I keep getting told it's a bad idea, and no one really believes in me, save my sister...

My college is big on nursing, so I listen to my friends complain about the several hundred dollar textbook they bought.

The good thing about going to college while living in the house, is that my parents will pay for most of it...I'm very lucky in that aspect.

What sorts of things do you do in nursing, and what's the training like? I just want to do something with medicine, though I don't know much about most of the fields- just the one my dad does and a few others. xp

Well, mayhap, I'll get my stuff together before long, and get my hands on some nursing books. Y'might be able to get some for cheap, then.

Dis Domnu Errr, I seem to be running into some difficulties (so fast!), would any of you fine Jews be willing to speak on AIM (much faster for me to ask questions there)? I have Skype. If you have it too (http://www.skype.com), PM me your username and I'll try adding you, and we can chat during the daytimes when I can be online. By the way, notice I said PM and not post. This is to protect your privacy and safety online.

Dis Domnu Question: I know cooking is not allowed on Shabbat, but can someone else (a non-Jew) cook for you? And can you prepare foods (like a cold sandwich) that don't involve cooking? If there's someone whom you've hired specifically to help you out on Shabbat, yes, they can cook. But it's forbidden to ask them directly to cook, or to do any other kind of work. They should know to do it without prompting. It's okay to make foods that don't involve cooking. Hummous and pita, sandwiches, salads, that kind of thing. Delicious, especially in the summertime when you don't want hot things anyway. I've got a crock pot that I use to make cholent, known more prosaically as bean soup/stew. It can stay on for 26 hours at a time, which is what you need -- food should be mostly cooked before Shabbat begins, and Shabbat is 25 hours (18 minutes before sundown to 42 minutes after). You can set it up an hour before Shabbat begins, then just let it run until Shabbat is over. The beans will get soft and smooshy, and the spice flavors will meld. The only thing is to be sure not to add salt until about twenty minutes before you want to eat. Adding it earlier will make the beans stay hard, and that's just unapppetizing.
