Mario.
Sure, Sonic has speed and youth compared to the pudgy plumber, but Mario has experience - lots of it. He's older than Sonic physically as well as chronologically. He's also appeared in far many more games than Sonic. He's not only rescued damsels in distress and freed entire kingdoms, but he's been a doctor, a kart-racer, a tennis player, a golf player, a referee, a construction worker, an archaeologist, a wrecking crewman, etc.
Mario also has a lot of moves, and not just jumps - he can punch, kick, flip, and butt-stomp; he can use items to fly, throw fireballs, throw hammers, turn to stone, or even become invincible. Oh, and unlike Sonic, he can swim.
Mario is a jack-of-all-trades. Sonic... not so much. I can see him kicking Mario's butt if he became Super Sonic, but that's a lot of Chaos Emeralds for that much trouble. Besides, Mario has a rather potent finishing move in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Brawl... twisted

I LOVE MARIO SOO MUCH ITS CRAZY. BUT I WUZ BORN BY SONIC AND I LIVE BY SONIC. SONIC IS THE SPEED OF LIFE. THAT BLUE HEDGEHOG IS AND WILL FOREVER BE MY VIDEOGAME GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like sonic better than Mario although I do play both. I like the original Sonic games best thogh, the ones I played on my Genisis so many years ago.
