This is Halloween

Pash briskly pushed Rekha's stroller down the sidewalk of the brightly lit streets. He was following closely behind Anao and Owen who were gleefully skipping in front and talking rapidly about their growing hoard of candy. This was Halloween. Pash's first with children about to ferry from house to house. It was interesting as he seemed to have been caught up in a small pack of them and like other parents was delegated the potion of follower and person who clearly isn't walking fast enough.

Still it was interesting to see all the costumes of various children milling about. Even small Rekha had become a last minute Cheshire cat with his egg resembling the mad hatter. The baby boy seemed oblivious to what was going on but burbled happily anyway. Pash collected chips and cheezies for him while Owen and Anao received all sorts of candies appropriate for their ages.

Pop cans were placed in the underside of the stroller so as not to weigh them down and to prevent accidental breaking and spillage. this made the stroller heavier but Pash didn't mind too much. He was fining the whole experience quite pleasant. Cries of " Trick or treat" and " Thank you" rang in his ears and there was for the most part only smiles on the children's faces. There was the odd look of terror or sullen glances from older children being forced to accompany siblings but they were few and far between.

By the end of the night as the group returned home everyone was weary but content. Rekha had fallen asleep in the stroller, Owen was leaning on Anao who was leaning on him and Pash was carrying all of collected candy. It had been a fun night for all involved.

It looks like things are taking a turn for the interesting around the house. In addition to Rekha's arrival in solid form Anao has grown. They were far enough apart for the two not to appear connected but who knows? At least Anao is able to help out more around the house and care for her brother's now.

The growth itself was interesting to see, Owen had been at school but Anao hadn't been feeling well so it was just her me and Rekha in the house. I'd left the two of them alone for a minute to go change over the laundry when I hear Rekha crying and it wasn't his typical , I'm hungry or I need to be changed cry.

When I got back to the living room there was Rekha in his playpen and Anao curled up on the couch a strange vortex flashing in her amber eyes and and golden almost ethereal glow about her. She was talking to herself but I couldn't make out the words.

When the glow them and her eyes she she unfurled from her position and I could see the difference in her. she was longer then before, the chubby toddler cheeks she's once had had were gone and her hair had lengthened as well.

The entire family is currently adjusting to the situation though Anao is having the hardest time getting used to her new body. Still it's reassuring, it has been a long time since she last grew and I was worried I'd not been taking appropriate care of her enough to stimulate growth. Now I can rest a bit easier.

Things have gotten hectic and stressful lately. Having Anao older has helped in some aspects but she can;t control everything. Like how the radio and t.v is flooded with Christmas songs and special ,which will apparently only get worse in the next few weeks. Stores are filled with decorations for the upcoming holiday with Halloween just a distant memory.

Parades are shown on t.v and all sorts of commercials and advertisements for toys and products that every child must want. As of yet Owen seems mostly uninterested in Christmas but i have told himto make a list of thigns he would like. this had lead to papers being strewn about the living room while he looks for items to put on his list.

Figuring out how to exactly explain and do this holiday has been awkward, to what level should we celebrate it and in what manner. I still haven't gotten everything worked out but I have some ideas.

Anao has a list a mile long of things she wants and a secret list of what she wants to buy others. That is another hassle. holiday shopping , every aspect of it from crowded stores to price changes and hiding gifts and decorations is becoming more trouble that it's worth.

On top of that we're going to get a tree the start of the next month. picking the right one and decorating it is going to be something of a challenge.

Still, things aren't all bad. Anao is adapting to her bigger body and has taken up doing a lot of chores ( though she expects an allowance that equals her efforts as opposed to a flat rate). She's also taken to watching Rekha and playing with him when i'm busy with housework or helping Owen with his school stuff.

I'm working hard to spend time alone with all my children but it's not easily. perhaps the togeatherness the holiday season promotes will make up for that.

Bedtime

Owen lay in bed and stared at the ceiling, he was trying to sleep but couldn't, not with the sound of his brother constantly fidgeting and fussing over in his crib. Owen liked Rekha most of the time but when he was trying to sleep and the other wasn't it tested the young Eden's patience.

Owen liked his sleep and he demanded a certain amount of it otherwise he got cranky. Not that he fully blamed Rekha, Marcy a girl at school had baby sis ter she shared a room with and she said babies were just like that, that they couldn't help it if they were or weren't tired at the right times. Plus babies needed less sleep or something which made little sense since Rekha often seemed to sleep all the time during the day. Still as Owen turned his head and looked at Rekha he wished that his brother would be different than most babies.

