"...the hell? Hey! Who are you?"
"You don't work here, do you? What are you doing in this area?"
Immediately on the alert, the guards took in the young woman's casual clothes and her apparent surprise at seeing them on the other side of the door. She had to be one of the guests, didn't she? She looked like one...though she was carrying a card...

Curses were all that raced through Samantha's mind for a moment. Her mind refused to cooperate with her wishes to come up with a useful plan or bluff, so instead, she forced it. Sneering back at the pair of guards, she fell back on the old standard. When in doubt, turn the tables and bluff like hell.
"Of course I work here, you idiots! Would I have security clearance if I didn't?" She snarled, waving the card in their faces for only a second. Long enough for them to see it was legit...not long enough for them to notice that the name on the card couldn't possibly belong to a female. Thank heavens that the cards were only for electronic use and didn't have photo IDs.
"I work directly with Dr. Hakan. I assume that you two can't say the same?" She raised an eyebrow, arms crossed defiantly over her chest as she prayed that his name carried as much weight around here as she guessed. "I have no need to share the details of my business with you guards, but if you insist, then I suppose that you won't mind paying the price with Dr. Hakan when I'm late."

The guards exchanged nervous looks, hesitating before moving their hands slowly away from their weapons. The higher-ups were allowed to wear whatever they wanted, unlike the guards. And if she was legit, they certainly didn't want Dr. Hakan's wrath on their heads. Best to play it safe, they seemed to agree with their eyes only.
"I'm so sorry, Miss. We've had some issues with some of the guests lately. Breaking loose, stealing keys, attacking guards, breaking into records rooms... I suppose we're all a bit on edge. Please, be on your way. And if it's not too much trouble...could we pretend this never happened?"
The man's nerves were frayed...the lab wasn't known for being particularly forgiving. Especially when Dr. Hakan was concerned. It was more likely that she'd turn him in for her own amusement rather than keep quiet, if she were anything like the man she worked for.

Samantha gave the man a half-smile, only partially guessing what was going on in his head, and secretly quite relieved herself. "Not a problem. I haven't lost that much time. In fact, if you can tell me if you know of any shortcuts from here to the lab that will save me some time, I can promise this exchange will stay between the three of us. I need to talk to Dr. Hakan as soon as possible."
Practically holding her breath in suspense, she waited to see if her ruse would work. If so, she'd not only escape this little incident unscathed, but she'd be back on track! Perfect!

The first guard seemed about ready to collapse in relief, and the second was all too happy to jump in with his assistance. "Oh, sure! We know these halls like the backs of our hands! Nothing else to do on patrol afterall," he admitted with a sheepish grin. "Just continue down this hallway behind us, same way you were going, then take the second right. About halfway down that hall, you'll find a corridor to your left. Take that. It'll take you straight back to the research lab wing. Simple as that." He nodded to accentuate this fact, trying and failing to hide his own obvious relief that she wasn't going to turn them in.
They both knew the rumors of what happened in that lab. And the Dr. wasn't above doing the same to those who failed at their assigned jobs...

"Wonderful. You two keep up the good work then." Samantha gave the pair a smile and a playful wink as she slipped past them and into the hallway beyond, quickly leaving the shaking guards behind with her brisk, confident step. As soon as she took the turn the second guard had indicated, she made it about ten steps before making sure the coast was clear and nearly collapsing against the wall. Bracing herself with one hand, she took a moment to try and calm her racing heart as she pondered what she'd just learned. Apparently, her uncle carried more weight around here than even she'd suspected! Well, his name did at least...and some measure of fear. She'd seen it quite clearly in the guards' eyes as soon as her uncle's name had left her lips, enclosed in a threat. What was her uncle really doing here? He was up to something and Samantha was determined to find out what. Normally, she wouldn't have cared one way or the other, but in this case, she could be involved personally. There was no way she could overlook what he might be doing here. Not now that she was involved.
New determination and purpose in her step, she set out again for the lab.

"I SAID NO INTERRUPTIONS!" Dr. Carl Hakan shouted, almost snarling at the closed door. Putting down the papers he was sifting through, he rubbed tiredly at his temples. It was so hard to find good help...they never lasted long...
"Err, I'm sorry, sir. Really, I am," came the nervous reply from the other side of the door. "But, we have a bit of a problem out here..."
Carl's eye twitched. "WHAT KIND OF PROBLEM? Don't tell me the damn Gyarados is acting up again! I told you, if he acts up, just increase his tranquilizer dosage!" Fools. Couldn't even follow simple orders.
"No, sir, not the Gyarados. Not that sort of problem...something else..."

