Confusion-prone. A nice way to put it, and a bit clearer than the way had phrased it. Duo was making sense, even if Safi's body didn't want to admit that fact, so it was an easy thing to nod in agreement. It would have been a fine thing to have come across as overly pushy or whatever, regardless of intent. Or maybe it was because of intent? Who knew.
But at least they understood each other. Nodding, Safi leaned on one hoof and looked over at the other stallion. "So, getting back to the safer topic?"

"How about them birds?" Duo drawled, glancing up overhead at a scandalized looking cardinal and his mate. The way he said it made the word come out much like 'bards'. "Why you think they're looking at me like that?"

Well, they couldn't come much safer than that! Still, Safi was surprised at the speed and ease with which Duo followed through with that suggestion. He was beginning to think that Duo was even more flexible than he himself was, or at the very least, less confused. Still, he was grateful for the change of topic, and turned his attention to the birds as well.
"Well, obviously we intruded on their privacy. Or maybe the male thinks you're making a move on his girl and is deciding whether or not to peck out your eyes as a way to protect his mate." Yeah, that was an idea!

Duo tilted his head up and whistled at the bird. "Hey gorgeouuuuus." he sang cheerily. "Wanna come siiiit with me?"
There was a loud squawk, and the cardinal leapt off the branch, circling Duo's head, chirping furiously. Duo buried his head. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"

Changing the subject had been merely a suggestion first, but now it had to be well and truly changed. Safi couldn't believe what was happening, but all of a sudden Duo was being beset by a very angry cardinal. "Careful, Duo! Looks like he doesn't like the idea of you muscling in on his girl, better let him know you don't mean it!"
Still, he was laughing even as he spoke the words. A full-grown stallion, being attacked by a bird!

Duo lifted his head, tears of laughter? terror? streaming down his face. "I'm sorry!" he wailed at the cardinal, whimpering as it sat on his head and plucked at his hairs. Out came one! Two! Three!
And then the male was gone, flying back up to the tree, and the hairs, his triumph against the big bad soquili, were being proudly displayed to his mate, and turned into a nest. Duo rubbed his head mournfully. "Fine then, meanie!"
"Chirp!!!"

The battle to end the ages, it wasn't. Seeing Duo's cowering and the cardinal's flight of triumph, Safi finally gave into the laughter that had been threatening him, sprawling completely on the ground while he laughed so hard that tears rolled down his cheeks.
"BIRD! You...lost...to...bird!" Not exceptionally articulate, but considering the circumstances...

Duo made an offended noise. "Beaks! And feet! And a willingness to pluck out my eyes! How can you look down on me for my fear, it was only natural." he sniffed, voice huffy. He wasn't annoyed though, more embarassed someone had actually witnessed this horrifying scene. "I'd like to see you do better!" he muttered. "I bet you couldn't!"

Safi was still laughing too hard to reply, so he simply waved a limp wing at the other stallion, a sign for Duo to wait until he could breathe again before he answered. As it was, a few more minutes of laughter passed before he was able to even comment. "I'd do better in not pissing off a damn bird!" And then he was laughing once more.

Duo gave a grumbly noise, settling his head down on his forelegs. "So impolite." he griped. "I did that for your amusement, and this is the thanks I get."
Laughter.
Oh, how troublesome.
He hid his own grin, dropping his head and letting out loud mock sobs (which were really little choked giggles). "So cruuuuel, Safi! And I thought we had a connection going!"

"Connection or no, I'd have to be dead not to find that funny."
And funny it was, though Safi had all but eliminated the need to laugh. Damn but that had been amusing... "So if it WAS for my benefit, you should be happy I found it so amusing!"
At that, Safi shook his head, lifting it to give Duo a grin. Like guilt tactics were going to work on him; not when he was in this good a mood.
But on that note...best to quit while you're ahead.
Still smiling, Safi rose to his feet and flipped Duo a bow. "Well, it's been an interesting, amusing, and empowering time chatting with you, Duo; but I'm sorta on a clock, so this would be the time I take my leave. Keep a lookout for those birds!"
With a chuckle and a wink, Safi fired that last parting shot at the other stallion, then turned and headed back the way he'd came. Elizabeth was expecting him back home, after all; he had a daughter to mind. But she'd undoubtably forgive his lateness; he had a good reason...