As if aware of the thoughts and attention Rekha rolled over again to stare at Owen. Green eyed locked with brown and for a moment there was silence. It was broken was a happy burble at Rekha smiled through the darkness at Owen before rolling away again.

Owen wasn't one hundred percent sure what had happened but he had felt. something for a moment there. Clearly Rekha had as well as the young baby was now nearly silent as he fitfully tried to sleep.

Not one to question things Owen just smiled at his brothers back before closing his eyes and letting long awaited sleep overtake him.

Happy Holidays

Pash sat on the couch and watched as his normally neat living room turned into a warzone. Paper and plastic flew everywhere, cardboard was ripped to threads and bubble wrap was burst loudly. All of this in Owen and Anao's effort to get to their presents as fast as possible Pash was pretty positive they'd lost the message of the season as the glee in their eyes was greater now than it had been at any point yet during the holidays.

Rekha, too young to really understand what was going on was cradled in his arms playing with a kangaroo plushie Pash had got him. the plush had a pouch that the boys egg fit it which allowed Rekha to snuggle something soft and keep his most precious item with him at the same time. Not as fancy as present as what the older children got but practical and reasonable for an infant.

Anao squealed a bit as she unwrapped two additional discs for the kareoke system Pash had bought earlier in the year. The young redheaded girl loved to sing, she wasn't the best at it but she did it often and it seemed to amuse her and her brothers.

Slate colored eyes narrowed and then widened as Owen turned a camera over in his hands slowly. He looked up at Pash curiously , clearly uncertain of what to make of the gift.

Pash just smiled " I'll teach you how to use it later" the Camera was one of the child safe ones, it could be dropped, be spilled on and carried everywhere without breaking. Still Owen was young and he'd need instruction on how to use it. Pash could use that instruction time to spend private time with his eldest son. The man still found it hard to divvy up his time well so this was his best way of ensuring that all his children got equal time.

The day wore on and by the end if it the living room was a sea of wrapping paper. All the children ended up in holiday outfits bought for them by Kishi and after a few bouts of sugar induced hyperactivity they had all settled down. A dvd had been popped in and the family huddled together on the couch watching the antics of a pair of animated fuzzy creatures.

There is a letter and package in the mail with Owen's name on it.

the letter
Hi, Owen! It's Shouko! You know what's fun? Planting things! I've got a greenhouse here at HQ that's just begging for someone to come along and make it actually green! So why don't you and your dad pick out some seeds, stop by, and make it bloom? There's a key in the package!

I look forward to hearing from you!

-Shouko

Growth Quest! Please buy seeds, visit the greenhouse, and plant a garden! This quest should be between two and five posts and 800 and 2000 words.

Growth quest part 1

Owen was sitting on the couch with the camera he had gotten for Christmas, the young rabbit Eden was trying to take a picture of his brother Rekha sleeping in his playpen. He wasn't very good at taking pictures yet and while his camera wasn't overly complicated it was still a bit beyond the toddler's grasp. He was able to grasp the concept of point and shoot and most of his pictures didn't come out horrid but they weren't as good as other's he'd seen and some were just blurs.

One light brown thumb was bout to press down on the shutter button when his father walked into the room.” Owen, you have mail from from someone named Shouko at the headquarters.”

Deciding that mail was more interesting than a picture of the nearly motionless Rekha, Owen released his grip on the camera and let it hang from his neck his chest and rest on his chest. Curious as to why anyone would be sending him mail he took the package and letter carefully from his father.
Dark eyes scanned the letter slowly, fortunately for the boy there were no particularly hard words within it.

After reading the letter Owen opened the package to find a small brass key that was presumably going to let him into the greenhouse at Headquarters. The young boy liked the idea of being entrusted with a key but he wasn't really thrilled at the idea of gardening. Gardens required working in the dirt and while Owen had no problems sitting on or eating the grass that grew from the dirt he had no real desire to dig in it.

“ Well now that sounds nice, we can go to the local greenhouse tomorrow and pick out some nice seeds and plants, maybe even some vegetables you can replant in spring so you can eat them in the summer.” Owen looked up to see his father looking down at where he had lain the letter on the couch. The boy supposed that if his father thought it was a good idea he might as well try it and he did like the idea of growing things to eat. He still didn't look forward to the work or dirt aspect but sometimes you had to do stuff you didn't want to to get something in return.