"Damn straight we have a problem!" shouted a familiar female voice. Samantha sneered and shook off the restraining hand of a guard on her arm. Her eyes seemed to radiate threats of death and/or mangling if he so much as touched her again and apparently the guard was smart enough to understand. He continued to keep a watchful eye on her instead, though he kept his distance. Something about this one unnerved him. She was definitely related to the doc...
"Dear uncle! We need to have a little family, heart-to-heart chat!" Samantha called through the door in a sing-song manner, her voice sickeningly sweet and yet failing to cover the venom beneath. "RIGHT NOW!" Her abrupt change in tone was punctuated by a loud bang as her fist connected with the door. Even the guard jumped.
She grinned victoriously as the door clicked and inched open.

Carl Hakan's snarling face appeared in the gap between door and frame, eyes quickly taking in the sight of his neice and the situation at a glance. "Fine, if the alternative is you breaking my door down, then get in here. And close the door behind you. The rest of you? BACK TO WORK!"
The sight of the assistant and guard scrambling madly away from the door brought a grin to the doctor's face that no other would see as he crossed back to his small desk. This was merely his private space connected to the lab. His main office was elsewhere, away from the hustle of the lab and much more comfortably furnished. Here, he had a desk, a computer, and a couple chairs. Just the basics.
Quietly, his mind was racing. How the hell had his niece gotten in here? She shouldn't have been able to get out of the dormitory wing on her own, let alone get this close to him without getting caught again! The guards and staff were under explicit instructions to keep the 'guests' under close observation and that they were to be allowed no contact with him, not even by intercom or phone, for ANY reason whatsoever. Someone would pay dearly for this mistake...
But for now...what did she want? She couldn't possibly know yet...
His mind still racing, he took a seat behind his desk and kept his calm, outward composure. "Now, what could I possibly help you with, my dear? The staff has been taking good care of you, I trust? Getting you anything you need? That is what they're paid for, afterall."

Samantha smirked at the retreating staff as well, finding her own satisfaction in their mad scramble. She'd done it! She wasn't entirely sure how, but she'd done it! Victory!
Striding confidently into her uncle's office, she closed the door loudly behind herself and pulled the remaining chair out before sinking into it and leaning forward. There would be no pleasantries and nonsense here today. She was here to talk business.
"Oh yes, everything I need," Samantha replied with a smile that quickly shifted into a smirk. "Except one thing. A ticket home. Think you can arrange that one, Unc? Doesn't seem like anyone else is willing to."
Without giving him a chance to answer, she waved her hand and launched into her next grievance. "Before you start making my travel reservations though, we need to talk about something else no one seems willing to discuss." Her eyes were narrow and set with determination when she turned back to her relative. "My surgery. No one will give me any details. You can't claim patient-physician confidentiality either when it's the patient asking, so don't even think about giving me that crap. I've heard enough of it. I want to know exactly what you did to me. Now."
Her voice was quiet now, but with just enough emotional instability behind it to give it some waiver. She was struggling to keep herself calm as she waited in suspense for her uncle's answer. Weeks of waiting, wondering, and fretting...and it all came down to his answer now.

Outwardly, Dr. Carl Hakan was the perfect picture of collected composure. Inside...his mind raced furiously. This was exactly what he'd feared she would ask...and yet, he was no fool either. He'd known from the moment he heard her voice outside his office door just what she wanted. He had simply pushed his concerns aside for too long and now he wasn't completely prepared. Well, he'd have to give her what she wanted...even if it was an incomplete answer. Anything to make sure she was placated...or at least distracted enough for him to call the guards to haul her away again.
She may be his niece by blood, but they held no further tie that would make him feel any better about being alone with her. Not after what he'd done...
"Samantha...my dear," he started slowly, putting on his best 'concerned family member' frown. Now was the time for deceit. The ultimate test.
"As you may remember, I told you that the surgery would have to be very drastic. A number of your body's systems had already failed and the rest were soon to follow. As it was, your chance of survival was minimal...it's a miracle that you survived at all." He reached across the desk, placing his hand over his niece's. Sorrow. Concern. Worry.
All the emotions a distraught family member should express in a situation such as this.
"There was no way we could find donor organs in time. We had to act immediately, so we acted on some of our recent research and worked with what we had. We found a donor in time, fortunately," he explained reluctantly, sorrow in his voice. Or seemingly so.
"I'm afraid...the donor wasn't exactly human..."

Carl Hakan may have been the outcast of the family, but his niece knew him well enough to know when he was lying through his teeth. His supposed pity and concern was worth as much to Samantha as a pair of boxing gloves to an Espeon. She wasn't stupid by any means and refused to even pretend to be fooled by this act.
Then...he dropped the bomb.
"W-what...? What are you saying?!?" Her heart both stopped and plummeted to her feet at his admission. 'Not...human? Then, what...no...it couldn't be...could it? It's not scientifically possible!' She violently jerked her hands away from his reach, clutching the arms of the chair tightly enough to whiten her knuckles. If her heart had stopped before, now it had revived itself and was pounding at twice the normal speed. She could feel her pulse pumping through her veins, chest tightening with barely-contained panic. It was too much to consider...he was lying...he had to be...there was no way...even he couldn't have...
She shook her head, clutching it tightly with both hands. "Carl..." Her voice was soft and slowly she raised her eyes to stare deeply into his. "This is some sort of joke, right? All just a big joke and the punchline is coming soon. Tell me you're not serious..."
Withdrawn into already-uncontrollable disbelief and shock, she only stared at this man who was supposed to be her blood relation. What did blood really mean anyway? She was really starting to question that...
"Uncle Carl..." she whispered, sounding more like a frightened little girl than a supposably-intimidating young woman. "Please...tell me. What did you do to me?"

