(1) Thou shalt not compare a parent genre with a child genre, but if those genres are closely realted that is okay (Hip-hop and Rap). Thou shalt compare a parent genre to a parent genre (Hip-hop and Metal).
(2) Thou shalt knowest a genre before trash talking it or thou will lookest dumb as s**t.
(3) Thou shalt not repeat shitty catch phrases that can easily be pistol whipped with logic.
(4) Thou shalt knowest the hypocrisies in thy chosen genre before pointing out ones in the opposing genre or thou will be burned.

Spicy Paprika I think Hip Hop isn't really an educational and meaning-full genre. I mean, Rock for example, it has much more understandable lyrics then Hip Hop and Rap and all that s**t.
Hip Hop is a bit too fast to understand what they're singing (or almost saying), and like someone here in this thread (don't know her name) said : all you can hear is 'Yo Yo Yo'. And i'm not being racist or something but if blank people are going R&B and Hip Hop kinda way, i'll have to laugh at the and say 'What The ******** my statement at Hip Hop. D:
Now Rock is much more understandable and has a meaning in their lyrics, like saying 'I Love You' in a large and long kinda way. I don't really have anything to say about Rock. It just doesn't suck and it doesn't have any repeatable lines (except for the chorus, but that's not the point now). It fits in the circle of teenagers, as how i call it. ;D You really shouldn't generalize like that. Sure a lot of mainstream hip-hop has gone to s**t, but to just flat out say that it isn't educational and meaningful is quite off. Most hip-hop songs aren't so fast that you can't understand what they're saying either.
And to say that all of rock has much more understanding and meaning is kinda of off too. Yes I agree some songs do have meaning, but a lot of songs are also about partying and anti-authority. Some heavy metal songs are outright vulgar lyric-wise and some of the more screaming songs you can't understand a thing that the singer is saying.
I like both genres of music (moreso rock because that's just the way I am) and I'm not very big on censorship myself. I mean, cuss words are only cuss words because someone decided to label them that way. But I guess for the kids you can try to censor some music, although I think it's pretty futile because kids are gonna find a way to get around it anyway. The only way you can get rid of the negative affacts of listening to people say "smack that b***h, kill that hoe," is to somehow gets artists to portray a more positive lifestyle.

Music shouldn't be censored, no matter what genre. Me, I love all genres, all music is awesome. I don't like to categorize music, though, for me it's more about the individual song.
Peace~

To be honest music is just a means of entertainment. The first music humans enjoyed had no lyrics. It was pleasing to the ears and could keep one occupied for half an hour.
In my opinion, if music entertains it has done its job well. Rap, is fun , energetic, and flowing. Occasionally there will be mature subjects such as hoes and bitches mentioned, but people love it all the more. There are many other genres and sub genres of music that mention explicit topics but Rap seems to be one of the few that get bashed for it. Sometimes I honestly wonder if it's really the music people have a problem with.
Whatever it is that you have against rap, it's just a preference. There are numerous rap artists who have written inspirational lyrics. You were probably too caught up listening to the more decorated songs about the "bitches and hoes" that you failed to look any further into the genre. If you can pull lame generalizations out of your behind and believe them you've missed out on so much.
Remember Guys - music is purely a source of entertainment.

I myself amnot a big fan of Hip hop, etc, but it should not be censored. If you get right down to it, it is freedom of speech. If you don't want to listen to it, don't listen to it. If you don't want your kids to listen to it, do something and don't allow them to have it, or monitor what they are listening to. I know, easier said then done smile