Plus , he thought, starting to grin he could take stuff he'd grown into school for show and tell day. As he placed the brass key in his father's hand for safe keeping Owen began to think that perhaps gardening wouldn't be so bad after all.

Quest part two.

Owen swatted at a fly as he carefully tread the rows of plants at the local green house. His father had brought him here to pick out both young plants and seeds to plant in the Eden project's Greenhouse at headquarters. However, the young rabbit Eden couldn't really see over the tables and was mostly looking up to see shoots and blossoms and judging his opinions on that. Not that Owen really had a fondness for flowers unless they were for eating or taking pictures of. He really did like to take pictures of them as well as everything else that was immobile since he had a hard enough time keeping his hands still never mind his subject's bodies.

Still, Owen wasn't really the type to go a plant a garden and if it hadn't been for this Shouko asking him to he probably wouldn't have. Although he did like the ideas of being to grow his own food. Though he'd have to get driven to the headquarters to eat it, still he would have grown it himself and he got to pick what it was. The ability to have choices was highly motivating for one so young.

As the misters for the plants turned on Owen squealed and darted back to the safety of the paved walkway that ran through the entire greenhouse. That was it , he was wet and smelled liked dirt, Owen wanted to go home right now. As he ran a sleeve over one ear to dry it he spotted his father who was still examining some plants nearby and ignoring the fine mist that sprayed down on them. Owen knew that if he wasn't bothered the boy would not be getting to go home until his task was complete.

In the end he walked out of the greenhouse with a bag full small packets of seeds while his father carried two trays of seedlings. Owen's bag contained seeds for tomatoes, broccoli, cucumber, peas , lettuce, and dill all of which could be started indoors in the garden during this frosty spring since they'd be protected.

The trays his father had contained what would be Peonies and Pansies, Owen considered them suitable flowers according the tags that showed what they would grow into. They weren't edible but they were sorta pretty with nice patterns. They reminded him of the hair of the bossy girls he knew. Still, Owen was satisfied with what he'd picked even if it had taken forever and he was dirty now. As soon as he was home the rabbit Eden was taking a bath, much like he planned too after he had to plant all the flowers and vegetables.

Quest part 3 Preparation

Owen slid the brass key into the door of the greenhouse, turned it and smiled with he heard the lock click open. He pushed the door open and walked into the greenhouse sun peeks through the glass roof in some spots, in other snow had yet to slide off it's slanted sides. From what Owen could see the place really did need some attention. It wasn't dirty but it smelled a bit musty and what plant life still existed there had long since withered and died.

With his father following behind him with the stuff Owen ventured deeper into the green house until he found a large clear space on the concrete floor. The tables were a bit high up for the rabbit boy to use and he might as well spill dirt on the floor while planting rather then on the table and have to sweep it onto the floor for cleaning up later. Not that the clean obsessed boy had any real desire to be on the floor surrounded by dirt. It couldn't be helped though and as he'd seen earlier this place was so lonely and bland it needed him to do something with it.

Owen pushed his long ears over his shoulders and out of the way as sat down on the floor and reached into a bag that his father had placed beside him before heading back out of the greenhouse to grab the seedlings he'd left in the car. Owen pulled out a packet of cabbage seeds from the bag and read the instructions for them. Before doing anything he needed to know how much dirt the seeds would need to grow and how much would be too much.

Nibbling on his lower the lip Owen reached for one of the black trays he was using to plant the seeds in. Carefully he opened a bag of potting soil and poured it into the tray using his fingers as a measuring guide like the directions on the packet had told him to. He disliked getting his fingers dirty but he had to admit that the smell of the potting soil that accompanied the dirt on them was pleasant.

Charcoal eyes watched carefully as the young boy repeated the process with several more trays. Owen thought it would be easier to get all the trays ready first and then just drop the seeds into their respective whole while his father covered them and then Owen made a second round with the watering can. For now though Owen was content to just to poke holes in dirt.

Quest part 4 , the end.

