I would have to watch it... But I'm certainly pissed at ALW. I think he's just bitter that he resembles 1920s Erik. D<

Kira the wanderer What's been bothering me the most lately, is that he acts as though he CREATED the story-- as though he personally invented The Phantom of the Opera-- and it all came into existance starting with the play. That's actually quite true. I remember watching the making of phantom and in a brief interview with Webber he mentions that HE created the idea of the phantom's "Don Juan". This confused me becuase I was quite sure that Leroux had the phantom write "Don Juan". Apparantly Webber had forgotten this minor detail.
Hmm...verbal plagiarism.

Hmm...verbal plagiarism. He did. The Opera was mentioned a few times throughout the book and when Christine unmasks him, Erik even screams that he is a "sort of Don Juan."

Hmm...verbal plagiarism. His ego neeeds to be popped. Unfortunately, I believe it will be done so by the means of destroying the Phantom along with it. Let him go make a sequel to Cats-- at least he made that one all by himself.

The only song that was actually written for the musical was "Memory." The rest was in a book of poems by T.S. Elliot. Whoever said that ALW's ego needs to be popped made me imagine him as a pimple. Or a balloon.

It seems Webber just takes other people's ideas to gain success. Oh boy...

None of Webber's ideas are original. If you conjure up all his musicals, I bet they're based off of something else or some petty remake of another.

If we could combine all his plagerisitic acts into one, it would be one sucky musical, I mean after all, it is all stuff created by other people. (sorry if this was random, but I felt a need to say it.)

People act like Webber's musical is the very foundation of phandom. neutral What about the Yestin/Kopit Musical? Or even Ken Hill's, which came before Webber's and was his inspiration?

I suppose those weren't as well done. I never saw them myself, but they couldn't have caught on as well if they weren't as good. Just a penny for your thought. Or maybe his own fame.

Actually Ken Hill's was very successful, but it never spanned to America like Webber's did. Hill's success is what got Webber to do his own. As for the Yeston/Kopit, it's more obscure here since, again, it didn't go past Europe as Webber's did. The only reason Webber's musical is more spread-over is because he had several successful musicals under his belt beforehand and was praised for Cats that was made only a few years prior to PotO.

I stand by the opinion that the Rosen/Schierhorn version was exceptional. That is a small-scale production, and considering ALW's previous successes, he has much more appeal to the casual observer than a small, practically independent production.
