I'm not sure what did me in, but I'm sure it had to do with my love of brass, machining, and fabrication that drew me in at first. I happened upon Datamancers site a few months ago, and I've been reading up on it ever since. 3nodding

I love tracing things back like so...
I think my earliest fascination in anything of the sort would have started with an incredible love of archeology when I was around the age of eight or nine. The maps, the tools, the clothes, the lanterns, digging it dirt all day to discover the mysteries hidden beneath. And my love of the Indiana Jones series helped this as well. In my youngest years, most nearly as early as I can recall, I would sit in my grandfathers lap watching adventure films.
Around the age of eleven I was completely in love with technology and knowledge in general. I would try to build all sorts of things and take things apart (hilariously enough, none of those items were realistic. So none of them worked).
Now, this may seem like it has nothing to do with Steampunk, but Digimon (seriously) got me started on the whole goggle deal. I wore them on my head and around my neck as a child. Thankfully, my grandparents didn't mind.
And generally, an appreciation for history.

Many things got me into it but I have always loved (and collected) watches and clocks. I just love how they look and work heart Also Final Fantasy 9 first introduced me to the airship; and more recently Full Metal Alchemist. Its just so pretty =^-^=

Zidane was my favorite character, I cosplayed him a couple times, but sadly had to retire the outfit last year crying Oh well it was an excellent excuse to start work on the new Zidane design *loves*

I can't remember exactly what my first experience with the steampunk subculture was. It was probably a combination of things, such as my dads love for old trains and cars, or the old movies I've always liked. My parents have often told me that I must have been born in the wrong era due to all the classical things I like.
Like the first post here, I've loved the steampunk genre and yet was oblivious to its existance until I (literally) stumbled upon the wiki article and started connecting to just about everything it said. I was actually a little amazed at some of the things that were listed as steampunk. For example, I never knew that H.G. Wells's works were concidered steampunk, although I can see how they are now. The War of the Worlds is, by far, my favorite book in the world.

My introduction to steam punk was with Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It wasn't set in Victorian times, but there was a definite steampunk air to it, with its giant airships and huge clunky guns. After that it was Final Fantasy and their airships. I first realized how much I love it when I saw Last Exile.
I suppose I love it so much because it combines history, especially the Victorian era (which I love) with the fantastical. I love fantasy and science fiction, and I love them more when they are placed out of their time (magic outside of medieval worlds, and advanced machinery outside of modern times). Not to mention top hats and waistcoats. There's nothing quite like a man in a top-hat and waistcoat...

I've liked steampunk since before I knew what steampunk ever was. I guess I have been attracted to that sort of era for as long as I can remember. When I was younger it was things like Disney's Atlantis, Treasure Island and any sort of thing about pirates, that kind of thing. As I got older I became greatly interested in the French 1750-1790's era. Marie Antoinette to be persist. Further along I came to find a absolute love of music that related to early goth, classical and mystic origins. Ergo Rasputina, Switchblade Symphony and Dresden Dolls. Around 8 months ago I discovered the actual subculture of steampunk and it has been a love affair ever since.

It's a process long in the works, but "Arcanum of steamworks and magic obscura" was the final drop, after that i became a total "steam-head"
