He swallowed a few times, trying to moisten the tender roof of his mouth with his sticky tongue before managing to speak. "I.... I w-woo-was... n-near my sw-sw-swamp..." He managed uneasily. There, good, just like Nita, just like Tommy. His eyes twitched over her expression, drinking in the delight she seemed to get from his gift. He knew it! He knew this had been the right decision! He had to have done something, and this was the best he could do. "Um... and... ah..." Just say it. He had grown comfortable with his eating habits until the incident with the bird feeders. Every meal left him feeling guilty, and this instance had been no exception.

At his latest bout of stammering, Dee glances up. She's still squinting, but it's not accusingly. "You....you didn't eat them, did you?" Absently, the naturalist scratches at her injection site.
Oh, Dee. Look at that expression. The hair on the back of her neck itches and prickles, standing on end. What do *you* think?
"You did eat them," she says with a slouch and a very weak grin.

The frog twisted his fingers together, throat trembling guiltily as he took a hobbling step backward, "I... I... I... I. d-duh... I krrrIIIT! I m-mean... I... er... th-that is... I j-j-juh-just... KRrrIIIT! I d-d-didn't m-mean... I... KrrIIT! I h-had... hadn't kn-known... m-meant... I m-mean..!" Oh HELL oh hell oh hell oh BLAST oh DAMN she probably HATED him, the dirty horrible bird murdering monster swamp creature- He took her squint as a look of distaste, his stomach doing flip-flops as he suddenly fell back down to his more comfortable crouch, readying himself to spring away in shame.

"Shhhh, shh! Newt, calm down," she quickly replies, face relaxing even though it prompted her eyes to start watering again. "I know what you're saying, and I know you were just hungry. I only asked you not to eat birds from my feeders, I didn't say you could NEVER eat birds." She reaches out towards him. "C'mere, I'm sorry if I scared you. I'm just having a really bad morning."
As she extends her arm, Dee thinks she sees a strange mark on her skin... when she tries to focus on it, it's gone. I need to get some fluids down. I'm seeing things.

"I'm... I'm s-sor-sor-sorry! I j-just... I ah... I th-thought... th-thought you'd... y-you know.. l-like them, s-since they'd j-just.... er... p-probably get eaten if I had left th-them krrIIIT! Ah... ahem, and I've b-been keeping them as wa-wa-warm as I c-can in my mouth s-since I f-found them and... and..." He was fairly hungry as a result. The last thing he had eaten had been the eggs' large, fat, pigeon of a mother. Thankfully, it had been a good sized meal by his standards. As he explained himself, legs trembling as he worked to keep himself upright and thinking clearly he finally managed to take in the pained look on her face. He cocked his head, looking at her with one eye and then the other as his throat trembled thoughtfully. "Are... are y-you alright? I've... I've b-been wor-wor-worried."

"I think so. It's just a result of the heat and me not taking in enough water to counter the booze. You don't have to worry about ol' Dee."
She's a bad liar.
With a painful grunt, Dee pulls herself to her feet. Her bright red lips are pursed as a thought crosses her mind. "You know, we should take these in and put them under a light, in case they're still viable." Yes, Dee. Closer to the bed in case you keel over. "Maybe we can hatch them. Come on in..."

"Ah... ah y-yes!" from his experience with hangovers, it seemed to explain everything. The frog gave a few stumbling, hopping steps after her. It was odd going into a duplex again... it had been ages since he had properly gone indoors, and he wasn't sure what he thought about it. "I... I hope they're.... alright, I w-w-was.. er... t-tried to be... KrrIIIT um... y-you know, very careful!"

Dee takes a seat at her desk and gently places the nest in front of her. "Pull up that other chair if you'd like," she mumbles at Newt as she turns on the goose-neck style reading lamp. "Let's get a better look at these."
Clean white, no markings, sturdy but messy-looking nest... hmm... fairly large bird....
"I don't suppose you recognized the species of the, eh, mother? Just general ballpark type would help." Dee picks up each egg one at a time, gingerly turning them around in her slender fingertips and holding them close to the lightbulb. It was hard to concentrate through her blurring vision and the aching joints, but she could see what she was looking for.
"Two of them are fertile, Newt. Look." Sure enough, at just the right angle there was a small web of blood vessels visible just inside the ivory shell. "This trick is called 'candling.' Unfortunately..." she picks up the third egg. "This one didn't survive."
Upon said ovum there was a hairline fracture and a small, if steady, leak of fluid.

"It... it.... l-looked a b-bit like... l-like a p-puh-pigeon," He answered, wide mouth arching down in a miserable frown. He had tried to be careful! It was difficult to not feel guilty, but he was beginning to calm down, regardless. He clumsily managed to pull up the other chair, sitting in it with as much human posture as he could muster as he watched her and the eggs thoughtfully. "S-so... so... m-m-mm-maybe we could... s-save the t-two at least?"

Dee's expression softens. "Well, we'll try. They're the only ones we *could* save. The broken one is infertile. Nothing in it that can grow." She looks over and pats Newt gently on his slick shoulder. "There's nothing *to* save in that one. You can eat it if you'd like...probably'd be a healthy snack."
At the thought of food, her stomach twisted, but she smiled nonetheless.

His wide mouth twisted into a froggish smile as he lifted his legs up to crouch on the seat. "Y-you... you can save them, though? TH-those two?" It didn't take long for her to offer him the egg before his tongue leaped out to snatch it from the nest with a egg shell crunch.

Dee nodded, looking drowsy but pleased. "I'll do my best. I've seen this work on quail and chicken eggs, but haven't tried it with pigeon." She gently slides two thick books under the nest, lifting it up closer to the light, then up-ends two more heavy books around it, trying to corral the heat in.
"That's the best I can do for now. I'll try to find some foil to help conduct better, as well as a thermometer." She leans over and kisses the top of Newt's head. "Thank you, hon. Really."

"KrrKITKrrrKITkrrrKIT!" He hammered out, throat sacks inflating as they often did when she got this close. "Ah... I.. I... I... I w-wanted... wan-wan-wanted to... to krrIIT Bring... bring you... y-you a krrrKIT p-present you know? F-for... for... as a... a krrrrKIT th-th-thank you for... y-you know..." He shifted, smiling bashfully at the touch.

Dee flinches as Newt hammers out those potent calls. Her head aches and she has to lean away a bit, bringing up a hand and clasping it over her forehead. "Uh, n-no problem, babe. Really, it was my pleasure." She looks embarrassed at her outward sensitivity and responds with a shaky smile.
She reaches over and pulls a bottle of water from the fridge. After taking a few deep swigs, she touches the tip of Newt's snout. "Would you like anything?"

It was the look of pain at the sound of his calls that he finally noticed that something was amiss. He flinched back timidly at the touch, glancing down bashfully at his webbed feet , "Are... are you alright? I've b-been... been wor-wor-worried about you... "