Owen had thought gardening was going to be easy, he found out very quickly that he was wrong. not all the seeds could just be dropped into the trays, some had to be placed certain ways and this lead to lots of bending over then straighting repetitively until the planting was done. This made Owen wonder if inside gardening was hard how hard would it be to do outdoors after the snow melted. The young Eden wasn't lazy persey he just preffered to be sedentary, most of the time.

Now he lugged a half filled green watering can over to the row of trays where his father had just finished covering the seeds he'd planted. The water was heavy but Owen had to do the job, his father would only help so much. He'd said something about feeling prouder of the plants later becuase he'd done most of the work. For now the boy just took his father's word for it.

Carefully he tilted the jug so that tiny streams of water poured out of a long thin spout at the end. He had to be certain not to soak the water in the trays too much or the seeds would die. but he needed to give them enough so they could grow and not get too thirsty untill he could get here again. it was a very delicate procedure and Owen was greatful when his father stepped in to help steady his small hands. Though he wanted to be able to do this he was still to small to work alone.

Ten minutes later found Owen sweeping up spilled dirt while his father put the freshly watered trays onto the tables, they'd have to bring a stool next time for him to stand on. For now though he swept the dirt out of the greenhouse , the last part of the planting task he had to complete.

Once it was done he surveyed the green house a final time. It didn't look much different yet but there was hope for it now. It would take a lot of work but Owen could make the place green again.

Owen is so tired from the day's activities that he falls into a dreamless sleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. He is far too exhausted to think about what will be growing in his garden, but for tonight he's got some growing to do for himself.

January 26 2008.

Time to grow up

Nothing can remain the same forever, for too live, to truly exist all things must change. This change can be undergone purposefully, voluntarily and even without notice but the fact remains that in time all things must change.

In this case change went for the most part unobserved. With his father napping Rekha was in his crib and was also supposed to be sleeping. However, it was very hard to do that when when your most precious treasure was falling apart. His dark green eyes were focused intently on the egg in his hands.

Dark crack lines were appearing in it's shell and heat seemed to pulse from it like never before. Rekha wasn't sure what was happening but he was too focused to utter any cries of confusion or distress. Instead he simply held the egg tiger and hoped that nothing bad was happening, he didn't know why but Rekha was deeply attached to this egg.

Suddenly the top half of the Grey shell broke off the rest of the egg and out popped the head of a small pure white kitten. It's yellow eyes locked onto Rekha's and as he stared into them the infant felt a surge of something familiar.

Moments passed and while neither Kitten for child moved there was an air of change about them. It would only be later that Rekha would realize that it was larger and stronger hands with which he held the kitten and that it was with a clearer and more eager to learn mind that he made these realizations.

Pash was in the midst of changing a squirming Rekha's diaper, potty training was going to begin as soon as the green haired man could find time to go out and buy one because as a toddler it was time for Rekha to learn, when the front door opened and he heard Anao shout “ Hey dad there's a baby in a basket on the porch with a note. She doesn't look too cold but she's squirming and fussing.”

Pash paused for a moment confused, a baby was left on his doorstep? Who in their right mind left a child out in this weather and why him of all people. He had just oped his mouth when his daughter walked into the living room followed by the newly older Owen who held the dark wicker basket carefully as if it were as fragile as the egg Rekha's feline companion had come in.

Jarred out of his funk Pash finished changing Rekha and let the annoyed boy roll away while he stood and approached Owen. Taking a deep breath the guardian angel peered inside.

January 30th, 2007

I do not know what my bosses want with me but I hope I can appease them soon because I fear I'm being taxed to my limit. While it was encouraging to have both Owen and Rekha grow withing days of each other it is also confusing and taxing financially. Certainly Rekha can wear some of Owen's cast off but they will need to be altered but Owen needs new clothing now as well as new school stuff , books and toys.

On top of this I have gained another child a small girl named Connor was left in my care today. Anao of course is thrilled she's wanted a sister for a while and I think she sees the stress I'm under since she's been keeping Rekha occupied all day while doing cleaning beyond her normal chores.

The girl, Connor is a sweet little thing with light grey hair, a green right eye and silver left one. She's been quiet so far but I think she's under some stress too. At least I still have all of Rekha's and Anao's old baby stuff for her, though I'll be moving the crib into my room so I can keep an eye on her at night. There's a lot of adjusting to be done though and things aren't going to be easy. Perhaps it's time to reach out to others. Tek has been missing for years but I have a few other friends who may be able to help me because I do not think I can do this alone.
