So, I finally got it watched and......
I liked it. I didn't love it like the book or the musical. I didn't think it's a great piece of work, either.
It's camp. It's no where near true to the original story. Erik was indeed almost cuddlable. (Note made up word) Definitely has many many problems.
Yet, I loved certain scenes in it. Erik's rage when the audience boos Christine. The whole unmasking at the picnic(I didn't like the picnic or any of that, just the end.) Hell, just the look of Erik in general and his acting when not being cute and having a sense of humor. The two masks. Just cracked me up.
I recommend it if you feel like letting go and just watching something kind of campy but fun. It's better than some of the other versions out there. Need I mention telepathic rats?
Worst parts: A lovely picnic thru an underground forrest filled with dead animals with Erik sporting a fetching hat and cane. And the whole backstory was just re-tard-ed.
Um. It doesn't follow the book because it's not based on the book.
It's based on the Yeston/Kopit musical. And follows it quite well, actually. Apparently you've never seen it.
But yes, that's why it was not like the Gaston Leroux/Webber/whatever.
It's VERY on the ball for what it's based on.
