Atop the horse, Laura felt nervous as they passed through the city. She'd never presented herself in such a way before; only nobles made themselves known by traveling astride their beasts. Not only that, but she was glad she'd tied back her short hair; what most women would feel was an insult to their pride having it so short. Just long enough to be tied at the nape of her neck.
If anyone who gave her a passing glance would consider her, it would be apparent she looked to be a lad not quite yet a man who was unable to grow a whisker on his chin. Despite the fact she was already at a marriable age of twenty. "Pity there's no ducks this time of year." The femininity of her voice seemed like it died in her throat. As a thespian in costume, she seemed far more interested in keeping up the ruse when in public. After all, Laura'd been doing it for years; it was out of habit by now.~*~*~ Leolin nuzzled her, cooing quietly when she spoke. "I'm glad you're safe..." He said quietly. "If you hadn't... I-I don't know what I'd have done. You're my only friend beside my partner, and you know humans can't talk sense!"

"No ducks, but I've seen some wild turkeys about. Either that or someone lost them, at least, but they don't look like domestic birds." Nyhali was riding ahead of "Lucas", at least Laura seemed to be playing the part now that they were out in public, so Nyhali was willing to play along.
They had to pass along the outskirts of an open-market area, and there were several hungry children lining one wall. They looked hungry anyway. Xuan being the large city it was, it had its share of poverty, and not all of the unfortunate impoverished souls stayed in the "rundown" part of the city. Like these children, getting as close to the "rich" part of town as they dared, hoping that maybe someone would part with a few coppers.
She slowed her horse and looked back. "Shall we treat the kids, Lucas?" Several young faces looked up, startled and hopeful.
Kedri fluffed up again, feeling both flattered and slightly annoyed. "I'm glad I could be safe and be here for you Leolin... but... did you ever stop last night to think about how I'd feel if I lost you? Or your human for that matter?" She settled and preened at his wing. "Ah... no use worrying over it now, it's over and we're all alive. Past is past and hopefully it won't repeat itself..."

Haulting her horse along side Nyhali's, Laura looked to the little street urchins. Had she not had the luxury of Leolin's company, she doubted how much better off she would be than those children. Dismounting from the horse, Laura looked to Nyhali calmly. "So long as they don't ask for horsey rides." She murmured with a small smile, looking to the children and starting towards them with the gelding in tow. Getting off the street, she knelt down to try not to frighten them, gesturing them to come closer. "It's all right, you don't need to be afraid."
Leolin whined quietly, laying his head on one of her talons and lifted his wing to allow her to preen better. "All right..." He still didn't regret protecting her. Glancing around, Leolin chirped as he lifted his head. "Where... where did my partner go?" He stood quickly, looking franticly for Laura, despite the popping in his bones for the sudden movement.

Nyhali imitated Laura's actions. The children noticably relaxed when both of the woman had dismounted, but were still wary. "Don't worry, little ones... No one wants to hurt you. Would you all like something to eat, maybe?"
The older kids stood back, wary, but one of the littler ones; probably the youngest, actually; ran up and threw her grubby little arms around the kneeling Nyhali's neck. "Canny appa?"
Nyhali could only grin. "Sure... we can get you a candy apple." The little girl squeeled in delight and hugged her even harder. Nyhali disengaged the little one's arms and stood, offering a hand which was immediately cluched by a grubbly little child hand and walked her over to the newly opened stalls. She got the promised candy apple, and also some meat on a stick. It was exactly a balanced meal, but it was probably the best she'd eaten in a while.
She returned with the little one and dropped the child's hand to give her the candy apple since she'd almost devoured the meat already. The other children, upon seeing that she would indeed get them something and that she didn't seem to be trying to keep the child against her will slowly came around.
Most of them ended up getting just about the same thing, and Nyhali waited around until they'd all eaten before giving them each a couple of coppers to put away or spend as they saw fit. They might end up losing the coppers, but at least she'd seen to it that they actually got to eat their food without someone else trying to take it.
Kedri kept preening his wing. "Nyhali took her out. They were on horses. Nyhali had her bow, they probably went to hunt something for us." She still kept preening, cooing soothingly as she did so. "Don't worry. You saw before, Nyhali's a fighter, she'll be safe. She's never lost a fight. May not exactly have won them all, but she's never really lost." She nibbled at the tip of his ear. "And the horses are very fast."
A moment passed and then suddenly Kedri blurted out, nares turning slightly red, "Do you want to stay here with me? Until you're better, I mean..."

