"Put it down Covet."
Mecca stood in the doorway of the shop watching her. His eyes bleary and his clothes crumpled from his sleep. He should have gotten rid of the thing as soon as he had captured it. But no, his curiosity forced him to keep it and now it had done something to Covet.
"Covet, why do you want it?" He asked, trying a different approach.

Her eyes opened slowly at the order, but she made no move to obey. Clutching the box tighter, as if afraid he would take it from her, she swallowed hard and slowly looked up at him at his question.
"I don't want it, I need it," she replied, her chest rising and falling in short measured bursts. "Please Mecca... open the box," she requested holding the box a little ways away from herself, but still holding to it tightly. "I need to hear it."

"Why do you need to hear it Covet? Why would it make a difference?" He asked as he watched her carefully. "I won't open it until you tell me. We both know how powerful that magic is."

A slight darkness shadowed her eyes as her request was brushed aside for more questions. Didn't he understand? She needed to hear it. That should have been reason enough. Lowering the box away from him again, a cold smirk slipped across her lips.
"I can't remember the words. Perhaps they'll tell you how to heal me," she said. "I'll be safe. You're right here beside me and you saved me before," she said charmingly.

"Do you think I stepped off of the last boat from Gathriel?" He said, growing exceedingly weary of her behavior. Marching forwards he yanked the box from her hands and glared down at her.
"I saved you before and almost killed myself." He said turning to march out into the street. "I'm taking this to the docks and destroying it. Then I'm taking you to a sage or a priest to be exorcised."

"No! Me-chan don't!" she cried out and ran after him to catch him by his arm. "You can't. I'm too far gone. I'm too... connected," she pleaded. She quickly stepped in front of him and put her hands on his arms as she looked directly up into his eye.
"You can't destroy it. That's what it wants you to do," she said, her eyes and mind clear for the moment. "Please Me-chan... I know you don't want to, but open the box. I won't touch it. I swear, but you need to open the box."

"I don't know." He said, looking at her with caution. "What if it takes over you. I can't control it Covet, it is too powerful." He said clutching the box to his chest.
Taking a deep breath he placed it on the path between them and looked down at it.
"How do I know you are not tricking me Covet. THis has bewitched your mind. I cannot believe you."

"You have to Mecca. You don't have a choice. You have to believe me. I need help!" she cried out, then blinked and put a hand over her mouth. Why now? Why now when he was so close to opening the box was she finally able to say it? Looking down at the box on the ground between them she took a couple of steps back and slowly sank down to the ground, her hands over her ears. She was so confused.
"Mecca..." she said softly. "Make it stop."
