Ryuk walked over to his shelter, bending down, and looking through his pack. He needed his flint to start the fire. After a few minutes of searching, Ryuk pulled out the small black rock. "There you are." He said. He closed the pack up and got up, walking back over to the fire pit, grabbing the other rock he had used to cut his left hand, and was about to click the two rocks together, making a spark, when he realized something very important. "I don't have any wood..." He said. Ryuk put the rocks down and got up, planning on looking for wood. He left the camp, in search of good wood. On his way, he found some moss, which he could use as a fuel for the fire. After a few minutes of searching, Ryuk found several logs that looked dry. He picked them up and brought them to the camp. He put one on the ground, the cut ends facing up. Ryuk closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. He exhaled, opening his eyes and swinging his hand at the log. It split slightly and Ryuk smiled. He then used his dagger to break it all the way through. He repeated the process several times, until he had cut each log into four parts. He then stacked the logs, putting the moss at the bottom and inbetween the logs.

Ryuk looked down at his fire pit and was proud, now all he needed as to make an ember with his flint and start the fire so he could cook his snake. "Now... Where's my flint?" He asked himself. What he didn't know, was that when he carried the logs over, he had kicked the rocks, sending them flying over the ground into the bushes, lost forever. After several minutes minutes of searching, he couldn't find it. He let out a sigh and plopped down onto his knees, looking at the fire pit, hoping it would catch flame. It was then that Ryuk remembered something. He moaned and slapped his forehead, creating a red hand impression when he removed it. He slowly got up, stretching his back and cracking it. He then closed his eyes. He spread his feet slowly until they were almost two feet apart. He brought his hand together upside down, the finger tips touching each other. He took in a deep breath and he slowly raised his hands as his lungs filled with lungs. Once his lungs were at full capacity, he exhaled, his hands moving out with his breath. He opened his eyes and smiled. "I'm a Firebender." He said, almost laughing.

Ryuk rubbed the back of his head, chuckling slightly at his own stupidity. He hadn't used Firebending in a few months, and had nearly forgotten he was able to, amazingly. He growled slightly, knowing all his years of training had literally been erased from his memory. "I guess I'll have to retrain myself..." He said to himself, moaning. Ryuk sighed, his shoulders dropping, but he knew he had to do it. For his mom. Ryuk's hand clenched into a fist before Ryuk let out a deep breath, calming himself and unfurling his hand. He took in a deep breath and repeated the breathing exercise he had done a few moments before. He spread his legs, until they were close to two feet apart. He then brought his hands, that were upside down, up towards his chin and he inhaled. He then exhaled, pushing away with his hands. He then took in another breath, pulling his right hand back in a claw. He exhaled sharply ad he threw his hand forward, his pointer and middle fingers extended. From the end of his fingers shot a bolt of fire, which hit the fire pit and exploded with life as the red and orange flames danced along the wood and grew, feeding on the moss and logs. Ryuk looked at the fire, smiling. He had always like the appearance of fire.

Ryuk stared into the fire, watching the brilliant colors of red, orange, yellow, and a slight hue of blue dance around, crackling and sizzling as it slowly ate away at the wood that fed it it's fuel. "Brings back memories..." He said in a low, and almost sad voice. He just kept watching the fire, creating figures in his mind that jumped, danced, and fought in the blaze. Looking at it, it made him wonder what the first Firebender was. Was he noble and full of good intentions, or was he evil, and plotted mischievous deeds? He often wondered that, but he knew he would never get an answer. He held out his hand to the flame, the warmth felt good on his skin as it grew hotter and hotter until Ryuk was forced to pull his hand back a little. He just kept on staring at the fire, his eyes moving where the fire moved, watching it sway left and right, up and down, and any other direction it went. But, his eyes weren't following the fire. The fire was following his eyes. He used one of the basic Firebending arts and manipulated the flames, making them dance in whichever way he pleased. Suddenly, Ryuk snapped out of the gazing when the fire bursted, growing in size. Ryuk shook his head, truly awakening and grabbing the pieces of snake, jabbing to thin sticks into the meat and sticking them close to the fire to cook.

As the heat of the flames slowly cooked the sliced snake, Ryuk slowly fell back, his hands cushioning his head as he looked up at the sky. "Has it really been two years?" He asked himself. Ryuk had left the Fire Nation Military two years ago, after watching as his squad killed, no, slaughtered an entire village just because they suspected them to be rebels. The thought of this brought back memories of when he had found out his mother had been killed for hiding rebels, which he knew was a lie. "She wouldn't do such a thing. She believed in the Fire Nation, and in the Fire Lord. How could they do something like that?!" He yelled, slamming his fist into the ground. The force of the punch left an indent on the ground. He looked up at the sky, but the smell of something burning brought him back. He quickly got up and flipped the snake-ca-bobs around, before they became black. "Close..." He said, returning to his normal self. Suddenly, Ryuk heard a snap from nearby bushes and spun around, getting on his feet and crouching low. He stared at the bushes silently, watching for movement.