Laura stood up when she saw Nyhali looking after the littlest ones, however, when one of the boys had his meat stolen by a dog, Laura turned to see what the commotion was.
The dog, spotlessly clean dalmation, wore a scarlet collar around it's neck with an insignia embelished on the polished metal tag. Instead of chasing the dog away, Laura paled slightly, almost seeming to hide behind her horse. "Oh no...."
The dog was a Lord's pet obviously, a carriage hound whose owner was just down the street. The decorations on the carriage displayed it belonged to a lesser Lord, a knight in fact; one Laura happened to know. Unfortunately, that wasn't what worried her.
The reason for hiding was, irritatingly enough, her sister married to the newly knighted man. The same who was just now exiting the coach, who caught sight of the pair- despite Laura's best efforts to hide.
"Oh! Oh, Tomas, look!"
The girlish squeal she gave- unlike anything that would come out of the younger sister- was giddy and bright. Almost loud enough to be heard by the pair down the road. Clutching the hem of her dress, the knight could not keep his wife from crossing the street to see the two women; completely ignoring the young beggars.
"Luke, what're you doing hiding behind that horse? You're not causing trouble again are you? Where's Leolin?"
Questions were shot in rapidfire, twittering like a song bird. At least she knew what would happen to Laura if she revealed the woman for what she was on the street.
~*~*~*~
With her continued support, Leolin sank back to laying down beside the other griffin. At the question, Leolin blushed as well as he was taken aback. "I-I certainly can't race like this." He said, attempting to joke, offering a smile. "I would like to stay... My partner has other humans to talk to, it-it might do her some good to play with them." He hoped to convince himself of this, though he obviously was concern for leaving Laura alone. He would sorely miss her absence, but nuzzled Kedri gently. It would be nice to get to know the lady griffin better....

Nyhali raised an eyebrow. "Luke" was it? Judging by the resemblance these two were related, and judging by the age... Laura's sister. "He's with my Kedri, back at my home. We were going to go catch them something for lunch and thought perhaps the kids might like something to eat too. I think Lucas was just a bit startled to see you."
Nyhali gave a small bow and extended her hand, hoping perhaps that her short explanation had given Laura a moment to recover. "I am Nyhali Mrndraebon of House Heideshi. Lucas and I are recent acquaintances." Explanations could wait for a less public venue.
Kedri chirped and blushed again. "Laura and Nyhali both could probably use more human friends. And I'm sure Nyhali will make sure Laura can come visit you whenever... and after you're better we can visit any time! And maybe I can see what your training is all about." She knew he wouldn't like being separated from Laura but... well... he was her new friend, and he was still hurt. She just wasn't quite ready to let him go...

"Oh, well how do you do?" The woman cheerfully shook hands, almost delicately. Her build was slim and graceful, unlike Laura's slightly muscular build despite her petite frame. A tad taller than her sibling, with dark almond hair that came in waves over her shoulders. "I hope Luke here hasn't been bothering you?" She gave Laura a patronizing smile, as if thinking it adorable how she continued the ruse.
Laura, however, strained every mental fiber of her being to keep from glaring at her sibling. "Nyhali, this is my sister Emily." She said with a vague gesture; her heart definately not in it. "Don't take anything she says seriously."
"That's a little harsh!" Looking openly offended, Emily looked back to her husband near the carriage and waved him along. He needed to see a smithy about knightly attire and the state of his sword... Not that Emily much liked the thought of her husband going off to fight anywhere. "When did you come to the city, Luke? I would have thought you'd be staying at home to look after Leolin..."
"I'm employed here in the city, dear sister. Aren't you busy? I think the both of us should be going our seperate ways..." Laura hoped to send her sister off as politely as she could muster; there was nothing more irritating than listening to her sister's twittering for a long period of time.
"Nonsense! I'd like to hear all about you and your little friend!" Emily brightened, looking to Nyhali. Hardly detered, she seemed more incline to pry now that Laura wanted her to go. "Kedri's another griffin then, I assume? That's a lovely name for a bird."
Leolin gave a quiet chuckle, preening Kedri's neck delicately. "Red really suits you." He cooed in her ear, though was red-faced as well with saying such a thing. Kedri wasn't the only one with funny warm feelings washing over them.

