OMG TO ALL YOU SAX PLAYERS: DO NOT USE RICO REEDS. NOT RICO, NOT RICO ROYAL, NOT RICO JAZZ. There is a reason that they are cheaper than all the other brands! They give you a thinner sound, and no playing strength whatsoever, nor do they train your tounge to become faster or stronger. I can not tell you how many sax players go playing with ricos for years before they audition for something and they dont make it because THEY USE A TERRIBLE REED AND HAVE BAD SOUND. If you switch reeds, it may be more difficult at first, but it will help you master your sound and you will sound better than ever before. I PROMISE.
And another thing, you should be moving up in reed thickness about 1/2 a size every year from the year that you start playing, or every 2 years. I have been playing for 6 years, and I play on Vandoren 3 1/2 or 4.

I don't know about you but I haven't ever had any trouble with Rico's..... except when their dead, but that doesn't count, because that goes for all reeds. Honestly I've been one of the better musicians in my band while playing on a Rico. Switching to Vandoren didn't change anything.

You actually studied reedmaking? eek That's pretty cool 3nodding
When my mother went to college, there was a girl in her dorm that made her own clarinet reeds...or tried to. She'd throw the ones that didn't work out into the hall, and if someone was walking by when she did that they'd get bashed in the head by flying wood xD Mother collected the reeds that were thrown out and made desk accessories out of them rofl She only has the pencil holder left, though...

The first thing I wanted to say is: That's hilarious.

I'd have to say, I really miss being in band. That was one of the best times of my life.
And reading this was great.
It was nice to get back into the spirit of woodwind a little bit.

The only reed I remember the name of that I've used is Rico. Not great reeds, but that's all my father would buy me. They worked though, I just had a bad habit of breaking them.
Hey, does anyone else do that?
Like, one time, we had a concert. I was going up the stairs behind one of my friends, and I accidently hit her in the leg with the clarinet. Broke the reed, but played with it anyway.

I play the oboe! I love it so much, even though reeds are a pain to pick out and dish out so much money for. I think I've finally learned what a good reed looks like and I've been playing for a couple of years.

Me too! This lady gave me a bad reed though, but it was her first day there I think =/. And they also gave me a clarinet cleaning swab and told me it was the same for an oboe, which i doubted, but I tried it and it doesn't go through the head joint D;

I've heard that you can use a turkey feather for a swab and it's supposed to be good... You need a silk swab for the oboe. I got a really cool tie-dye one as an early Christmas present for myself!

just wondering- what are the best reeds because i use a rico 2 1/2 and it work pretty well for me but some times it is hard to tune up because of my old hand-me-down sax that is over 30 years old! and how in the word do you make reeds? i have never heard of that!

The best reed...?

It's all up to the performer smile

But if you're looking for a higher-quality reed, try out a Vandoren Traditional. Ricos are great for tight budgets but every once in a while it's a good idea to spring for better quality.

Yeah, for me, I had to pay for my own reeds, so I got Ricos...
But some guy donated Vandoren reeds for the bass clarinets. mad

Malachipony: Lol, I use Rico 2 1/2 and the bari sax I use at school is over 25 years old. When my BD told me that, I started freaking out and obessively cleaning the mouthpiece. xp

I used to use Rico reeds for my bass clarinet, but then when i got a Vandoren reed i never went back to Ricos ever again. It made the sound so pretty, when before the rico reed would sometimes make the instrument squeak! -AAAAAH! MY EARS ARE BLEEDING!!!!! scream -

I play the oboe and no matter how hard I try they keep breaking! They annoy me so much since they are so expensive. What's worse? The music store is probably going to make it more expensive for me since their distibutors are having trouble manufacturing the reeds! scream That is why I call Central Music "Central Rip-off"

I play the Clarinet. I'm using 3 Rico Royal and a 2.5 Vandoren depending on the piece we're playing. I wish I could make my own reeds. Anyone know how I could learn? i was just recently taught how to check wether the reed is even worth using based on teh heart of the wood.

I make bassoon and oboe reeds (bassoon from blanks and oboe from cut cane and 'staples' - aka the cork and tube part). I also make reed cases from brass candy tins and Styrofoam or felt. I use brass because it doesn't rust with moisture like the Altoids tins do. Also, they have a looser seal that allows moisture to escape.

I learned oboe reed making from my mother and bassoon reed making from the contrabassoonist of the National Symphony Orchestra (US). I've had to make my bassoon reeds because I like super-resistant ones that just can't be bought. Even blanks are hard to find with enough cane left to get a good reed for me.

I generally recommend that anyone who buys bassoon reeds should at least learn how to change the wires properly and replace them with quality wire (because the silver colored stuff is crap). There is technique to that too though, so if anyone is interested, I'll post a how-to. Learning to tweak one's reeds is really important for anyone serious about music. Even single reeds can be tweaked to make them harder once they've been used too long by trimming the tip a little at a time (while keeping the appropriate curve) until it is strong enough to play again.

Another tip I have is that when reeds start to taste really bad or get moldy, they can be soaked in lemon juice - bassoon reeds go overnight because they're so thick but I don't know how long for other reeds. The acid kills the mold and bacteria without destroying the cane like mouthwash would.

Please post a how-to. $13 horrible reeds are too much. I now have a sore on my tounge because of them. Or is that supposed to happen when you first start?

has any1 ever played on a flavored reed???
My BD told me that they were bad for my sax but I'm still interested.
The only flavores i know about are spearmint and cinnimon.

For marching season I use Rico 3s, we're a pretty small band and I'm the strongest second and I like the power they help me produce. Also I got braces recently (I'm sixteen yes I know I'm late with the whole braces thing >< lol) and I constantly knock my mouth piece against my metal mouth ^^;. Costs a lot to keep wasting my Vandoren 3 1/5 on my metal mouth. I only use Mitchel Lurie's for my recitals but not for band.

That's going to happen when you first start on reed instruments, especially if you practice a lot. So good for you! ^^
