as far as how much judaism has changed......well it hasnt. its only you and your peers who are changing the religion. if you wanna keep kosher, then look for stuff with a hecture (like ou) poeple get paid to let make sure which foods are kosher or not. you cant pick and choose which parts of a religion to follow. its your obligation as a jew to be jewish. being jewish is not just an identity its how you live. if you dont wanna be jewish then admit it and convert. its really sad when the only way to tell if someone is jewish is if they dont have a christmas tree.
People can tell with me... I wear a magen david every day. And I miss a whole lot of school days for holidays.
But honestly? I'm not able to follow things to the letter of the law. I just couldn't do it. All of it is a huge part of my life, but I do enough that I'm comfortable with things.
so we do as much as comfort allows?

I feel like the young Jews who went into Palestine before Israel was established. I don't really consider myself religious, as I don't attend service(for Judaism or Christianity), I don't celebrate significant holidays, but I still feel a strong bond to my people and to Israel, even having never been there.

I don't intend to be buried in a Jewish cemetary, either. I want to be cremated and have the carbon from my cremation be turned into a diamond for my son(if I have one) to wear on a ring or something.

I'm actually hoping to move to Israel in five years or so.
your entire body wont produce enough carbon.

Then explain how they already make diamonds artificially this way.

Wow, reading this, I see I've been REALLY, REALLY bad.... sweatdrop Growing up with reform parents in a Christian town doesn't help keep me observant I guess.

One thing I've noticed, Jewish women are better, they tell you what's up, whether you like it or not. xp
Nothing wrong with being Reform.

well i could argue that
You could. Doesn't mean that it will do you any good.

Everything evolves, even religion.
The Orthodox no longer sacrifice animals, does that mean they aren't Jews? They follow the Torah, but only parts of it.

I consider myself a Jew. I live in a way that, I believe, makes God happy. A Jewish life. I do not want to convert. To me, Judaism is an identity. It is a part of who I am. It is how I was raised, it is how I relate to the world, it is the air that I breathe.

It bothers me that so many of our Orthodox members always seem to put down our less observant members. I know you guys don't mean to, but you don't need to post things like 'well i could argue that'. It just isn't necessary. We're all here because we're Jews. Whether we're more or less observant shouldn't matter. The point is that we are, no matter what, the Jewish people and we need to be united, at least culturally if we can't agree religiously.
Melella- well, actually... According to custom, you're supposed to convert. I think. There are only a few things we're never allowed to do, even when forced with death, and I don't think conversion is one of them. Taking another's life is one, I know that much. But look at the Spanish Inquisition. People converted rather than die, and lived as Jews in secret.

in the spanish inquistion they didnt ACTUALLY convert. you should die instead of bow down to an idol though.

...What major religions have idolatry anymore? Hinduism? Since when do Hindus force converts?
And even if you were forced to convert, could anyone actually ever control your heart, your thoughts? You'd still be Jewish and not actually convert either. I'm talking about it as a situation similar to the Inquisition, because there's no way anyone could ever make us actually convert and believe another religion.

I know why we can't. It was and example. Just trying to point out that everything is interpretive.

You need to calm down.

i mean that we dont pick and choose what parts we follow (at least we arent supposed to). we follow the torah to the best of our ability, not personal conveniance

What's the difference in that? There are many people who are not able to keep kosher because they live in areas that don't have enough other Jews to sustain a Kosher butcher, for example. Or what about Jews who want to keep kosher, but simply don't have the money to afford Kosher meat? That stuff doesn't come cheap, you know. My family probably spends twice as much on meat as my goyim friends' families have to, just to keep kosher, and it can be a hardship, especially since the kosher butcher is forty-five minutes away. Sometimes, doing everything just isn't an option. We can try very hard. For example, I'll go out of my way in a few months to get my SAT and SAT IIs on Sunday and then drive about forty minutes to get to the Sunday test site at the Jewish Day School. That's going to be a major pain! And for some people, that may not even be an option. Sunday test sites are hard to find if you don't live near many other Jews. So maybe some Jewish teens are forced to take their exams on Saturdays. What are they supposed to do, not take the exams that get them into college?