"Ah, well... I suppose we can spare a few minutes, but we really can't wait too long. If we're gone too long the griffons will get anxious, and anxious griffons aren't pleasant, generally speaking. Not that Kedri gets violent, but... well, the staff doesn't really like being knocked down and having to pick things up after she's gone looking for me. And she might preen herself and Leolin to baldness, and I don't think he'd like that much either." Hopefully Emily would be accomodating when she decided they needed to go. If not, she'd put her foot down, but hopefully she wouldn't be forced to offend Laura's sister. And this way she got to satisfy a bit of her curiosity about Laura's family, Emily got to know a bit about what Laura was up to so maybe she'd leave Laura be for a while, and Laura wouldn't have to put up with her sister for too long.
"Here puppy-puppy, leave the kids alone." She cooed at the dalmation and held her hand out, palm down, to try and coax it away from the children. It didn't seem inclined to hurt them, but they were obviously frightened to varying degrees. They probably got chased by dogs more often than not.
"There's a nice inn around the corner, I go eat breakfast there sometimes. It's a bit after, but still, I don't think the innkeep will mind. And it's better than standing around in the street."
Kedri fluffed and preened reflexifely at her scarlet feathers after the compliment. "I like your colors, too..." She fumbled for a moment and then put a wing over him again. "Hmm... red doesn't look too bad on you, either!" She chuckled and stretched, enjoying the mid-morning sun.

Laura was about to get back on her horse when her sibling hugged her around the neck. Looking obviously irritated, Laura said nothing until Emily pulled away; kissing her on the forehead in doing so.
"All right, get goin'!" Laura said a bit more loudly than she intended to.
Sighing deeply at her sister's sharp attitude, Emily gave a small curtsy to the pair of them before whistling for her dog. "I'm sorry for holding you up. Perhaps I'll see you at that Inn then, Nyhali? I'll have to introduce you to my husband as well." She waved them off, returning to the carriage she'd left from.
The dog, a playful sort of pooch, released the meat to bou over to Nyhali. Barking loudly, it licked at her hand and face before Emily whistled for him. Watching as she started off, the dog got in one more good 'kiss' before barking as it darted off after the Lady.
Frowning in irritation, Laura mounted onto her horse and looked to the children. "You lot should be getting to your parents." She murmured, wanting to get well away from anywhere her sister might be.
Leolin's face only got redder, and he lay on his side with his head resting on Kedri's talons. "I didn't mean your feathers." He said with a smile, looking to her fondly. "You really are pretty Kedri. I hope I can stay longer. Just watching you makes me happy." He closed his eyes, almost purring as he lay with his head on her claws.

Nyhali watched the woman leave, got kissed by the dog, blinked, frowned slightly in confusion, got back on the mare, blinked again, then shook her head and chuckled, smiling. "Well... that's a bit of a load off, there, " she said quietly to Laura. "I didn't honestly think she'd let us get away that easily. It was probably what I said about Kedri."
She waved goodbye to the children and started off again, triple checking to make sure her coin-purse and other small valuables were intact. She wanted to trust the children, really she did, but on the streets of a bid city she just couldn't allow herself the luxury. Everything seemed intact though. They were usually less inclined to steal from those that gave willingly. That wasn't necessarily true with the adults, alas, but what could you do? "Shall we be off then, Lucas?"
Not her feathers? ...Oh. Ooooh my. Kedri blushed when she realized what he'd been talking about, and blushed further when he rested his head on her foreclaw. He looked comfortable though, and she... really didn't want him to move. So she preened the feathers on the back of his neck and then lay her own head down next to his. Not too close... but closer than she would have with anyone else but Nyhali. "You can come anytime, Leolin... even after you're better..." She folded her wings up and blew a contented sigh out through her nostrils. "I'd like that."

"Methinks it might have been better if she'd held us up." Sighing deeply, Laura looked to Nyhali almost sadly. "She's going to hold you to what you mentioned about a nice tavern to eat at... The woman loves gossip, and her reclusive younger sibling is one of her favorite topics."
She supposed it ment her sister was happy, but Laura was not pleased with being the entertainment for her older sister's amusement. "Tomas doesn't get a word in edge-wise around her, but she does make him happy. Poor sod... I wouldn't want to be married to someone like my sister."
"So would I." His wing stretched, brushing Kedri with his flight feathers softly, almost delicately. Leolin looked contented, smiling warmly when he opened his eyes to see Kedri blushing all the more. "Maybe when we're both healed up, we should go flying together?" He asked hopefully, edging his head closer as he folded his wing. Still laying on his side to collect the most of the sun's rays. His tan, lackluster feathers seemed to have a bit more gloss in the sun. At the very least, his faint brindle seemed all the brighter in the sun.

