Serenity sighed as she followed Skye. "Where are we going?" she asked curiously. She tried to look through the grass to see what they were passing or where they might be, but she could see nothing.

Skye's wings fluttered with pleasure as she felt all of the vibrations around her. Each one was different, unique, and each one meant something else to her.
There was something further ahead. She didn't know what it was, but she knew there was something ... something fun. Something exciting. And she wanted to find it, find out what it was, and play with it.

Serenity sighed again. She obviously wasn't going to get any answers out of Skye, so why was she even bothering? After all, deaf was deaf, and unless Skye was paying close attention there was no way she was going to be able to talk to her or get any answers from her.
She only hoped that her sister wasn't getting both of them extremely lost.

Celebor reached the rose bush soon enough, and he jumped out of the grass hollering, "Gotcha!"
He stopped short when he saw that no one was there.
"Funny," he mused to himself, hooking one finger on his lip and looking around. "I know I saw them here ..." He saw the spot where they had ripped the grass out of the ground and nodded to himself.
"They musta gone this way!" he decided, and ran off into the grass once more.

Skye charged forward confidently, not in the least worried about getting lost. She didn't know exactly where she was going, but she never hesitated in her direction. Shew knew in which direction the thing was - whatever it was - and she was heading straight for it.

Serenity followed Skye as quickly as she could.
"Skye, where are we going?" she asked again with a sigh. She wasn't really expecting an answer, but she felt she might as well try. They didn't know the area at all, so how did Skye seem to know exactly where she was going? And where exactly was that?

Skye giggled and pointed straight ahead. "Something!" she said clearly to her sister. "Something Skye find!" She giggled again, her wings fluttering excitedly. "Something there!"
She adjusted her flowery crown and kept running.

Celebor blinked. Somehow, he had ended up back at the river, and the girls were nowhere in sight. He wondered if he had somehow gotten turned around or something, but when he turned to look for the rosebush again he saw that he had indeed gone in a straight line.
Which meant that he had gone in the wrong direction, and that the girls hadn't gone that way at all ...

Suddenly the tall grass ended, and the girls found themselves at the base of a large tree, an enormous old oak so big around that even a grownup wouldn't have been able to put their arms around it. The leaves were just budding, and both girls stopped in their tracks and stared up at it in awe.
But Skye's attention wasn't held by the tree for long. That wasn't the presence she had been sensing, but at the moment she was sensing it more strongly than ever. She looked around, wandering away from Serenity, circling the tree, following her feeling. On the far side of the tree was a little bird, a baby bird, just covered in soft down, its feathers not yet grown. It was bright gold, and Skye thought that it was very pretty. It was making funny movements, gulping with its mouth up in the air but not eating or drinking anything. Somehow, Skye got the feeling that there was something that it needed ...
She knelt beside it and picked it up gently, cupping it in her hands. She stroked its head with one thumb, smiling softly at it. It felt so soft ... She decided that she would take it home with her when Mommy came back. But how? She couldn't carry it all day ...

Serenity found herself suddenly alone, and she blinked. Where had Skye disappeared to?
She went around the tree until she found her sister kneeling with the baby bird in her hands. A slow smile crept across her face, and she moved to kneel beside her.
"Is that what you were looking for?" she asked Skye in a cheerful tone. She looked up above them. "I wonder where it came from - maybe it fell out of the tree or something. Is it okay?" She leaned close to take a good look at the bird.

Skye held the bird out to Serenity. "A'sat?" she asked, looking to her sister for the answer. She felt there was something wrong, that there was something that needed to be done for the creature ...

"A bird," Serenity answered, and then she repeated it slowly, exaggerating the sounds. "Biiiiirrrrr-duh!" She pointed up at the branches above them. "I think it must have fallen from its nest ..."

"Birrrrd," Skye repeated. She looked up, following Serenity's finger, and saw a nest in one of the lower branches of the tree. She stared up at it for several long minutes, thinking hard, examining it as well as she could from that distance. Then she held the bird out to her sister and said, "Hold pease!"

Serenity took the bird carefully and cupped it gently in her hands. "What are you going to do?" she asked Skye curiously, sitting on her bottom and leaning against the tree. "You're not going to disappear on me again, are you?"
She wasn't so sure that she wouldn't ...

Skye dusted her hands on her knees and did indeed disappear for a moment - she ran around the tree back to the grass once more and plucked out several handfuls of the long blades, then ran back to Serenity quickly.
She pointed up at the next. "Home," she smiled. "Bird home. Bird need home. Skye make bird home." And she settled in and started weaving the grass into a cross between a nest and a basket.
