(( Rolling... and it's 17. Oh, my! ))
Rascir took in what the others advised and thought on it. His colors seemed to get more and more vivid as he concentrated. It was neither anger, nor wild hunger, or greed that made him want to end the small rodent's life but overwhelming sympathy and pity. He wanted its soul to be free, free like the birds. Like him.
It was as though he took a deep breath and even his wings spanned out and it felt to flow even to the tips of his hair as he took on an expression totally unearthly and very unlike him. He picked it up in his hands and he looked into it. Deep into it, envisioning all its pain, its feelings of dread, discomfort... and death.
It fell unconscious.

Iamel stayed quiet when the other tried the first time.. failed. He knew the little bunting had to make it so he didn't feel guilty... "You can do it." The little one had murmured, glancing at the mouse once more... watching the little mouse.
"You did it!" The woodpecker squeaked out, hands clapping together. Luckily for him, his mouse was on the table. "You stopped it's pain but.." He leaned over, eyeing the thing, "It's still ther ebut you DID it! Yay Rascir!"

Diacyn watched as the mouse finally fell asleep. He was a little disappointed with the bunting's power- he'd been expecting explosions or fire or pirates or something! Not sleeping! But he could feel a little respect for the bird's talent. They couldn't all be loud and flashy.
"Hey, you did it!" he said, not unkindly, as he examined the snoring rodent. "What the crap kind of death is this? Sleeping sickness?" It was weird, but it was still good to know that the bunting was just like the rest of them, despite his annoying depressing attitude about it.
But now a new thought came to Diacyn- now, with Savius and Rascir experimenting, he was the only one in the room who hadn't done any magic! Fuming, he leaned back in his chair and glared at the wall. When his turn came, he was going to- well, he was going to do something. He wasn't completely sure what he could do.

Xaxis watched, curiously fascinted by what the bunting just accomplished. The rodent, which had been a squeaking mess of tangled fur and blood, was now quite firmly . . . not quite dead?
Asleep?
Death by . . . sleeping?
The raven tore his eyes from the rodent, looking up at the bunting curiously. Diacyn's words - be it a little harsh - summed up his own questions. What kind of death was that? Well, so long as it was death, what did it matter?
The excitement of Iamel and the others did rub off on the quiet boy. He flapped his wings (a bit awkwardly in his chair) and gave a little smile. "See? You killed it! Almost. Just like Savius almost killed it!"
Xaxis had been relieved to see the little bunting hesitate at his first attempt. The raven had yet to truly accomplish anything every time he'd played with his abilities. Maybe today (if he got a chance) he'd be able to do some real good. Maybe he could make one of the fuzzy mice sneeze!
Looking up at Shanuh, eyes wide, Xaxis quirked a brow. "So now what? Can the rest of us try? Who's next?" He was so anxious he was all but squirming in his seat.
Magic! Life would be so much cooler once they were able to play with magic.
Shanuh reached a hand down, picking up the small, sleeping rodent. "See Rascir? You've helped end his suffering, you've stopped the mouse from hurting. Fantastic job," he encouraged, genuinely pleased by the results. It would be interesting to see how the gentle bunting would respond to future classes and future tasks - he ultimtely might have to take life unwillingly.
"The mouse is sleeping, but Rascir's abilities extend much farther than comatose. Unlike many of you, whom use outside sources as a way to kill, Rascir's magic is more personal. His death is one of the more natural deaths, using the victem's body to turn against itself. He'll learn more abilities than comatose as he ages, but for now, yes - he puts them to sleep."
Still holding the mouse in his fingers, Shanuh couldn't help but smile at Xaxis' words. So the rest were anxious? "Well then - Iamel! Why don't you show us what you can do? Then Xaxis, then Diacyn, you can finish us up for the afternoon."
Hopefully, after today, more of them would start to use their abilities. This lesson was good at breaking them in, at showing them what they could accomplish.
Offering the mouse back to Savius - for it had been his rodent, had it not? - he'd let the boy dispose of it as he felt comfortable.
((Tag, Mr. Iamel - please blow things up, but NOT the whole building. ;P BTW - you DO get a +1 for your next roll. So whatever number you get, add one to it since Iamel has practiced/tried to use his magic in previous posts. Xaxis will get the same, since they're the only two who have tried before this class began. :3 ))