Nyhali smiled ruefully. "Ah... I'm used to dealing with gossips, Luke. Unfortunately they seem to abound in the social circles I'm expected to deal in here." She didn't realize she'd used the shorter name, so she added, "Can I call you Luke?"
They reached the edge of the city and she informed the guards of their business outside and that they were going to be back sometime later. This was one of the more heavily trafficked gates, so they actually made note of it and told them to be back before dark. Nyhali led the way to the spot where she usually went when she wanted to hunt something on her own. After a little while she spoke. "Do you usually train Leolin at Remiel's home or somewhere else?" If she wanted to try and get Kedri into some form of training it might do well to see the place it would happen if they had time enough.
Kedri, head still on the ground next to Leolin's, half-closed her eyes drowzily. "I like your colors, Leolin... they're subtle, they suit you." She seemed about ready to go back to sleep between her current relaxation, the large meal, and the lingering fatigue of the night before.

The corners of her mouth turned downward slightly at hearing her sister's cutesy nickname for her, though shook her head. "Doesn't bother me." She murmured calmly, and didn't really mind; at least Nyhali wasn't doing it to be annoying as her sister did.
As they passed the guards, Laura bowed her head and tried not to be seen. Though Nyhali's clothes made her look important, she hardly looked more than an important servant as she left with the woman. It was only once they were behind did she answer, not one to take much stock in the guards of the city; certainly not trusting them for reasons her own.
"Leolin wears a rope harness with bags tied to it. Doesn't matter where we train, so long as there's room for him to run and fly, I can weight the bags to give him a decent work-out." She said calmly. "It's hardly.... professional. Nothing I ever use has been bought just for training; I haven't the coin for such expensive things."
Leolin blushed at the compliment, and stroked her beak gently with his own, thrumming deep in his throat as he did so. "I'm glad they were enough to catch your eye." He said modestly, looking Kedri in the eyes when he lay his head down once more. "Are you sure you wouldn't rather have another griffin here with you like Aeron?" He did look worried; the large fellow from the party was much brighter in color, and certainly had more pretty words to say than Leolin did.

Nyhali chuckled. "Your method is probably more effective. You can literally train him under any conditions... and not really have to worry about your equipment. Though... if you wanted, we could get a leather harness fitted for him that you could tie the bags to. Rope tends to rub feathers ragged and snag on them, though I'm sure you're as careful as you can be to make sure it doesn't actually rub any skin raw or anything. Actually you take better care of Leolin than my brothers do of their griffons, from what I can tell." She paused to check their direction before continuing both with forward motion and with speaking. "Not that you have to, or anything, but the offer is on the table if you ever want to accept. So anyway... what sort of exercises do you have him do?"
Kedri fluffed slightly at the mention of Aeron in a manner of mild discomfort. "He was nice enough, but... I guess he's a bit too wild for me. You probably don't hear things like this often, but I like your build better, and well... your little white stripes are adorable." She was looking off into space, finding it difficult to actually look at Leolin while saying these things without stuttering. "And... you're honest. He may have had pretty words, but they were just flattery. I know his type, and he would have said them to any female who showed interest in him..."
~~~~~
Sometime that afternoon after hunting down some rabbits and a couple of lucky (or perhaps unlucky?) quail, Nyhali led the way back inside the gate to the Heideshi grounds. The griffons had apparently been sunning and gotten sleepy, for they were curled up in one large ball of feathers and fluff. "Now that... is just adorable," she murmured softly to Laura, tone more than a little bemused.
Chuckling softly at the sight of the pair, Laura smiled fondly at Leolin and Kedri in the sun. "At least they stayed out of trouble..." She murmured, looking back at Nyhali. "I'll have to go home tomorrow, Leolin looks contented to stay with his lady friend rather than go home with me."
She led her horse towards the stables, hopping off and beginning to remove it's tack; all the while, trying to be as quiet as possible to keep from waking the griffins.
In his sleep, Leolin gave a squeaky sort of snore as air whistled through his nostrils. He shifted, lifting his head to scratch an itch just under his wing before laying down once more with his head on Kedri's neck- not even fully awake while moving. Within a few moments, the griffin's legs began to move: he was dreaming of running, perhaps racing. Of course, it was more comical than anything else, and with his back to Kedri's side, she was out of the way to keep from getting kicked by accident.
