Hasn't the Doctor Talked to Shakespeare a couple of times already? Yeah, I know with time travel, things in the past can still be to come, but still, the way the Doctor hangs around his favourites, I have a hard time believing this was their first encounter.
I was kind of sad that there weren't any MacBeth references in it sad

They're were references to Macbeth. Apart from the villains being three witches, Martha also mentioned to Shakespeare that he had written about witches... before the Doctor shushed her and said that Macbeth was written a long while after he wrote Love's Labours Lost.

But what I wouldn't give to see Tennant do some monologue from Macbeth! And doing his whole pretending to fake a Scottish accent thing...

Oh, and why is this episode the first time I've noticed how incredibly long his fingers are? When he's doing that telepathy mojo in the asylum... those are some scary-long fingers. And why does the Doctor sleep wearing his suit jacket?!

AND NO MORE AFFECTIONATE VILLAINS! At this rate, I think I'll be annoyed if, given that the Master does show-- didn't he used to refer to everyone as "my dear"? Because at this rate that would annoy me beyond reason. That Plasmavore was all, oh, you poor man, let me kill you so you can have some peace (and give us all a bit of peace and quiet). Stroking his neck and all that. And now this what-do-you-call-it getting all up in his face... I have never seen someone get their face that close to someone else's face without actually kissing.

But I loved the little crank-handle the TARDIS has. xd I love it.

the best part was the Venusian toothbrush. Such an obscure reference, and I'm a nerd for getting it, but I did a fan-girl happy dance none the less.

Excuse my ignorance, but could somebody explain it to me please?

Back in his third incarnation the Doctor used to have Venusian everything: he thwarted his enemies with Venusian Aikido and sent monsters to sleep with Venusian Lullabies. There was probably some other stuff too but my memory's not that sharp.

So when he pulled the Venusian spearmint toothbrush out of his pocket just before the bedroom scene it was a nice little nod to the past.

Hope that helps

"Bedroom scene"! xd I'm sorry, that just struck me as funny. Normally that's a euphemism... but, no, you've got a guy, a girl, and a bed, and they just sack out in the clothes they've worn all day and try not to elbow each other. One of those endearing-alien moments...

Did she actually even brush her teeth, though?

Vanille Chocolat

"Fifty-seven academics just punched the air."

I'm curious, does anybody know why fifty-seven? And don't all the little English Lit. students dutifully doing their research count? whee

I read somewhere that it was 57 because lots of academics are fairly sure Sonnet 57 was written for a man.

Don't ask me where, I really can't remember!

I really like this episode, and I didn't actually think the witches looked cheesy, and all the Harry Potter references, and, and, and...everything else.

Oh that's just awesome. It's things like that that make me wish I knew where to get my paws on some classic Who. A full series, rather that just odds and ends. ^^

... everyone else seemed to like it... er... I really didn't...
It was just the witches, and the voodoo dolls really, and they way they talked. And ah, I hated how it was the building and the words and ooh ah an energy converter... ... eh this episode just didn't do anything for me at all really. Most of the bits with shakespeare and everything were good, just everything to do with the witches and stuff, it was pretty horrible. I just didn't like them, not my kinda monster I guess.

... woah and this thread has disappeared onto the third page?? yes that's right, I went digging to find it and it has been dragged back to the surface for more discussion with everyone else who is now viewing 3nodding

Gotta say I hated it. I mean the Shakespeare lines the Doctor says are funny, but pretty predictable that he'd do that. I was surprised the Doctor was able to defeat the witches so quickly. And why would Queen Elizabeth I call the Doctor her mortal enemy if they havent' met? I mean it might be because when he met Queen Victoria said she hated him, but that was how many years in the future? Didn't make sense.

Could have been because of an event that occurred in the Doctor's future. Don't forget, time isn't a strict progression of cause to effect... but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff. Or something like that.

Indeed. xd

I enjoyed the many Shakespeare references, as well as the various other ones. Including Harry Potter. xd And I remember reading a review on that episode, and apparently he has alluded to meeting Shakespeare a few times before...

Apparently the Doctor isn't the only Harry Potter fan. rofl

The witches were annoying, although they were pretty affective with the freaky voodoo...and the mind reading.. o_0

I have to point out that when the witch-aliens mentioned the 'Naming', my mind immediately flew to Madeline L'Engle's 'Wrinkle in Time' series, where the main character has to Name the enemy (and other things) at one point, with a very strong reaction from the Named things. It's also how she ends up defeating the enemy. Great book series. Involves lots of time travel too. razz
Also, I think the main witch-alien (the one that looks human at times) looks like a cross between the daughter on the show 'Gilmore Girls' and the girl in the old Casper movie.. confused

Wrinkle in Time. Oooh, I read that book as a kid. I don't remember a damn thing about it except for 'tesseracts'. Tesseracts are cool, whatever they are...

I'm trying to remember how many different literary giants the Doctor has met (on-screen) so far. So far I can only think of Shakespeare, Dickens, and H.G. Wells.
