MysteryCross What about The Perfect Circle??? [kinda weird that no one has mentioned them yet... 0o?!] I totally agree with Depeche Mode and some others like Birthday Massacre.... A Perfect Circle is experimental rock, though, they also have some alternative metal and electronica influences. Depeche Mode (for clarification) started off as a new-wave synth-pop group, though, as their career went on, they grew darker and became a darkwave* band. The Birthday Massacre can also be referred to as darkwave*, though, they (in certain songs) show elements of hard-rock. *Darkwave: A dark style of electronica started in the early 80's as opposition to synth-pop, whereas goth-rock was such a similar opposition to new-wave.

I believe that band is considered emo, not goth. ..when we wandered through the rain They aren't emo either (emo = Rites of Spring). They're post-hardcore, though, one could argue that they're just generally pop-rock.

With most of the early goth stuff, they weren't really that hardcore.
Most of the bands that people think are goth are metal based, whereas goth originated from punk, glam rock and post punk.
Major difference between goth and metal.
None of the early goth stuff was close to sounding like Motorhead or Iron Maidan which were around at the same time.
Metal is the antithesis of Goth.

GilAskan "Goth band" is different than "goth rock band". A goth band is a band of goths, while a goth-rock band is one which preforms the goth-rock genre of music. With this said, it can't be debated what bands are goth-rock or not, though, one could debate whether or not the band itself is goth. Goth-rock bands (examples):Bauhaus Joy Division The Cure Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees The Damned Christian Death Sisters of Mercy The Mission UK The Church New Model Army Fields of Nephilim Bands Commonly Called Goth-rock, but are not Goth-rock (examples):EvanescenceMarilyn MansonkoRn ToolSlipknot My Chemical Romance Aiden Rammstein A Perfect Circle AFIBlack Sabbath Cradle of Filth Nightwish Nine Inch NailsGood list. 3nodding
Even though they aren't considered Goth-rock bands. The ones in Red I like anyways.

I was about to use Alien Sex Fiend as an example, but then again, they are more psychobilly (the cross of gothic rock and rockabilly) so I guess they don't quite count in this thread sweatdrop

They're commonly listed amongst goth-rock bands because they were so popular in the early goth scene. However, as you said, they had quite a bit of psychobilly work. Also, most of what got them popular in the goth scene was early Industrial.

a goth band would be like evenessance where a gothic band is BLOOD(theyre on vampirefreaks,they sound almost oprah-ish)
goth-rock is close to metal

Nu-metal (or any genre of metal in general) has no relation to goth-rock. Nu-metal is not a sub genre of metal it is a sub genre in which the media classifies false matal. Nu-metal is a sub genre of rock which holds such bands as Korn and Slipknot and Linkoln Park.

Hm well the Cure isn't all goth, they switch up their music often, like siouxsie and the banshees.
And I'd say something similar for the Damned.
And Christian Death is way better described as Death Rock.
The rest of the bands I either am not too familiar with or are gothish enough XP.
Clan of Xymox is another decent example of goth rock.