Ryuk continued to stand low and perfectly still, not knowing what could be behind the bushes. He should have known the smell of cooking meat would have attracted predators, but Ryuk had been lazy. He slowly took a step forward, trying to make his way towards his spear. He heard more movement from behind and silently spun around, his eyes scanning everywhere. "What is it?" He whispered to himself. He took several steps backwards, trying to make it to his spear so he could have type of defense against the animal. He didn't want to use Firebending because he didn't want to kill it unless he had to. And he had made a promise to himself not to Firebend unless he absolutely had to. He heard another snap and spun around, seeing a three or four foot blur fly between bushes. He smiled to himself. "It must be some type of mammal, or a large lizard..." He said, though, he could be wrong. Creatures in the Earth Kingdom were larger then that of the ones in the Fire Nation, he had learned that on several occasions the hard way. As he thought about what it could be, he kept moving towards the spear. He was about seven feet away from it when he heard a large snap right infront of him, causing him to stop in place.

As Ryuk stood there, he heard several more snaps and thuds as more of them ran towards the loud snap. "Great, there's more then one..." He whispered. The more he heard the noise, the less and less it sounded like a mammal. It didn't sound like running. It sounded more like a light slithering, with the occasional thud of a leg. "What the hell is it?" He asked himself. He was almost positive that what ever was circling his camp, definitely wasn't a mammal. He heard another large crack and spun around in the direction of the noise. He heard it again and spun around, trying to see what it was. He saw another flash, but he got a better view. It wasn't grey, it was almost purple. And it was only two feet long. He swore to himself. Either there were two things circling him, or it was larger then he thought. Either way, things weren't looking good. Ryuk swore under his breath. He knew he couldn't escape, so he stood up and got into a fighting stance. His feet were parted. His left foot forward and his right leg a little bit behind him an to the side, his left foot pointing to the side. His hands were in claw like flat palms, the pointer and middle finger sticking up a bit. His left hand was beyond his head while his right was next to his head.

Ryuk stood ready for anything, for all he knew, it could be anything. He heard the noise again and recognized it. It wasn't slithering, or running. It was scuttling. He heard it circle him several times, letting off a loud clicking noise every few seconds. Ryuk guessed it was using some type of echolocation to check him out. Suddenly, the noises stopped, and all was dead silent. This sent a shiver up Ryuk's spine as he stood, exposed, in the middle of his camp. He held his fighting stance, his feet apart and bent, his arms clawed and ready to strike. He gulped, the silence an eire and peaceful tomb that seemed to smothered his senses. Ryuk closed his eyes and took in a deep breath, his chest filling with air. He opened all his senses, trying to heighten his sense of hearing. He just stood there, trying to listen for the creature that was hunting him. After several minutes of absolute silence, his ears were beginning to adapt to the slight sounds of scurrying legs and rubbing body parts. He just kept listening, trying to figure out what it was doing. What is it doing? He wondered to himself. I can't hear it. He finished, straining his ears to hear the beast. For something so large, how does it make no noise? He asked himself, tense from standing in one spot for so long.

Ryuk stood there, his eyes closed, his ears perked, and his body tensed. He had sacrificed one sense to heighten another, as his teacher used to say. By closing his eyes and not seeing, his other senses were heightened slightly. Even though the change was small, it definitely helped. He just listened to the slight rustle, clicking, and tapping of the creature, all the while wondering what it was. He ran several animals through his mind that he had seen on his travels, but none were like this one. He mentally sighed, knowing he had little chance of figuring out a weakness to a creature he had never seen. He was jerked out of his thoughts when he heard the creature start to move again. He quickly opened his eyes, the bright light searing his retinas, but he kept looking trying to spot the creature. What's it doing? He asked himself. Suddenly, the creature launched out of the bushed infront of him into the air. Ryuk stared at it, his jaw dropped, and his eyes wide. "It's-it's!" He stuttered. Ryuk was unable to create a sentence. He was amazed at what the creature was. "It's a Giant Centipede!" He yelled.

The centipede was atleast fifteen feet long. It was a dark red with a purple glow and had several body segments, each looked like polished armor. It had atleast a hundred legs, all sharp. And it's head had two large eyes, two antenna, and two large pincers the length of Ryuk's lower arm. Ryuk stared at the creature with a mixture o fear, shock, and amazement. He slowly realized it was falling, but his body wouldn't move. He just stood there, watching as the insect grew bigger and bigger. Suddenly, his mind yelled at him. Move you moron! It yelled. Ryuk snapped out of his state of shock and leaped with all his might to the left to avoid the centipede. He flew several feet because the force of the insect landing created a small shockwave. Ryuk flew through the air, moving quite fast. He threw his hand into the ground, stopping him. He landed on his feet and pulled his hand out of the ground and got into the fighting position he was holding before it attacked. The centipede recovered from the fall and looked at Ryuk, letting out an ear shattering screech that made Ryuk want to cover his ears. Ryuk found this ironic. When he was first setting camp, he had considered eating insects. Now, an insect might eat him.

