"Oh, they all live in the house!" Ren explained. "There are boys too, but they don't count. Besides all them, we don't know many other people. Because we don't get out so much." Of course, Ren wanted to get out more, but she couldn't say that. Because then Linnea would get sad, and it would be all her fault.

Then she frowned, listening to Evie's daddy, and looked up at Linnea. "Wait! Is something wrong?"

Linnea looked down, but even with her hair in the way, it was easy to see that her face was slightly pink. "Just... warm," she whispered, looking around for her water bottle. She had to have one somewhere, she never left the house without one. "Where is it?"

Frowning more, Jack quickly paid for the purchases, tucked them in a bag which he then slipped over his wrist, and gently touched Linnea's shoulder. Since the other hand was busy holding Evie, the bag brushed against her shoulder. "C'mon," he murmured quietly. "Let's get you outside. There's a bench out there, I reckon. You can have a seat."

Eyes wide, Evie bit her lower lip and squeezed her hands against the rim of her cup. "It's okay, Miss Linnea," she offered encouragingly. "You can do it!"

Somewhat dizzy, Linnea let herself be led outside. Maybe she had left her water out there, somehow, or maybe she would be able to buy some more. In any event, it had to be better than being kept in a cramped, stuffy store.

Ren chewed her lip anxiously. "I think she's hot," she suggested, trying to remember what Linnea did when this happened. "She needs to drink lots of water. At least, I think so."

It was a worrisome situation, but it looked like Mr. Evie's Dad had everything under control, and Evie was helping too. If they were both there, then nothing really bad would happen. Relieved, Ren put her hands together like she had seen Linnea do before, and bowed slightly. "Thanks for helping, Mr. Evie's Dad!"

"Of course, pet." Gently, Jack helped Linnea to a seat, frowning in concern. Then he glanced at Ren. "Water, you said?" He gave a moment to consider things and then he set down Evie's cup on the bench. "Evie, help Ren take care o' Linnea. I'll be right back with some water."

Even as Evie saluted solemnly, Jack was halfway to the little cafe across the street, wallet slipping from his pocket as he walked. Evie turned to her new friends and stretched out a hand to touch Linnea's sleeve. "It'll be okay," she announced. "Daddy'll fix it."

It was all so embarassing, but Linnea was too fogged up to do much about it. All she could really do was sit and wait until her head started to clear. She smiled though, and lightly brushed the tiny hand on her sleeve. "Th-thank you," she murmured, almost inaudible.

"Your daddy is so nice," Ren said when Jack had moved away. "There aren't any daddies at our house, so we don't know much about them. Well, except Mister Grumpypants, but he's still learning. Maybe your daddy could teach him how to be a good daddy."

At least Mister Grumpypants wasn't a bad daddy, but he wasn't especially nice either. "He always says to be quiet, but that's sooooo boring!"

Evie nodded heartily. "Very boring," she agreed. "I'm lucky to have Daddy, I know. He's the best. And I also have Shade and Brunswick and Miss Callisto. They're all so cool. None of them ever make me be quiet." She paused and truth got the better of her. She quickly added with a blush, "Except when it's bedtime because then you have to be quiet since people are trying to sleep." She looked up at Linnea with concern. "Are you okay, Miss Linnea? Don't worry. Daddy will be back really soon. He's fast!"

"Oh, there's not so boring people too," Ren insisted, gesturing with her arms. "Linnea's mommy is nice. And Ying and Yeine and the fun boy. But yeah, bedtime's supposed to be for sleepy people. Except I don't get sleepy, but I have to sleep anyway."

Taking a moment to catch her breath, Ren looked where Evie's dad had been. "It's lucky that we both know so many nice people, Evie."

Nodding, Linnea had one hand over her neck, but was trying to smile to put both of her small friends at ease. "I'm okay."

"And we're lucky that we all take care of each other, too," Evie declared with a smile. "We'll take care of each other, right, Ren? Miss Linnea? And... Ooo, here comes Daddy!" Pointing, she drew attention to the tall form of her father who was quickly striding back across the street with a bottle of water in hand.

Jack reached them in no time and crouched down in front of Linnea, studying her as he unscrewed the top of the bottle. Then he handed it over gingerly. "I don't know what you do with it, pet," he murmured. "It should be good an' cold, though. If you need a press, I've got a few napkins we can wet."
