Briar continued frowning. True, newborns didn't have as much understanding of the world as adults did. He shook his head. "I don't think that's true," he mumbled, gazing sadly out over the lake. "You aren't shameful or worthless just because you made a mistake. Whoever told you that can't be a very nice Numa."

Kechara looked at him and shrugged. Lifting a paw, she reached out with a talon to touch his cheek, "I'm glad you don't think that." She replied softly and smiled faintly, retracting her paw. She was too tired to really notice what she was doing. She she been fully awake, her action would have caused her to blush instantly and stammer an apology probably forcing her to flee. She was half-sleep though, and therefore it loosened her strangling grip on herself.
"My mother." She said softly, "My mother told me that." She confided softly and shifted slightly, giving him more distance from her just in case he thought she was trying to get closer to him. He was her friend and probably one of the only ones she'd ever have.

Briar turned to Kechara when he felt the talon touch his cheek. He stared at her, heat rising to his cheeks. The blush faded quickly when he heard what Kechara said next. Her mother had scolded her for making mistakes? That upset him.
"That's not a kind thing for a mother to do," Briar said, frowning. "Mothers are supposed to be nurturing, not scold you for an error." At least, that was the idea Briar had of what a mother was supposed to be like. He had never known his own.

Kechara blinked in surprise, "Really? I thought every mother was like that. They'd show you what you did wrong and have you fix it." She shrugged, "All the mothers I knew were like that, my mother too." She sighed and looked up at the sky, "Hey Briar...?" She began softly, "....oh..." She flushed, "Sorry..." She shook her head dismissively, "N-nevermind. It's not important."

Briar considered things. "Well, mothers should help you when you make a mistake, but they shouldn't scold you for having made the mistake," he said, wondering if his words weren't all that clear. "They shouldn't tell you that you're not allowed to make mistakes." He paused and blinked at Kechara. "What did you want to ask?"

Kechara nodded, "I see...it's a lot different here, isn't it?" she murmured absently, eyes locked onto the lake once more.
She flushed a darker shade of red, "It's n-nothing, honest." She replied hastily. She couldn't even remember what she was going to ask. It was probably something stupid as well. She played with her paws nervously. He was and had been so nice to her, she should thank him she really should. But what could she do? "U-um...." She stumbled nervously "I-Is there anything you like?"

"I suppose it is," Briar agreed with a nod.
He was going to insist that Kechara ask whatever she had planned to ask when she stuttered out a question. Blinking, Briar thought over the question. "Well, there are lots of things," he said. "I like good fruit and candy, having fun with friends, watching the sun set over the lake and the moonlight reflecting over the water, talking with you." He rambled on, not realizing the last thing he had said.

Kechara listened quietly, her mind mulling over what she could do for him, well, at least until his last few words. Were her cheeks to become any darker she would begin to resemble a cherry. "...! B-Briar?" She stammered, unable to believe what he had said. She stared at him, no one had ever said that to her before and she wasn't sure she could believe her ears. He liked to talk to her? Her gaze dropped to her paws again as her mind twisted over her thoughts, He probably didn't say it... her mind told her softly, You probably heard wrong, and it might not even mean anything. She glanced at him from under her multi-colored hair. A faint hope still lingered, causing her heart to beat just a little faster.

Briar almost jumped at the stammer of his name. He stared at her as his words slowly repeated themselves in his mind. '...talking with you.' A dark blush rose to his own cheeks as he realized what he had said. "I do enjoy talking with you," he said, though still embarrassed at having unconsciously admitted that, but it was quite true. He liked speaking with Kechara, and he liked being around her.

Could her blush get any darker? "Oh...ah..." She brushed her hair out of her eyes nervously, eyes firmly attached to the lake, "N-no one's ever told me th-that..." She whispered, sure he couldn't hear what she had said, with how her voice was fading. He liked to talk with her...did that mean something more? Her mind raced with fear and apprehension, both of which were laced with hope and excitement. She had never dealt with something as complex as what was happening now. Truth be told, she had never been in any type of situation like this. Back where she came from she was mostly outcast from social situations.

Briar could only catch a little of what she said before her voice faded too softly for him to hear. No one ever? He could only guess what the rest of that statement had been, but he got the impression that she meant no one had ever said they liked talking with her.
"I didn't mean to embarrass you," he said. "But you asked what I like, and talking with you is one of the things I like."

Kechara shook her head, "S-sorry. I-I just..." She took a deep breath, hoping she wouldn't just act like a coward again, "B-Briar um...." She glanced away quickly, but with a well of silent determination she looked back, catching his eyes, "I....I l-like you." she looked away, eyes wide in disbelief that she had said it, "I-I..." She gulped audibly, "...really like you." She couldn't look at him, the fear of him reacting badly towards her statement was too great. Her heart was beating so fast--she was almost giddy. Maybe....maybe he thought the same? Or-or maybe he didn't.
Her ears flattened against her skull, what would she do if he didn't? She'd look like a fool again--and she probably just ruined their friendship. "Ah!" She moved as if to stand up, "S-sorry! I-I-!" She flushed with shame, "I-I didn't mean--sorry! S-so sorry! Please--please don't--" She hung her head, unable to leave, but unable to speak again. She simply waited for him to reject her and for her to just deal with the pain of her stupidity.

Briar waited silently, patiently for Kechara to say what she needed to say. Like? His eyes widened as his heart jumped. She liked him? Really liked him? His heart hammered away so fast in his chest that he was surprised Kechara couldn't hear its pounding. The apologies kicked in, and Briar realized he had been sitting in quiet delight over hearing those words.
"I like you too," Briar said, careful not to blurt out the confession. He gently placed a paw over Kechara's, giving her plenty of time to pull it back if he was being too forward.

Kechara blinked, surprised. She had been fully expecting him to reject her and walk off, leaving her to nurse her wounds-both physically and mentally-in peace. It was a shock-though most definitely not an unpleasant one-when he replied with an agreement of his own. She raised her gaze to his, and then looked down at the paw covering her own. Dark pink eyes wide with disbelief mingled with happiness transferred their gaze from the paw to his face and back again. Slowly, she raised her other paw, trembling from emotions and clasped it over his own.
She blushed even darker-how that was possible no one knew-and smiled, "D-do you happen to know if this is a dream?" She asked, giggling nervously. Her logic would follow such a thing of course, she couldn't feel the pain from her leg anymore and it was quite possible she had merely fallen asleep--which would mean she never wanted this dream to end.

Briar smiled kindly with gentleness and care in his gaze. He squeezed her paw lightly with his own. "Unless we've both fallen asleep, I don't think this is a dream," he said with a laugh in his voice. Even it was a dream, it was far too nice of one to interrupt. He certainly didn't remember falling asleep, and he could feel the warmth of Kechara's paws around his own.
