Well whatever it is, it won't get you banned, and it's worked for me a bunch.
The first time I heard of them my friend sent me a list with maybe only a quarter of the ones that were in that journal entry. But I still had 2 blue boxes and 3 enchanted trunks when I checked my inventory just after doing that many! 0.o
I don't know what it is, but I like it...

I thought that the links were there for when you missed an event also. o.O I dunno though. There are alot of rumors.

I think it is that if you missed an event, because I had never gotten an even previously and when I did all those links I got three wooden trunks, two brown gift boxes, and a pink one. O_o Maybe events for me are like my dress up the avatar thing; it just doesn't show up.

I didn't open the trunk. The chances of getting something good are the lowest with those, and the last time I opened an exspensive box I got a crappy item so I was kinda like screw it...
sold my trunk for 3k.
& I don't really mind thinking about if there was some great item inside. I mean I still got extra gold and whoever opens it get's a pleasant surprise. Everybody wins if you end up selling something with a good item inside! =D
& if it was another crappy item then I just passed the dissapointment on to somebody else, hurray! XD

I've only opened a trunk about two times during the entire time I've been on Gaia. The first time, I got a "Leather Collar with Cross"... They were worth less than 1k at the time. I sold it, angry that I didn't get something better. They're worth 40k now. I wish I had known they would go up in price. :] The second time, I got a "Space Monster Mask", which is still kind of in-expensive. So I gave it to some random girl I was in a thread with.
I never open anything I get anymore. I don't want to risk it being something lame. D:

I like risking for expensive items, since if you ever get one it will make up for all the crappy items you got. ^^ I don't open trunks though because their chances of getting anything at all decent are so friggin' low. But I open gift boxes; thrill of the chance is fun! ^^

I like opening giftboxes, just not trunks anymore.
My first giftbox/event item gave me a leather collar with cross too! o.o
I didn't pay much attention to how much it was worth, I just like leather so I kept it. I don't really care that it's gone up in price since I'd never consider selling it anyway. It's the oldest item I've held onto now. (& I always wear it, though the scarves usually defeat the purpose)
Yes, I've grown attached to a virtual item. You wanna make something of it? domokun
anyway, I've noticed most of the items I get by opening boxes and trunks are black and leather. The computer can sense the ygo fan within. oh snap

I haven't really gotten any trunks before... Maybe 1, but that's it. I mostly get giftboxes. I love opening them for the same reason and KitsuneChan. You hope that it's something good and when it is, you spazz. =o That's what I did anyway. xD
Aww, you guys are lucky! I've wanted one of those leather collars. D= Maybe I'll get one, if I'm lucky. >>
@pixiesitx: I've gotten attached to some of my pixels too. xD Like my fox set. It was the first thing I bought when I joined and I love them. ><

XD I wish I had an item I was attached to. But I don't. There's a lot of items that I like, but nothing I like so much that I would never consider selling.

I usually end up selling everything I own to get a new outfit I like every few months. This is the first time I've gone a long period in time without doing a complete 180 and selling my whole inventory to make something new on impulse.
I think I might be becoming a packrat myself.
I gave up on the hat quest, but I can't really bring myself to sell them all. It's funny having all this mismatched insanity in my inventory. =)