((Lesse what he rolls! XD I'm going with the old system of the rolls.. So technically, an eighteen. Woot!))
Iamel jolted when he heard his name called, blinking a little bit at Shanuh. But he had just SAID that he could only do things when he was mad! "Shanuh.." The woodpecker almost whined before scooping up his own mouse.
The white animal stared up at him, nose trembling in rodent fear. How could Iamel be mad at that? Cute things didn't inspire anger in him, did they?
His eyebrows arch, head tilting back with a little noise. He had to send his mind into a rage... He had to. He wouldn't let down shanuh and he would NOT let the others think he was a wussy.
Iamel squeezed his eyes shut, bringing to mind the things that DID make him angry. When Shiniee called Diacyn bad names. When Akilah stole his stuff.
When Shiniee left.
The woodpeckers eyes opened, vastly different from the hyper cuteness they had before. They were, true to his 'personality', dark and intense on Shanuh before they rested back down onto the mouse.
The animal started squeaking, fur fluffing up and wriggling around on Iamels palm. Squeak squeak squeak! Shiniee's leaving was still in his head, diluted from his return, but there it was, in his mind. Infuriating, hurting him.
His mouses fur went from white to black, puffing up in mini-explosions. The wanna-be Hiroshimas exploded over the animals body, no bigger then a matchstick head.
He was squeaking in horror as the skin under the fur bubbled and exploded as well - Iamel snapped out of it, eyes widening as he stared down at the animal he all but mutilated, the little thing falling limp in his hands with soft squeaks.
"....see. Only when I get mad." He whispered, eyes returning to the less intense, more childish movement.

Savius blinked at the bloody, unconcious fuzzy thing that had been put back in his keeping. So, it had left the pain behind in favor of a strange, coma like state. Good for Rascir. Glancing up at the boy, he offered an approving smile. He'd done what he believed he needed to do.
Brushing a finger lightly over its pale, rust stained fur, he held it firmly in hand, and efficently snapped its tiny neck. That done, he dropped the now dead mass of fur and bones into his pocket. He'd eat it later, for now, there was more to watch.
Iamel was up, and he seemed hesitant about the whole thing. Having already given all the words of wisdom he could think of, he just watched the boy, watched the brightness leave him in favor of a darker sort of light.
And then... exploding mouse. Anyway, exploding bits of mouse, and the thick scent of burning fur and flesh.
Awesome.

Xaxis couldn't supress his giggles as he watched in awe as Iamel gave proof to the power inside. The squeaking mouse was burning! It was exploding! "WOW~!" The raven squealed, squirming in his seat excitedly.
"Look at that, Iamel! You did it! You made it melt!" The mouse hadn't actually EXPLODED (persay) but it had caught on fire in his friends hands, and the mouse sure seemed terrified!
No, the boy wasn't turned off by the cruelness they were partaking in. To him, this was fun.
So far, Xaxis had been pleased. Everyone, even Rascir, had used their powers and all of them had had positive effects. Encouraged by his friends strengths, Xaxis knew that it would soon be his turn.
Part of the boy wished he could make mice melt . . . Well, maybe there were some diseases out there that could do that. He'd have to investigate and research some things when he got home.
Shanuh clapped lightly, beaming as Iamel caused the rodent harm. The beast was almost dead, and probably wouldn't make it through the night. The life of the rodent had been damaged significantly, but what Iamel did with it was up to Iamel. "Very nicely done," Shanuh encouraged, eyes bright with joy.
"I know you seem to have emotional limitations with your magic," he glanced around at the class, addressing all of them, "Some of you may find such limitations. It may be frustrating, but you'll learn what you can and can't do. You'll all learn, with time, how to over come such barriers or, at the very least, learn to cope with them."
Three down, two to go! The raven and the snowy owl, disease and hypothermia.
"Now, Xaxis, when you're ready. . . " Shanuh hardly noticed the scent of burning flesh. What he smelled was something much more beautiful, something much more potent - the scent of death. It was lingering in the air, drifting around the room, waiting. Neither Iamel nor Savius' mouse were completely dead. . .
Not yet, at least.