marshjazz The only music I have a problem with is Rap. It's just stupid. Period. My opinion and no one is going to change that. So don't argue with me here. I mostly listen to light rock, country, rock, 80's music, and pop. Not really much into metal, I've heard alittle bit and I don't much like it, but I don't have a problem with it. I think there should be a limit to the number of cus words (or words like the "n" word (don't get me started on the stupidity behind that word), hoe and all the other non-cuss bad words) allowed in a song. I don't think they should bleep it out because that ruins the song. Some of the music I listen too has some sort of profanity in it, but only once or twice in the song is profanity used. There is no reason why a song should be made up of nothing but profanity. Profanity doesn't help people express themselves it is just a way to make people what to buy their CD's. Kids always want what they can't have. You tell a kid that they can't have gum and they'll want it twice as much had you given it to them. Honestly using profanity just makes who ever is singing it sound ill-educated. While I am in no way against free speech it is riduclous to listen to a censored song and here "Beep beep beep the beep beep beep and all you beep beep beep" And just as bad to here it not bleeped. How someone enjoys that is beyond me. @ SushiJen It's not because people can't take profanity, it is because people don't want their children to end up like the retarded 13 year olds in my town, with no respect for their elders and cussing out their teachers and whatnot. Profanity is disrespectful. While the words are no different than any other word in our society, but because they are held as disrespectful it is shunned to use them. not all rap is bad, there are many rappers out there who are political and actually have a point in their music like: immortal technique, remo conscious, papoose, truth, dead prez. i no way am i trying to justify the negativity in rap, its just that...that is not the only genre. actually there are many, for example there is political/peace punk and then there is racist/skinhead punk. its not rap in general....its MUSIC in general.....almost every genre has a negative side to it because of the people that write it. therefore, you cant say all rap is bad when you havent personally heard every rap artist out there.

Well I think rock should be censored. Hip hop should just be thrown off the friggin planet D:<
RAP= Retards attempting poetry
Rap is so stupid, and pointless. And for those of you who think I am mean or something I am being realistic. Try doing hard math with hard core rap blasting from Ipods, ITS NOT EASY. And I have missed simple problems because I couldn't concentrate. I had to deal with that for a whole year and it made my grades a bit lower than they should have been. All Rap I hear either talks about sex or drugs and maybe some prostituion here and there. Or Slap butts or take off your shirt, to put it simple, just plain ickiness.

Did you even read the posts before you? confused And don't blame the music for making you mess up in school, if you can't concentrate with rap blasting, you can't concentrate with rock or almost any other genre of music. If that's the case, why didn't you complain to a teacher, or move?

The fact was people in that school didn't listen to rock, all of it was rap. And they BLAST it. Plus I am in college, I was doing my homework in my dorm. You can't tattle on people in your dorm room, the dean would think it was a stupid waste of his time. I asked them politlely to turn it down but It was so Loud they couldn't hear me. confused

Having a political point to rap music makes it any better? It isn't even mainstream. Meaning that isn't what I hear blasting from the car down the street. It isn't music in general, becaus classical music doesn't even have words. I can say, all rap I have heard is bad and that knowing my taste in music I wouldn't want to listen to some people talk really fast into a microphone and call it music. Anyway you look at it, like Naomi said: RAP = Retards Attepting Poetry.

Well either transfer, complain to the people over the dorms or try and get into a new room. If you were living in a house or apartment and had neighbors who did that, wouldn't you complain to your landlord or find something to do about it? Yeah, they're not right for doing it, but just sitting there and taking it and complaing ain't helping much either.

To be honest, both genres have much in common. Besides the different sound of music, both can be sending wrong messages, tell a story of a person, etc. I am often careful to what I listen to, so either one of the genres work with me 3nodding

Music is an art form. Therefore it shouldn't be censored. It would be taking a masterpiece of visual art and splashing white out on boobs and such because parents don't want kids to see the nipples. Adults are perfectly capable of switching a radio channel from a hip hop song, and if kids listen to it, the parents should be MORE than capable of turning it off or changing it. I'm not saying it's the parent's fault, hell, I'M a rebellious teen and my parents can't control every aspect of my life. ;D No one's ever happy with anything, I believe, because we don't live in the freaking Garden of Eden. It they censor rap, or rock, what next? Will they try finding problems with country, or reggae? Maybe, maybe not. People are generalizing rap and reggae, like taking the rock songs that say 'I'm gonna slit your throat' and the rap songs that say 'I'm gonna screw you, your friends, your mom, sister, etc.'. I personally don't like rap, but it's not ALL horrendous.
My point being, music is just another way to express yourself. People shouldn't be allowed to censor that.

I believe that hip-hop is losing some of it's flavor. The songs these days seem so stupid. Chicken noodle Soup for example, why the heck would you make a song about soup?! I agree that there is a little too much cursing and whatever in rap music. I'm 14, and I don't even really like all the rap that my friends like, I prefer rap from the 80's cuz it sure was heck of a lot cleaner and had more meaning to it.
Back then you could have an awesome rap song without a single curse word, or anything negative in it. Nowadays it seems like a rap song isn't good if it doesn't have any profanity or lyrics about sex and drugs in it.