Ryuk stared at the centipede, not sure what it was able to do. For all he knew, it could spit acid or something like that. Ryuk sighed, wishing he had never came to the forest in the first place, but he knew wishing would solve his current problem. He got more comfortable in his fighting stance and stood ready for an attack by the large centipede. "It doesn't matter how big you are, you're just a bug." Ryuk said, smiling. He was somewhat happy that the centipede had attacked. It gave him something to do in an otherwise boring forest. Ryuk tilted his neck, cracking it, then looked up at the insect. "Come on, mister hissy-face." He said, mocking the centipede. He knew it couldn't understand him, but it made him feel better. The centipede looked at him, hunching back, ready to strike. Ryuk stood ready. It launched itself at Ryuk with his speeds. Ryuk jumped off the ground, narrowly avoiding the large insect. He lifted and spread his legs, the creature's head and body shooting under it. He used his hand and flipped around, pushing himself off the insect's head and sending him soaring over it. Ryuk landed on his hands and flipped over onto his feet, spinning around to face the creature.

Ryuk had landed almost perfectly, and got up, watching the centipede crash into some trees. The centipede quickly recovered from crash and curled up, arching back again for another strike. Ryuk had just happened to look past the centipede, looking at the trees it had landed on. The area had broken sticks and shredded leaves on the ground, as well as... Ropes. Ryuk's eye twitched with anger as he realized what the centipede had landed on. His hands tightened into fists as he swelled with anger. A scowl slowly covered Ryuk's face as he took a step forward. He took in a deep breath, glaring at the large insect. "You crushed my shelter you b*****d bug!" He yelled with all his might. Ryuk gritted his teeth and swung an arm out infront of him out of anger. He then bolted off at the centipede, ready to punch the ting until with was a pulp. The centipede hissed at him, swinging it's tail at him when he was in range. Ryuk jumped over the swiping tail, his knees bent up to his chin. The centipede quickly pulled back it's tail and swung it again. "Crap!" He yelled. Ryuk was caught by the tail, sending him flying through the air and hitting into a tree. The impact caused the air to rush out of Ryuk, making him gasp for air.

Ryuk slowly slid down the tree until he fell off onto his hands and knees. He was coughing violently, trying to get oxygen into his lungs. He held his neck, a reflex he had when he couldn't breath. After several moments of coughing, he had calmed his breathing and blocked out the pain of the strike. He rubbed his stomach slightly, then looked up at the insect, which was clicking and hissing angrily at him. He brushed some dirt off of his clothes and growled at the centipede slightly. "This is why I hate giant insects." He started. Ryuk kicked the front of his shoe into the ground three times, then started running at the centipede. "They just don't die." He finished. Ryuk charged at the insect, running back and forth to confuse the bug. The centipede followed Ryuk's movements with a swaying head. It swung it's tail at him again. Ryuk jumped up, spinning in a tight ball, avoiding it. After he dodges the swipe, he unfurled and landed on his feet. He kept moving, running up the centipede's back and reach the back of the head. He threw his arm back, gathering strength for a punch, then unleashed a powerful strike to the back of the insect's head.

Ryuk's punch successfully connected with the centipede's head. But, what he didn't expect, was that the thing's skin was as hard as metal. He winced in pain as he felt his fingers go numb. He pulled back his hand, putting pressure on it and holding it tight. the centipede grew angry and shook it's head, making Ryuk lose his balance and fall off. The centipede then swung it's tail at him, planning on crushing him straight down into the earth. Ryuk saw the tail coming and grabbed it, spinning around and kicking off it, avoiding the impact. He landed several feet away. He grabbed his hand, flexing his fingers. "That wasn't a good idea..." He said to himself. Ryuk brought his hand up to his face, curling it into a fist and releasing it. His hand hurt, but it was nothing he couldn't stand. "Great, now both my hands are injured." He told himself. The centipede pulled it's tail out of the ground and hissed at Ryuk. It was then, that Ryuk noticed fleshy areas between the armored segments. The centipede launched itself at Ryuk again, just as Ryuk started running at it. He lifted his legs and ran right over it's head. He grabbed onto one of the segments to keep from falling off and pulled his arm back again, going for another punch.

Ryuk pulled his arm back again, gathering strength in that arm. once he felt he had enough energy behind it. He swung down at the fleshy area between the armored segments of the large centipede. He caught the area he was looking for and his hand cut through the skin, into the warm, moist area. He quickly pulled his hand out, revealing his hand covered in a strong smelling orange liquid, which he guessed was it's blood. The creature screeched in pain and spun around, trying to shake Ryuk off. After several violent jerks, Ryuk was flung off it's back. he hit the ground and tumbled several times before sliding to a stop by the small river. He saw it and quickly plunged his hand into the knee deep water, cleaning off his blood covered hand. He pulled it out once it was blood free and shook it, getting off the water. He then faced the enraged centipede, which was constantly screaming. Ryuk ran at it again, hoping he could get in a few more shots to where he had just punched it. The centipede saw him coming and arched back. Ryuk kept running. The centipede waited until Ryuk was within range and shot it's head at him. Ryuk sidestepped the attack and ran under the insect. He found the spot where he had hit and spun around, using his hand to keep himself up and kicked with all his might at the under part of the flesh.