"What the CRAP?" Diacyn jumped a bit as the mouse squeaked, squealed, and finally burst into tiny puffs of flame and burning flesh. "You can do THAT? That's AWESOME!"
There was no question in his mind anymore. Screw Savius and his self-mutilating mouse: Iamel was the coolest of all. Diacyn gave him a triumpahant high-five. He hadn't noticed much of the dark, smouldering glow in Iamel's eyes that had gone along with the explosions- he was too high on the scent of death and scorched things.
"...only I don't think it'd be good to eat anymore," he muttered, as he sat back to watch Xaxis do his thing. What was this going to be?

Rascir sat petting the mouse he had since he arrived, having practiced on Savius' mouse. At the same time he witnessed Iamel's cruel display and furrowed his brow, doing his best not to look sad. But the pity was washing over him. Why did death have to come so violently for the mice? Was it because they were simple little animals that couldn't defend themselves? Why couldn't they be practicing on other kinds of living things that didn't scream in pain like plants or something...?
If death was so important, why was anything allowed to live in the first place? This seemed like only half of the process to Rascir and it puzzled him that no one mentioned anything about it. Everyone else seemed to just accept and take delight in it. He looked pensive and was quiet throughout the demonstration and as Xaxis' turn came about.
Thoughts were racing in his head, frothing and crashing in like the tides of the sea against the rocky shore of his mind. Involuntarily he was fanning his wings as he thought, his colors glistening brilliantly. Things inside were forcing him to mature faster than he wanted to. Had he no control over this at all?

((Ooh . . . a mighty 10. x3 ))
Xaxis was still fascinated that Savius had made his mouse eat itself, and that Iamel had blown his up. Now it was his turn to be able to show off his fantastic magic skills. "Can I go now?" He questioned, glancing form Shanuh to his peers.
If Iamel wasn't finished or Shanuh had other things to do.
Shanuh smiled and gave a nod. "Go ahead, Xaxis. Let's see what you can do."
The ravan did his best not to squeal in excitement. FINALLY! Pushing himself out of his chair, he moved to the front of the room to scoop out a mouse. The little black and white furred critter squeaked, sniffing at his fingers before beginning its fight against its capturer.
Okay.
Now was his time to shine.
Keeping his grip firm on the mouse, Xaxis shut his eyes, trying to focus. Focus. Forget about Shanuh and Savius, Iamel, Diacyn and Rascir. Forget about all of them. It was just him. . . and the mouse.
Him and the mouse.
Mouse.
What did he want to accomplish? Make it sick.
Make it regurgitate its organs, or . . or . . . Back track. He didn't have to do anything super impressive, but he did want to accomplish something. The raven imagined the creature growing weaker, its bones aching, its stomach turning sour. Make it sick. Make it sick. Make it sick.
He imagined the mouse feeling ill, feeling woosy, feeling wretched. . . Have it feel like he often felt.
The raven, so focused on his task at hand, wanted too much. He was young yet, and manipulating bodies never seemed to come easy for the raven. Powerful he was, of course! But he'd have to work double for that power.
The mouse fought Xaxis, despite a sudden feeling of exhaustion.
Xaxis, who felt a strange sensation run through him, a drain of his own power, opened one violet eye to look down at the mouse.
A sneeze.
And it was done.
The energy the raven had stored up had been released upon its victem, and the little mouse had given a wet sneeze. But that was it.
No comatose state.
No vomit.
No shakes and fever.
A sneeze.
The raven felt his cheeks flush and his mouth turn to cotton - after Savius made his mouse EAT itself, after Rascir made one pass out, after Iamel blew his up . . . all he got was one lousy sneeze!?!?!?!
Xaxis was now humiliated in front of all of his friends! He couldn't do anything but get the rodent to sneeze - WHY THE HELL NOT!? The raven was absolutely, positively appalled by the weak magical reaction. The desire to have wanted to do well (especially in front of his friends) and the now obvious FAILURE came crashing down on the bird.
Wings drooping, Xaxis' disappointment was obvious.
". . . ." He licked his lips, not sure what to say. " . . .guess that's it." A little forced smile, and a little squeeze on the rat.
It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair. Why couldn't he do cool things like his friends? Why couldn't he do something awesome too?? Glancing over at Diacyn, the raven (who was now three shades paler with pink ears and cheeks) gave an encouraging laugh. "Your turn, Diacyn." Yeah - that was right. . .
Part of Xaxis hoped and prayed that Diacyn would fail too. Then at least he wouldn't be alone.

