Her eyes twinkled and Relm ate her soup with a sly smile touching her lips. oh, she could tell Riley knew more than he was letting on but she was in too good of a mood to pry. Besides, she was not really all that curious about it. Mild curiosity mixed with good mood made a very easy-going Relm. Another time, perhaps she would see about learning more. If she was so inclined. "So it's a force, but substantial enough to study by "science"? That's interesting. Out of my specialty, I'm sure, but interesting."
"So how long is your lunch break?" The pictomancer asked, slicing a bite of sausage & chewing carefully. Her eyes flicked to the incomplete mural. Not for a need to hurry to work on it, but more a casual cataloging of what things she was likely to work on with it today. Part of her wondered if Kaleb noticed the tight weave of magics that she had used upon it. Relm knew it was thin, fine as gossamer but with a count that would put Egyptian silk to shame. In its own way it was as complex as the spell the healer used for his portals -but flat with all layers pressed subtly against the walls.

"There are lots of magics that can be studied in a scientific manner," Kaleb said with a smile. His own research was based on scientific methods of investigation and hypothesis testing, only a fool would experiment blindly with the elements available to their magic. Kaleb ate another spoonful of soup before setting the spoon down to pick up his chocolate milk, but that too was set down as he listened to Relm's questions.
"H-how long is our lunch break?" Kaleb asked his partner, looking a little nervous and starting to get fidgety. He hadn't been paying attention at all by the time they had been permitted to leave, so he really didn't know how long Rufus was going to let them stay out. The last thing the mage wanted to do was be late getting back from lunch the first time he had been taken to a meeting like this.

"If you can't study the affects of any type'a magic scientifically then yer doin somethin wrong." He snickered slightly. "Everythin that causes some sort a reaction can be studied." It worked even better when application of the substance caused changes in biological things.
"We've got an hour fer break." He checked his watch. "So we've got a bit longer"

"I suppose you can, if you know much about science. What little I know I had to learn from the bowels of an airship when Cyan wasn't looking." That was not quite the truth- she could ask Rikku to teach her more but other than the workings of airships Relm really was not interested. Now if her sister ever got together with Kaylee & built that airship like she kept talking about then the pictomancer would be interested again. But not likely before. "I was more insinuating that you could run tests and things on the matter itself, not just study the reactions." Taking a sip of tea she held onto the warm glass with both hands and tilted her head slightly at Kaleb. "Unless there is a way to trap & study magic that I don't know about?"
She hoped not. Relm remembered the empire trapping & sealing espers to siphon their magic and the idea of any way to trap magic sounded far too much like that for her comfort. The pictomancer had not seen the Esper containment facility herself, but the descriptions were frightening enough. Relm shivered & sipped thankfully at her warm tea.

Kaleb relaxed when Riley said they still had time, and went back to sipping at his soup while he listened to the conversation. He looked up to catch Relm's glance, and then frowned for a minute as he thought about it.
"I-I don't know, for my magic it takes a lot of work to condense the energy itself outside the body, a-and even then it dissolves quickly into the environment." He put down his spoon and held out his hands, concentrating until a fluid and eerily glowing globe appeared between them. "I-I suppose you could study it if you could find a way to keep it from disappearing, but you'd also need a mage with enough ability to condense it in the first place."

"See there's where Mako is differen't. In the outside environment orment it's either in a liquid state or in the form of crystals. So you can do some interesting things with it." He knew there were things down in the Labs that had been normal once but with injections of Make had turned into monsters.
"So ya can study mako outside of reaction but it doesn't really tell ya much other than it's a magical force, or something similar, so i guess it's still easier ta figure out what it does when it's applied to something else"

Relm relaxed visibly at Kaleb's answer but then tensed even as she took a bite of buttered bread at what his partner said. Espers turned into crystal-like shards of magicite which was the peak of learning new magic from them -even for one with esper blood in her like Relm had. She forced herself to swallow. "Crystals? Where does mako come from? Like its source."
The pictomancer hoped she was prepared for the answer. That is if she got one.

Kaleb let his magic completely dissolve, and stayed quiet as he stuck another spoonful of soup into his mouth. Although part of his training had involved learning about different types of magic, he knew Riley could probably give a better answer. Although he hadn't ever asked about it and had no clear idea as to why it could be so, the little mage knew his partner was very familiar with the stuff.

"Well the scientist in charge of the labs babbles something about the Lifestream but i don't really know what that is. I think Mako's like ... it's sorta a livin substance that gathers and when ya get enough of it then ya can use it. More of it and certain types gives ya different kinds ah magic." He pulled back one sleeve and after a moment pulled a bright blue ball out of his wrist.
"Like this ... this'n's Friga, ice magic. There's basically all tha elements and sometimes even ones that can call up other creatures."

Relm could not help herself -she reached to touch the Friga ball. Although she had been impressed with Kaleb's magic condensing this was completely new to her. But, summoning? She had not been able to summon since the espers closed their world. Still Relm did not want to offer too much information. He worked for Rufus ShinRa after all, and unlike Kaleb she could not call him a trusted friend. Although if Kaleb trusted him that was marks in his favor. "Summons?" She asked as nonchalantly as she could. "Like what?"
She smiled impishly at Kaleb. "Can you summon, Scholar?"

Kaleb looked up and blushed when he heard the question directed at him. "I-I can, b-but it's not something I do often..." He fidgeted slightly, that magic probably wouldn't have been on the list of spells Relm saw when she used her own magic back at the park that one day, it was more of a personal bond than a spell.

He pushed the ball back into his wrist after a moment. The stuff was cold and he shook the feeling off before picking up his sandwich to take a bite. He let Kaleb answer before he did and eyed his partners back. He remembered what was there.
"Lots a stuff. I can't do it yet and Rufus doesn't exactally what that kinda stuff in his office so i've never bothered learnin. I mean with Kaleb i can handle stuff on my own anyway"

Relm shrugged, trying to push aside her disappointment. "Oh. No matter I guess. I've not summoned anything in a while..." There was the slightest trace of a frown before she smiled once more as if nothing had happened. "Would be nice, but I know the ones I used to know are gone." Not like Blondie & her cousin meeting kitsu versions of the aeons Yuna used to summon. Our summons were espers & they went away. Though some seem to be similar they're not the same.
She ate her soup thoughtfully, and finished the last bites of sausage before running a piece of bread around in her bowl to soak up the broth still there. "You do take care of him, don't you?"
It was not quite an accusation, but close. Her light green eyes meeting the turk's. Yes, she had asked Kaleb if he trusted them, but it was one thing for the shy mage to say so -it was another thing to gauge such things on her own. So far... Relm liked her friend's partner. He did not ruffle her feathers. A playful smile started to grow.

Kaleb blushed even worse at Relm's question, and seemed intent on finishing his soup and drink. Even with the smaller portions it took him awhile to get through the meal since he always ate slowly. He wasn't going to try and answer for his partner, it seemed like Relm specifically wanted to hear what Riley had to say.

"Well he ain't dead yet." He looked up from his sandwich at Relm. "I don't really gotta 'take care' of him. He can take care of 'em self."
It wasn't like he was Kaleb's babysitter even though sometimes he had to wonder. Though he had started to make it a habit to make sure that Kaleb got enough to eat.
