Harry Potter was not the best fantasy I ever read. It doesn't not have an amazing style. However, J.K. Rowling, I think, is a wonderful storyteller. I found the start of book one slow, and I didn't even finish it until after I read 2 &3, and possibly some of 4. I started reading at a friend's house, and finding anything of hers was always something of a trial. I think the beginning is slow because it's just before a major transition period for Harry. In most books, the time before a character's life changes is often described as slow and monotonous. Looking back on the moments, days, or weeks before a major change in my own life ... its seems the minutes of my memory dragged into years. The characters are a bit childish, and th lines between good and evil clearly drawn (especially at first, and less and less toward the end.) I think it's because it was written for a generation of children, who matured as the series went on. In the books, just as it is in real life ... the place between good and evil becomes less clear. Instead of seeing in only black and white, we see things in more shades of gray.

Anyway, the books pretty much get better, with the occasional exception. As for the claim that Order of the Phoenix was bad, I can't say a lot ... as a friend half-spoiled me and I read it so fast I don't think I remember any of it. Also, I refuse to read it again, in light of certain events that I can't read again. Ever. And it's not because of bad writing.

it's good, very addictive..i wouldnt call it a great fantasy though when the story isnt too well developed or detailed, not when compared with others at least. Ihave read all the books nonetheless and enjoyed them too :]

I just need to say if you watch the movies, don't read the books.
If you see the Harry Potter movies, if you try reading the books you will either
1. Go completely bored out of your mind.
or
2. Go crazy finding all the errors in the movies.
I repeat, do not read the Harry potter books AFTER you watch the movies.
If you read them before, you most likely will like them.

I think you should read out the series, it is a great books and I ahve to tell you they get better and better from one book to the other...

Sometimes some sleepy parts come up... but that happens mostly in every books, sometimes and it is inportant to the storyline so it is OK if it is a little sleepy...

While I, too, agree that the characters are a bit predictable, I also thought they managed to mature a bit as the books progress. Not significantly, but enough to be somewhat believable. Some of the things they go through in the books would seem to mature the people more than they do, but we're looking at the way an author interprets the characters, their reactions to what they have gone through versus what they are going through, and the maturity level she believes they would have from the experiences. As Unnursvana pointed out, parts that drag come up in most books and it's usually worth it to continue through them. In the case of Harry Potter, there are a few points that come up in those drag areas that come up again when they are needed for better understanding of what's going on.

This is just my own opinion, but I think it's worthwhile to read them. Even if it's between more serious or complex books.

I started reading Harry Potter when I was seven, but I read it in this order:
HP and the Chamber of Secrets
HP and the Goblet of Fire
HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban
HP and the Order of the Phoenix
HP and the Half-Blood Prince
HP and the Philosopher's Stone
HP and the Deathly Hallows

But the story was quite clear, and I was having a Harry Potter craze in years 5-6. The plot was quite good, but I think the whole idea of Deathly Hallows just ruined it all. It seemed somehow like she was writing normally, then couldn't think of what to write, so just put that in, and then realised she didn't have much time, so she finished the book off quickly.

The characters are a bit too predictable, though. It's not like you don't know that Harry's going to get into the "best" house, be the best at Quidditch and so forth. I think it would have been more interesting doing it from someone else's viewpoint as well as Harry's from time to time.

i really liked the series. but if you thought the beginning of the first book was slow, then the other beginnings are also kind of slow, but it lasts for a shorter time and it's not AS boring. i think they're worth reading, although tons of people would say so STEREOTYPE. but it's like really detailed stereotype.

It's true with all the hype you would expect it to be better, but that's true about all really popular books *cough cough TWILIGHT cough cough* Hehe, had a frog in my throat... ANYWAYS! I thought the series was good, except the last book had a sort of sugarcoated ending. I liked the first book, and I didn't find the begginning slow at all! I thought it was a good series, but it sort of depends on the person.

Harry Potter can get boring but, reading it is pretty much worth it. The only reason the first book was starting off slow was because you had to meet characters, Know how Harry lives like in the durslys house, and know how Harry feels about the people he's living with. But after you read the first Harry potter book it kind of gets faster. Some of it can be slow when your meeting other characters but, it does get faster. So I think it is worth reading I'm on the 5th book. I want to get to 6 and 7th already but, I've been caught up in school work.

Harry Potter starts out as a children's series, and ends in the teens. There are many parts in the books where the story drags. The plots are interesting and with the exception with the last book make you want to keep reading. I personally do not like the style and how JK Rowling writes. I am not a fan of that and can name several other book series that surpass Harry Potter in every way. BUT they are still books worth reading but I wouldn't go out and buy the hardbacks.

As a big fan of Harry Potter, I will admit that the first two books are a little slow. But the beginnings are always slow, right? The authors need to plot out the basics so that you will understand the theme. There are 7 books, just saying, and they are awesome. As Harry's knowledge of the wizrding world and his connection with Voldemort progresses, the books are hard to put down. Therefore, I think it is definetly worth reading the last 6 books.