Iamel leaned over, offering the burnt little mouse to Rascir. "Wanna try to put this to sleep too?" He whispered softly, "If you don' wanna, I can do something but I figured..."
The woodpecker shrugged, glancing back to Diacyn with a grin. He was right. It WAS too burnt to eat and...well, the little thing was still concious. Barely, but it was. And that was sad.
Then Xaxis hpped up to play. Red eyes narrowed in on his friend, watching the Raven with a curious quiver of his wings. What would he do? Maybe it would get the BLACK DEATH.
OOOOOH.
His eyes widened, leaning closer and closer, his own burnt mouse forgotten when --
a'choo
Eyebrows quirked a little, eyes going back up to Xaxis. Well s**t.
"Y'know, colds are deadly if you don't take care of them." He butted in. People used to die of colds all the time! That was right!

"Wanna try to put this to sleep too? If you don' wanna, I can do something but I figured..."
"Like what? Make it explode again?" Rascir wrinkled his nose as he whispered back. "I don't think I like the smell much."
He stuck his own mouse on his head and thought. The little spotted thing did dizzy, lost little circles as it clung to his hair and he thought. He looked at the devastated look on Xaxis' face.
"You should try again," he suggested. "Maybe you were thinking about it wrong?"

((OK - you conned him into giving it one more go. xD And with a plus one, he killed it. Wow - I'm shocked - usually dice hate me!))
Shanuh's heart broke when he saw the raven's disappointment. The poor thing - the sneeze had been something, but Shanuh knew that Xaxis had hoped for something . . .bigger.
"Rascir's right - why not try once more." Shanuh encouraged gently, watching the raven flop uncerimoniously in his chair.
Magic wouldn't come easy for all of them (not at this stage) but with time and practice. Sometimes desired effects wouldn't happen. Their abilities (especially at such a beginners level) was not guaranteed. Perhaps he'd talk to the children about it afterwards.
Xaxis felt his throat constrict at Iamel's words. Looking up, his expression was glum, and he almost scowled at the woodpecker. Yeah - point it out to everyone that the sneeze sucked. As if the entire room didn't already know that eliciting a sneeze was pathetic, he just had to announce that people USED to die from colds.
USED to.
Even Xaxis understood that to die from a cold was one humiliating way to die.
At Rascir's encouragement, followed by Shanuh's words, the raven heaved a heavy sigh. Why should he even bother to try again? Just to be humiliated again by his weak magic??
Still, the sulking boy didn't want to look like he couldn't handle another shot at the mouse.
A quick glance at Diaycn, hoping the owl wouldn't mind. "Fine. I'll . . try it again," he grumbled, violet eyes turning to look down at the mouse.
Stupid thing.
Xaxis didn't like the mouse anymore than the squirming ball of fur liked him.
All right . . . one more time. Closing his eyes (it just felt better that way) Xaxis didn't try to force the magic. Too afraid to really "get into" it, he remembered what Savius' advice had been - the quiet parts of him.
Relaxing a bit, Xaxis tried not to think of what would happen to the rat. He just . . he just wanted something to happen. Illness. Disease. Virus. Bacteria.
Again, the energy built and for the longest moment, nothing happened.
The rat, quivering and squeaking in Xaxis' grasp, managed to crawl out and onto the boys arm.
Xaxis didn't notice.
Searching for an escape route, the little ball of fuzz seemed perfectly fine. Squeak, squeak, pause to wash whiskers, squeak, squeak -
cough.
It happened quickly and suddenly. Xaxis had opened his eyes, certain of his own failure, and stared dismally down at the rodent. The look behind his purple gaze wasn't typical shy Xaxis. Instead, the look was something deeper, something focused, something dangerous.
The mouse seemed frightened. Another cough and the mouse started shaking. Quivering, the little creature fell off of the raven's lap, falling on the floor, unable to pick itself up. The cough turned into a heavy wheezing, a gasping, and little pink paws clawed madly at the carpet.
The panicked squeaking became muted with congestion.
Slowly, ever so slowly, the little mouse started to suffocate upon its own phlegm. The harmless sneeze Xaxis had given it earlier now seemed to blossom into a thirty second dose of pneumonia.
Within seconds, and the mouses breathing turned more and more shallow. Its body was lurching over the floor as it faught for breath, but its lungs had quickly filled with thick mucous.
There would be no saving it now.
In its death throes, the creature stopped breathing completely. Muscles twitching, it lay on the floor, body stiffening as death quickly claimed the creature.
Xaxis was mildly surprised.
He felt . . . exhausted, but realization of what he'd just done started to slowly sink in.
Shaking his head, as if out of a reverie, the raven leaned over to stare at the rodent. A toe reached out to poke at it. Was it sleeping or was it . . . was it . . .
"I killed it." His voice was soft, almost a whisper. Looking up (just for confirmation - maybe he was seeing things) the raven wasn't sure how to respond.
((Ah-ha. He's confused - from one extreme to the other. ))

