Tommy couldn't have felt lower if Gaius had come up and kicked him in the crotch with a hoof. He felt like that too. It was all he could do not to just walk away right then. Instead, he compromised with 'standing,' using his fists as crutches and his head hung low. She hates me now...great...well, she should. That was stupid of me...let people live in their ignorance for as long as they can...at least get some happiness here. Christ, I'm an idiot.

With a sigh, he turns toward the lights illuminating the village a little ways off. He seriously contemplates just drowning himself in a movie for the rest of the night. His escape from reality...his own personal cave.

The woman watches him, already regretting her outburst. With a sigh, she reaches in the bag and fetches a large clam who still has its siphon protruding. "Tommy...? Hey? Hey, flyboy..." As soon as he shows signs of looking back at her, she grins and squeezes the clam's meaty tube. A small jet of salt-water arcs straight at him.

"N-no hard feelings, honest."

Tommy didn't know what to think at the moment...Should he stay and try to patch it up, or just leave and hope never to run into her again. On an island...you're a bright one, aren't you, Tommy? Before he could make up his mind though, she did it for him. He glanced back at the flyboy remark. In all honesty, he liked the nickname...better than bat-man, that's for damn sure. He had to hold back a smirk though...that is until a stream of salt-water hits him right in his face. His unbalanced body fell back and he landed on his rump. And he couldn't help but laughing...even if it caused him to snort some of that salt water up into his leaf-like nose. "Ah, Christ!" he coughed out while still laughing, trying to wipe his large nose with the back of a wing.

"That's how you treat everyone you meet?" he asked, still grinning despite his sour mood only moments before, "By squirting clam juice all over 'em?" He chuckles a few more times before frowning, "Hey...how'd you do that, anyway?"

"Naw... It just seemed like a good idea at the time, sorry." Dee gives a little chuckle. "Some of these clams are like little water pistols... the siphon is their intake... and if you grab 'em just right, a few will eject the salt water they've got in their body." She heaves a cough. "Well, it's water and a bit of waste products... but you know. Everybody poops."

Tommy crossed his oddly shaped legs in front of him and leaned back. His fingers spread out to either side of him on the sand like the skeleton of the wings they will soon become. He grinned at her, remembering a book he read as a kid with that same name. "Heh, don't worry 'bout that. I never depooped crawfish when I ate 'em, either."

"...are...are you going to be alright, though?" he asked with genuine concern.

Dee shrugs and re-bags the clam as her smile fades. "Well...yeah, I suppose. As well as one *can* be in this sort of circumstance. I've got nice folks around...a roof over my head... and a tropical island to explore. That's nothing to sneeze at."

She takes off her mask, which seems to be fogging a bit, and spits in it. While rubbing the saliva around she keeps talking. "I'll...do my best, whatever happens. It's not like I'm going to do myself in. As inhumane as this place may be--from an ethical standpoint--it's also horribly interesting."

The light is already too low for her to see much underwater... Dee gripes to herself about starting a bit earlier tomorrow...

Tommy nodded, knowing what she meant by that. Hell, Moreau was a great man...a horrible, soulless individual, but still a great man. He blinked toward the faint, colorful light where the sun used to be and sighed with relief. He rubbed his eyes with the palm of his hand/wing.

"Yeah, I hear ya...but...if, yaknow...you ever need someone to hang out with...don't hesitate to call up your friendly neighborhood batman...I'm in duplex fifty-four."

Dee nods sagely as she waddles through the sandy shallows back to shore. "Batman is probably one of the greatest superheroes of our time." She bends over, removes her fins, and fixes him with a grateful half-smile as she flips them over her shoulder. "And thanks, Tommy. I'm in number 29. If you ever need to borrow an obscure bird guide or feel like a drink of wine, stop in."

Tommy couldn't help but blush slightly at the batman comment. He grinned widely. He couldn't agree more with Dee. Batman was always his favorite. And in about a month...he'll be finished and be the real-life bat-man. He was terrified and elated at the thought.

"I'm sure you've got your work cut out for you in a place like this...but wine? That actually...that actually sounds really nice. I'm going to have to take you up on that sometime soon."

Tch... he seems like such a nice guy. Why are all the sweethearts either gay, taken, and/or being used as human guinea pigs?

"Great! And I'll try and post a notice when I've collected enough grub for a good cookout. Meanwhile, this all gets tossed in the freezer if the cafe lady lets me borrow some space." Dee is already scheming. "I'll keep some raw for the likes of Billy..and I'm sure I could figure out something for you, too."

She slips on her sandals and gets ready to trudge back up to the village. As her skin dries, the itching on her shoulder and in her sinuses becomes less intense, but she doesn't give it a second thought.

"Try to have a great night, okay? It was very nice to meet you."

"That'd be great, I'll be lookin' foreward to it," he said with a nod, the cool sand relaxing him now that the sun had gone down. "She seemed like a nice a nice enough person...for a lab tech, anyway. I'm sure she won't mind...but yeah, lemme know. I only have one choice in my meals...something new'd be amazing."

He lifted an extremely large hand toward her as she trudged off. "I'll do my best...but yeah, it's been great meeting you, too," a smile spread on his face as he said this.

"I'll try to do my best! Take care," Dee twists around to return the wave with a smile, then continues up towards the nearest trail.

Awwwshoot! She chides herself not long thereafter. I should've asked him if he had any echolocation abilities... or heat-sensing... or how his sense of smell was altered... Sigh! And so it goes all the way back to her duplex; with her ravenously-curious brain demanding that a good long journal entry be written about this encounter, including all wildlife sightings and footnotes detailing suspected adaptations and mutations in the altered human physiology of a bat-hominid.

...

Crazy brain.
