House Manager? Hm.
From reading these... it's really interesting to hear about the different ways that people in different schools run their tech program thing. For instance, at my school, techie are not to have anything to do with props. Our TD told us that props are the actor's responsibility and they can take care of it themselves. We on stage have too much to worry about.
But then we also don't have a building crew. Parents of people in the show build the sets for us. When asked, my TD simply replied, "I have no idea."
It also sounds like the different parts of tech (lighting, sound, stage ect) are very seperate from each other. Or something. We have problems with egos on my tech crew so the TD has to constantly give us the "Everyone on Tech Crew is important.. every job is equally as important as the others" speech, becuase for some reason the lighting girl doesn't think stage managers DO anything. Like hell we don't. We do more than she does... ok.. stop the ranting.
Anyway, in reply to the building muscle comment, another good way to work up biceps is to repeatedly riase and lower horribly weighted batons. Or main. Anyway, work ropes for a couple of shoes and you will see a change.

Hi, I'm new to the guild but am a hard core techie, so I thought here would be as good a place as any to start. I'm really into the lighting part of the theatre, I can run sound and everything else but perfer the lights. As far as set building goes, I am one of many girls who loves to be in there building, I think in intimidates some of our guys but thats ok....As far as lerning tech and the theatre program at my school goes, we have 3 differnt classes surrounding the department, a beg. acting, adv. acting and a stage craft class, most of the peeps who are in the department float between acting and tech work, but a few of us are hard core towards one side or the other. our tech program stuggles a bit, our class has a limit of 16 kids, but we're lucky if we have 10. It's a blast haveing such a small class, we all get to know eachother alot better, and it seems to make shows run better!!!

Like hell we don't. We do more than she does... ok.. stop the ranting. Yeah, lighting people are always either painfully shy or painfully egotistic. I should know, I'm one of them. At my school, the different parts of tech are very mixed up. We all get together a couple of weeks before the performance, and sort out who's doing what. For such a small school, we have a very large tech crew. We usually swap around, but I do mainly lighting. I also build sets, but I stay as far away from costume as possible. I get enough costume experience at my annual tech course. Why do I hate costume? Because some actors seem to lose 50% of their brain cells when faced with a simple piece of material. Does anyone else use headsets in school performances? We only have three headsets- four when our drama teacher fixes one- and it's a pain. One for me at the lighting desk, one for stage right, one for the stage manager at the back of the hall... and one the sound desk if there's spare. Stage left just has to suffer. Anyway, we just chat over ours, unles the show is really complicated. We also get spare actors/sound crew (our sound crew is people by little 'uns) to 'run' for us.

We use headsets for every show that has any sort of crew work....there is one for the SM and ASM, as well as the Lighting and sound crew. If we are running lights and sound for a band or chior concert we don't bother with headsets since there are only 2 people that works those and they are in the same room. For musicals the running/Flysystem crew also have headsets so that they can hear cues from the SM.

Yeah we definatly have headsets. We have some newer ones and some older ones. We also have a phone! Haha. The new ones are used in the booth, at the spot lights, and at the rope rail during little shows, but during school shows, the ropes and the stage managers get the old ones. I hate them.. so I'm never on headset. Anytime something goes wrong, one of the ropes guys says, "nikki, they want you on headset!"
We talk constantly about random stuff on headset, and during school shows we usually get in trouble. Espically when your phone makes quacking noises and you do that over headset. Haha.

Before we set up anything, we have to fix about half the lights.

We use nice headsets for our musical mostly because we rent a professional theatre (and it kills our budget). For our plays we use cheap walkie talkies which have headsets. Our theatre department is kind of weird because we don't have our own theatre/auditorium on the school campus so we always have to rent. It's nice though, getting to use a professional light system.

hey, I built a set today. Does that make me sort of a techie? My drama group does all of it. We make the sets, we make the costumes, we advertise, we perform, we practice... etc... We're like a big happy family.

Yeah kinda. Haha.
I did something sinful the other day...
We were putting together a few pieces of wood to hold up some glitter for this dacne recital... and I was screwing a screw into the wood.. and I go to move it.. and.. it didn't move.. I screwed it into the stage. Luckily.. manager/TD wasn't there.. so I took it out ... there was only a tiny hole.. and it was upstage.. so it's not like anyone would notice...
But apparently .. according to an egotisical lighting person.. i'm the only one who does stupid stuff on tech crew. hm... i beg to differ.

hey just thought i'd say good ev'en to you all, i'm an actor/director/costum/ set designer he he he he i'm a little of everything, i love to direct cos it means i get to be part of everything...just to let all you people at mixed schools know how lucky you all are...we have to peform our plays allll girls cos our brother school isn't allowed to help us. I love lighting he he he that's the one thing my crappy school does have and that is an excallent lighting rig i love to but gobos(sp) in there it's so much fun being up the ladder..he he he our supervising tech is really cool he lets us put explosions EVERYWHERE!!! he he he he it was funny last term when i "accidently" singed Mary poppins eyebrows durring a rehearsal....what? she was too close to the pack...it was here own fault for not listening...anyway it's nice to be able to get all tech and not have to worry about being alone!! xd

We have 6 Techies in the P.A program at my school. And only two of us are Jouniors. Next year we expect probably 4 more Techies while the rest will probably go to Acting or Dancing.
No one really likes us to much (Not us, just Tech work.) They don't understand all the stuff we do for them, and when asked to help, they won't.
::has a small actor dissliking for the actors at her school::