Shanuh was all but beaming as Xaxis managed to kill the mouse. "Very good, Xaxis - this is a good lesson for all of you," he explained, reaching down to pick up the mouses corpse. Glancing from one child to the next, his violet lips twisted into a smile.
"It's not always going to work 100% of the time. There will be times when your magic will backfire, there will be times when your magic won't give you the desired effects. At this stage in life, at this age, manipulating death is a very difficult process.
"It's going to take time and patience and a lot of work before you will begin to master your abilities. So don't get frustrated when things don't work!"
Handing the dead rodent over to Xaxis (whos still looked shocked at his ability to kill something), Shanuh grinned. "I bet that felt nice, didn't it?"
There was something about actually taking a life that was . . .refreshing. Hurting it or bringng it steps closer to the end was satisfactory - but there was a different feeling involved when a soul was snatched.
The children might not have a chance to truly feel it at such a young age, but Shanuh knew it was there. Somewhere.
Slowly but surely, they would waken up to see who and what they truly were. Some would embrace their path, while others may reject it. It would be most interesting to see what the future would hold.
Xaxis dumbly took the mouse, looking down at its still body. The eyes had glazed over, and there was some cold mucous (or perhaps just thick saliva?) stuck to the mouses nose and mouth.
Eyes narrowing, a delighted smile replaced the raven's confusion. Looking up at Shanuh, he nodded fervantly. "It felt . . .it felt . . ." What did it feel like?
"It just felt right."
The raven wanted to repeat the performance, to kill again, to try again but . . .his turn was up. He couldn't wait to tell Lucien of his accomplishments!
Shanuh turned his eyes on the owl, quirking an inquisitive brow. "Well then, Diacyn - show us what you got!" The owl was the last to complete his performance.

Rascir's eyes went from smiling at Xaxis to looking warily at Diacyn as Shanuh spoke. He thought about what he'd tell Jenys...
Hey, Jen, we spent today killing pet mice.
No, that didn't sound right. He shook his head and thought some more.
Hey, Jen, you know why I look so strange? It's because I'm not just a little boy who sprang from a bird. I kill things!
Somehow nothing was going to be fitting as an explanation. He sighed and let the mouse crawl down onto his shoulders. All he knew now was a door within him sprang open and now he could never close it. Something within him matured, whether he wanted it to or not, and now he had to deal with it.
"Does this change who I am?" he asked innocently at Shanuh.