Carl sighed, seemingly upset and distraught as well at what he was being forced to tell her. He shook his head, unsure what to do with his hands now that he couldn't reach for hers to offer reassurance. "Sam, please...it was your last chance. We did the only thing we could. We couldn't even be sure it would work at all...but it did! Isn't that what's important? That you're alive and healthy? Wasn't that the point?"
One hand still lying on the desk uselessly, Dr. Hakan's other hand slid slowly along the bottom of his desk before finding and depressing a tiny button. Only a minute longer...
"This is a major breakthrough for medical research, Sam. Just think of the possibilities...think of all the poor people on organ donor lists around the world that we could save with this technology that would otherwise be lost. And you're the first...our first success. Imagine it..."
'The first success...the first perfect hybrid between human and Pokemon... And different from all the rest...though there are sure to be more to come. Of course, there's the risk of the body rejecting the foreign organs...though that's easily taken care of with a simple, little injection... No more worries after that...just the perfect hybrid remains.'
As he thought this, three guards slipped into the room and surrounded the young woman in her chair. Dr. Hakan's relief was almost tangible.
"Now, come, my dear, and try not to worry about these things any longer. You need your rest now. We'll talk more later when you're feeling better..."
He stood and circled around the desk to her side. Bending over, he kissed her cheek and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear with a smile. The very picture of a concerned, doting family member.
Too bad it all felt so very wrong.

Samantha was...well, she was far beyond shock at this point. She'd convinced herself that her uncle was going to laugh in a moment and tell her that the whole thing had been a big joke. That never happened. She knew now that it never would. She could hear it in his voice. For once, he was telling her the truth. Sinking weakly into her chair, she stared off into space as she weakly replied, "Don't call me, 'Sam'..." It didn't carry nearly the weight or sharpness that she wished it did.
In fact, she only shivered at his signs of 'affection.' It may have looked like affection to anyone else watching from afar, but Samantha knew better than to believe that lie. It was merely one of many. A lie and a ruse; put on display for other people to witness. In reality, it was cold, calculated...wrong. Normally...she'd have probably hit him for pulling something like that.
She couldn't even find the energy to resist as the three guards took her by the arms and hauled her bodily from the chair. Her eyes stared blankly, her form limp as if in defeat. There was no trace of the usual fiery spark in her eyes right now. Where it had gone was anyone's guess. They began hauling her towards the door and settled for half-dragging her if she didn't pick up her feet. She didn't bother to glance back at her uncle as they 'escorted' her out of the office and presumably back to her room. His words still hung in her mind...
...organ transplant...
...not exactly human...
...major breakthrough for medical research...
All well and good...but where did she fit in the overall equation? She was still too off-balance from this unexpected turn of events to even remember half of the questions she should have asked. She'd come up with plenty more in the next few days...questions that she could never hope to answer herself, or even hope to have them answered directly.
So many things to think about and process...
For now, she couldn't even consider the possibility of coping with this new discovery.
Not just yet.

The door closed behind the exiting group and Dr. Hakan collapsed into his desk chair in relief. That was a close one. Fortunately, she'd reacted exactly as he'd anticipated: shock, disbelief, then silence. He wasn't sure how long that would last, but at least it had been long enough to apprehend her. She'd be safely back in her room and restricted to the dormitory wing soon, he assured himself.
Damn it all, there had been far too many lapses in security lately. This was not acceptable! Changes must be made. No more subjects escaping to wander about on a whim, breaking into classified rooms of files...tracking him down to his own lab. This sort of lax security just wouldn't cut it anymore. It was bad enough now, but soon things would be getting more dangerous and he couldn't afford any slip-ups. He was running a tight ship around here, or meant to...
Security must be tightened immediately...especially around his own person. He couldn't have any of the experiments seeing him in person from now on. Lugia knew what might happen after they discovered the truth about what was going on. He picked up the phone, dialing the head of security. Any orders would trickle down the ladder from there, so Carl could be sure that everything would be taken care of. Afterall, it was well-known what happened to failures around here.
Which reminded the doctor...he needed to find out just where Samantha had gotten that security card he'd seen dangling around her neck.
Someone would pay for that mistake...dearly.
