I'm not really in the researching mood right now, so don't expect any dates that don't consist of "back in the day"

But, I believe the term "magic" came around "back in the day" when there was no explanation for what happened when some one was suddenly cured, or got over and illness, or had extreme good fortune. You had to go to a priest to be healed, and such. If you were healed and what-not, it was a miracle of God. So if you were not helped or healed through a priest, you were a heathen and it was done by magic.

So really it depends on your religion what you view magic as

I see magic as a manipulation of energies. Though I hardly use it for that. Typically I use my magic to make herbal remedies, or protection charms. Occasionally a good fortune charm. It is normally something basic that isn't too far off from a christian prayer(just to the god(dess) that deals with what I need the magic for) , and a good mixture of herbs, and/or a stone that has the qualities needed for what I do.

Its nothing too complicated. Luckily I haven't seen anyone yet who honestly believes magic is what you see in Sabrina the teenage witch or anything.

I agree. There are many things we just can't explain. So I guess I do believe in magic.

Technically, magical phenomena do not YET have scientific explanations (although all if it does bear a psychological explanation), but that's only PART of magic. A great many things were considered magical before they were observed and categorized by science (like magnetism) so in my mind, science is very magical, and magic can be in many ways scientific. Both find consistent patterns to explain observed phenomena, they just see it in different ways.

(The following information is posted from various online sources compiled together)

Magick & Occult Practices in the Holy Bible:

In Genesis 44:5, Joseph's household manager refers to a silver drinking cup "...in which my lord drinketh and whereby indeed he divineth". Later, Joseph accuses his brothers of stealing the cup, saying "that such a man as I can certainly divine [the identity of the thieves]". These passages show that Joseph engaged in scrying. This is an ancient occultic method of divination in which a cup or other vessel is filled with water and gazed into. This technique of foretelling the future was used by Nostradamus and is still used today.

END the QUOTE

I asked my girlfriend about that. She told me that Joseph's brothers thought Joseph was Egyptian. Egyptians practice divination. Jospeph put the cup in his youngest brother's bag. He used divination as his excuse of knowing the cup was in there. The servant was also referring to that. Girlfriend says that Joseph lied too, but that's off topic and so is all the stuff she said after that... and she bonked me on he head for that.

As for all the other stuff... I'm too lazy to read it.

I practise Wicca so, obviously, I do believe in magic (or Magick, as it is sometimes spelt). I believe that magick is an energy that is all around us, and that we can use it if we want to, but we don't need it all the time. Magick also has it's own laws like 'Everything you do, good or bad, will come back to you three times worth.'

Please don't confuse Wiccan Karmic beliefs for witchcraft laws.

I believe in magic(k); I just call it the power of suggestion.

Terry Pratchett has said over and over (paraphrased): "Many great things have been achieved because those achieving them didn't know they were impossible."

As such, I believe that belief, willpower, and, sometimes, lack of knowledge, will allow extraordinary things to happen. Hence, my belief in magic. I believe that the use of symbols, names of specific gods, etc. all move to heighten belif and willpower, and that the spells, prayers, etc. of others work as a result.

Magic is not about entertaining spirits, that's a misconception. To me magic is about being closer to God/dess by tapping into the energies of his/her creations. (I'm a Christian Mystic btw). Whenever I do tarot or card readings, I always pray for God/dess to guide me, and if I feel that they don't wish for me to continue the reading, I won't continue it.
Spirits are a natural part of the world's energies, they are all around us, as their plane (sometimes called the astral plane) overlaps ours. Some can cross over betweent the two planes (physical and astral) and some are stuck on either side. The only time that spirit play comes into magic is when summoning is used.
Ghosts/spirits and magic are two totally diferent things most of the time, however.

I believe in magic. I also believe it has a link to science. Some things just seem to push the boundries of science. Paranormal activity like ghosts and such. One of these things is magic. However as we have stated above, magic is the manipulation of energy. Energy is part of science. Most thigns have Potential energy, this is stored and stationary energy. It can be used and transformed into another energy, like kenetic energy and that is the energy that makes things move. Well in theory we could state that magic is the manipulation of energy to tanform it into some kind of mystical energy that is harder to explain. Such thigns as healing, divination. Some kidn fo energy is involved and we can name that, magical energy.

The same is also true for telekenesis. Using only the mind you change the potential energy into an obgect into kenetic energy and cause it to move.

I belive in magic, and indeed I use it nearly every day. Whether it's just a simple warming spell or the creation of a major spiritual tool, it second nature for me. I'm always finding new ways of using magic- new applications, new spells, or even whole new ways of working magic. I borrow a lot from fiction/fantasy books.

I believe in magic as a petition to the divine, written in a language that is woven into the fabric of reality itself. Or in other words, that magic is a kind of prayer with props. I believe that it is a system which was created for us by the gods as a natural defense and means of self- and community improvement, and that it is quite effective when used correctly. In my religion, magic and religion itself are intertwined so closely that some argue that they can not be distinguished from one another, and in some contexts the same word (HkA, or "heka") can be used to refer to either one.

Religion itself is certainly magical, in my opinion- there is hardly any religion out there that does not have practices that could not in some sense be said to be magical.

I don't believe in magic, but I do like fantasy novels.
