Something Strange Comes this Way...
For a moment, the air shimmers, and reality itself bends over upon itself. Buildings distort, pavement becomes fluid, oceanic waves forming over the ground.

Soon, it's over. The buildings look just as they had before, the ground was firmly where it should be. People popped their heads out of windows and doors...

Only to hear the automated, monotone words, "Threat Detected".

There, in what was once the middle of a wide street a barracade had appeared. A squat, concrete building, devoid of windows, only small, narrow slits, designed more for rifle fire than letting in light It stretched across the street, seeming to merge seemlessly with the buildings.

And on top of the building, four devices stood. They could only be called weapons arrays. The mixture of what seemed to be large bore cannons, missile packs, and odder things still hummed to life.

The thunder of the weapons seemed capable of ripping the sky in two. And such a storm of metal, magic, and missiles came flying out, pulverzing the buildings, unerring aim slaughtering those innocent, poor bastards.

The guns kept firing, roving from target to target. The buildings, their walls started to cave in, ceiling feel, and soon there was a ring of rubble piles, stretching out 100 yards from the squat building. Broken bodies, but none of them moved.

"Threat Eliminated."

And there, just two feet from the bunker, in the middle of all the destruction and chaos, a small marble was glowing.

((We're in Barton Fountain, so would we be able to hear this chaos from there?

Furthermore, how much of the area did you destroy?))

((One hundred yard radius from the building.

And considering that means about what, 4 city blocks just got reduced to scrap, yeah, you'd probably hear it. Even without cybernetic/alien ears...))

Xallen heard the destruction from all the way at the Barton Fountain, and as he approached the area, he quickly came across the area which had been destroyed. He scanned as much as he could, from his present location, focusing mainly on anything which was still standing after the onslaught. It looked almost level, but any amount of surviving cover would be wonderful.

Given that there was a perfect circle surrounding this barricade, he figured that they were probably attacking anything that came within a certain distance. As such, he found a rock that was lying on the ground nearby and "loaded" it into his arm cannon. He released, sending the rock flying in the direction of the barricade, not expecting to hit anything significant from that distance.

The building was silent as the rock flew. It hit the building square, but against the concrete walls, did nothing more than perhaps a light, barely noticable chip from that distance.

The rubble approaching the building was only at the 'corners' of the building. It seemed it had dropped in the middle of an intersection. The directions that were perpendicular to the sides were the streets. Nothing was there, no rubble, no ruin.

But at the corners, the buildings were down. Most of it had settled in a fairly stable configuration. Looked like it'd support people crawling over it. But the pieces of the rubble were small. There wasn't much cover more than just a foot or two sticking out of the ground.

And, as Xallen studdied the lay out, he might notice there was a metallic something in the darkness between himself and the building. It was low, close to the ground. A lot of it, whatever it was, as it seemed to span quite a distance as the light caught the metal.

As Zen entered the area it came into sight. It was something, it the the phrase "All your base are belong to us" to a whole new level, you'd think most people would take this logically and just figure something out, but all kinds of things were swaming Zen's head, not speaking one of those thought words though. "Yeah, we need a plan." Zen mumbeled, that's when Xallen through a rock at it, a rock? What the hell it wasn't Charlie Brown.

((So we are clear about this right now, where are we according to your tracking? I really don't want that to happen again this time.))

Xallen responded to Zen. "We need to figure out why this barricade leveled everything around it. Or how it chose its targets. If it doesn't fire on everything that moves, there must be something else to it." It was a huge barricade with lots of weapons. That's why Xallen had to treat this thing like a puzzle.

He looked over to Zen and made a request. "I'm gonna focus on examining the structure with my cyber-eye. I need you to get a few things so we can see if it detects heat without risking our lives. I need three barrels that could contain me or you inside. They have to be round, but can be made of anything. I need a large duffel bag, which needs to be filled with something a little warmer than body temperature. Food or something is probably good enough. And I need as much ice as you can find, preferably contained in coolers. Ice packs work too. There's lots of houses and stuff nearby, so you should be able to find it."

