“Personally, I don’t think that the gods exist,” he said flatly. “Or, if they do, then they don’t give a damn about what happens here. Not to mention, unnatural is sometimes better than natural. I know that I prefer my meat cooked, and that uncooked meat is bad for a human healthwise. Seems to me that the gods didn’t do well on that design.”

"Pfeh. If the gods had meant for humans to eat meat raw, we wouldn't have opposable thumbs to make fire with, or mages. Since we have both and we happen to have enough intelligence to live in cities instead of in caves, I'm a firm believer in the fact that there is a god out there, somewhere, who made humanity.

Since I've seen a heckload of my colleagues try to bring life to the dead and stuff like that... making life out of clay like golems... They just can't do it. It's always defective, it nearly NEVER breeds true and even then, the best constructs all have gaping flaws that limit their usefulness or their lifespans. And it's not as if the race of man came from nowhere or started out as some sort of animal... So clearly we were created and whoever designed man must've been a genius. Therefore gods exist. Whether they actually want to DO anything with us or not... that's another question. "

Djibril countered, amused.

"I've never been smited by a god and I certainly can't directly blame any of my misfortunes on them, instead of abysmal bad luck or basic human greed and stupidity, so I'm prepared to believe they're decent. It's humans who I've seen so far that are corrupt. And priests are no better than the rest. They just like lording it over the rest of us. I mean.. really. have you ever, once, in your life, directly had a deity of ANY sort look at you and pick at what you're doing?

Nah... It's always the priests.

In any case, since you think the gods don't care about us...Would you actually WANT a god to come down and meddle in YOUR life? That's what prayers are all about. Asking a god to meddle.

Really. they're supposed to be omnipotent, right? See all and know all?

Do you really want someone like that interfering on a regular basis?

It's better that they made us and we make our own lives as we choose, than to have someone always looking over your shoulder and telling you what to do whether you like it or not.

And as for unnatural? Unnatural isn't someone liking someone of their own gender or lusting after someone else's husband or wife. Unnatural is someone deliberately fusing an animal with a person so that they end up with a furry, bleeding creature that whimpers pathetically as it dies, or one of those damn arenas where people fight to the death to amuse some poce on a throne. THAT'S unnatural."

Luckily for both Mal and Dji, Vresth started acting up at that moment, eliminating the need for talk of gods and faith and the like.

Well, that was a relief. On both sides.

“I’m not here to argue about gods, goddesses, natural, unnatural or anything like that. As far as I’m concerned, they either don’t exist or, if they do exist, they’re probably pissing their pants as they laugh and watch us. I left my faith back in the war, on the end of a gore-encrusted arrow. I don’t know if we started off as some type of animal or not, nor do I particularly care.” Well, this was an interesting conversation. They had moved from dragons to Dji’s history to gender and then ended up with gods somehow.

“Still, can’t say I would care for someone interfering in my life on any basis, regular or not.” He was lucky to have been promoted quickly---or lucky that sergeant wasn’t a job with a long-term prospect---since sergeants didn’t take orders. They predicted them, which basically meant that they suggested it in such a way that meant their superiors ended up thinking they thought it up themselves. It was tough work, sergeanting.

He relaxed slightly, however, when Djibril went on to say what she didn’t think was unnatural. Well, that was a relief. He didn’t want to end up being in the same room as one of those really religious folks, the ones who felt that anyone who denied their so-called ‘natural laws’ had to have the evil purged from within them with fire. Or whatever they had on hand.

“Does he always do this during storms?” he asked curiously, gesturing towards Vresth. It seemed like an important question at the moment, and it would get them away from dangerous topics like faith.

“Does he always do this during storms?”

Djibril snickered. "Well, this squirming? Yes.He always squirms. He's hyper as I think you noticed? He either tries to climb up the glass to look at the shiny lights or he does this." she gestured to the clinging dragonling. "I think he likes the lights but isn't fond of the loud thunder." A moment of though as she tried to put it into words. "He likes fireworks... or at least likes colored lights but is not too fond of the boom sounds. He hides or runs around and tries to get into laps..and shivers a lot like this."

"He's not very fond of being wet and catches cold rather quickly right now so he doesn't like rain like this.. or snow. He doesn't like bathing unless it's in shallow water.. we agree on that...but he likes being clean and splashing puddles to play with and he likes shiny things... cloth, gems, jewlry.. even glass. And he stares at his own scales when he's bored. He doesn't like pointy things or injuries and he ...wails... when he trips. And he doesn't like pointy things...I think after.. "
She thought about it for a while.
"Five years? Something like that..he's still not able to figure out who not to trust, unless he can actually see the blade unsheathed, he'll assume they're out to play."

Useless information, really… most young animals in Mal’s experience--- not that he had a whole lot of experience with animals of any type in any stage of life except on a plate--- were easily startled by loud noises. Hell, even older animals were. As for not liking being wet, well, he could agree with the little bugger on that. More likely, Mal was just being… well… Mal. Some called it paranoia, and maybe it was. He didn’t much care what people called it. There was just no such thing as being moderately cautious on the battlefield; you were either completely cautious or you were completely dead. Sure, he wasn’t out there now, but old habits died hard, especially habits like this one that prevented you from dying in any fashion, including hard.

At least the hatchling wasn’t clinging to him, that was all he cared about. It didn’t seem like the storm would let up any time soon though… maybe considering that offer of a room for the night wouldn’t be such a bad idea after all… some men would have been at least a little ashamed at bringing up an offer that they had turned down less than twenty minutes ago, but Mal was pragmatic, which he took to meant ‘almost completely shameless’.

“Would that offer of a room still be open? I didn’t pack anything for swimming, and I don’t fancy trying in the nude later when I leave…”

“Would that offer of a room still be open? I didn’t pack anything for swimming, and I don’t fancy trying in the nude later when I leave…”

Djibril continued petting Vresth, raising an eyebrow at the man's decision to accept an offer he had rejected quite recently... But then it was all too clear why he'd reconsidered. It WAS pouring out there and Dji knew the nearest town was several miles away.

"Yes, the offer is still open. The empty guest rooms in the tower are along the corridor to your right. We don't have many visitors, so they're not really that large. I hope you don't mind?" she asked mildly