Then Xallen repeated his typical surveillance routine. His nose focused on any unique smells, though he assumed it would primarily be gunpowder. His eye also zoomed in to focus more on the specifics of the structure. He wanted to know about weapons, defenses, marbles (if any were visible), and anything unusual that stuck out on the ground, such as something metallic.

Alright I'm on it, I'll be back as soon as posssible." Zen russhed off towards the shopping district, his shopping list was pretty big, but he'd take care it nonetheless.

((According to my tracking you'd be on a street, facing the Southeast Face of the building.))

You could see two of the weapon's platforms on the building, one on each corner.

On the side of the building were two narrow, horizontal slits, barely look big enough to get a rifle through, or maybe a well aimed projectile. They were evenly spaced.

Inside the slits, were two shapes, round, hard to make out. Apparently about 3 inches round.

And there, right next to the damned wall, A marble. Glowed faintly, Light Blue in color.

The weapons clusters of course seemed fairly, overkill. Looked like it had a lauching rack for some dumb missiles. Typical "I'll kill you with swarms" type. 4 heavy machine guns, and two things that looked like cannons ripped off a god damned tank.

Then, of course, the metal. A ring around the building it seemed. Someone had apparently hit the Bulk Warehouse for Razor Wire. There was a thick tangle of it about 20 yards from the building, 3 feet high, and 5 yards thick.

((Yes it does.))
PostPosted: Sun Feb 04, 2007 12:58 am

With his ally taking care of the shopping requirements, Xallen then focused on a few details. For instance, how thick was the tangle of wire? Where exactly were the weapons on the building? And where were they aimed? Based on their location, were there any obvious blind-spots for the weapons? Was that marble something he had seen/obtained before? And finally, what were those things in the slits? Were there people watching him?

Thus, he decided there were two prudent things to do. However, he really needed to know what on earth those things in the slit were before he tried to fire a projectile at it. Therefore, with his focus mainly on the slits and the weapons, he cautiously entered the radius of doom. He expected that he'd be fired upon, but he'd like to know things like how fast they reacted, how close he was when they fired, and what weaponry they chose to use. The instant he saw any unusual movement, like a missile flying at him, he'd run away.

The wire was thick, the spirals just about 4 inches apart. Not thick enough you couldnt' concievably make your way through it, but thick enough that trying to charge through it was going to be really, really stupid.

The weapons, exactly, seemed to be mounted on a turrent, located one foot from either edge of the ceiling. The ceiling itself seemed to be flat.

((Meaning in Diagram speak the weapons layout would be like...

=====
=====
==W==
=====

Presuming each mark is about 6 inches, and the upper left mark is a corner))

It seemed however that maybe, if you could get next to the building, they wouldnt' be able to hit you. But judging from the devestation, there wasn't much else that offered a 'blind spot'.

And no, the Marble was not one that had been seen before. But it was one color, and glowing, like all advanced marbles were.

And finally, as he trained his eyes on the slit, he could make out the objects were black. Seemed to catch the light whenever they got the chance, but it was hard, almost impossible to make out any markings on or in it. As he continued to study, he could make out something. They seemed to be glassy.

Xallen could approach within 5 yards of the marked 'ring' of ruins, at htat 100 yard mark. However, as soon as he crossed into that 95 yard sweet spot, both weapons platforms on the corners near him turned with mechanical perfection, trained right on him as they fired. No wait, no warning, no voice this time.

Just blasting.

((Weapons incoming are... 8 machine gun bursts (Hit or miss, if you need to know the number of bullets, say, I dunno, 10-20 each?), eight dumb Missiles (Explosive types), and finally, four shots from the "Cannons". They might have been cannon, but Energy Cannon seemed more appropriate. The shots weren't moving at light speed. Just about as fast as the bullets actually, but it appeared to be shooting out bolts of energy at Xallen, similiar to his ray gun.))
